Tuna long lines fisheries have more contributed on the catch of shark (Requiem shark sp.) in the Indian Ocean. Most of catch from tuna long lines landed at two main landing sites of tuna long line which operated in the Indian Ocean were Pelabuhan Ratu and Cilacap. This study was conducted at that two landing sites during 2004. The result showed that shark (Requiemshark sp.) catch composition on tuna long line was dominated by blue shark, Prionace glauca (40 to 90%), while other sharks i.e. silky shark (Carcharhinus falciformis), spot tail shark (Carcharhinus sorrah), big eye thresher (Alopias superciliosus), pelagic thresher (Alopias pelagicus), and mako shark (Isurus sp.) between 3 to 30% from the total catch of shark (Requiem shark sp.). Percentage catch of sharks (Requiem shark sp.) againts total catch of tuna surface long line during 2004 was ranging 5 to 25% from everage of 85 unit of tuna long line boat that operated in the Indian Ocean. Catch fluctuation related with the weather conditon when the fishers are fishing activity at sea. The high catch of shark (Requiem shark sp.) was occur on July until August.

There are two essential landing sites for handline tuna in Indonesia: Palabuhanratu (in the Indian Ocean) and Kendari (in the Banda Sea). This paper analyzes handline catches from the Indian Ocean and Banda Sea waters as the main fishing ground. The catch composition of the handline tuna landed in Kendari is more varied than Palabuhanratu. Several species commonly caught are yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis), bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) as a target species, and some billfish species as bycatch. Mean CPUE for handline tuna landed in Palabuhanratu is lower than Kendari. A significant difference is based on the monthly mean CPUE variation between Palabuhanratu and Kendari landing sites (p < 0.001). Handline catches in Palabuhanratu had a more comprehensive range of length sizes than Kendari, using a two-sample K-S test showed significant differences (p < 0.001). The fish size landed in Kendari is relatively smaller than Palabuhanratu. The average length of fish caught by handline is smaller than the length at first maturity (Lm) value in both landing sites. The use of large size hook for hand lines is recommended for catching tunas in this area.

Protein from fish is essential for feeding the world’s population and is increasingly recognized as critical for food security. To ensure that fisheries resources can be sustainably maintained, fisheries management must be appropriately implemented. When logbook and landing records data are not complete or are incorrect, it is challenging to have an accurate understanding of catch volume. Focusing on Indonesian longline vessels operating in the Indian Ocean from 2012–2019 (n = 1124 vessels), our aims were to (1) assess compliance through identification of landing sites and potentially illicit behavior inferred by interruptions in VMS transmission, and (2) understand how the fishery operates along with quantifying the spatio-temporal distribution of fishing intensity by applying a Hidden Markov Model, which automatically classified each VMS position as fishing, steaming and anchoring. We found vessel compliance gaps in 90% of vessels in the dataset. Compliance was questionable due both to the widespread occurrence of long intermissions in relaying VMS positions (mean = 17.8 h, n = 973 vessels) and the use of unauthorized landing sites. We also observed substantial changes in fishing effort locations among years. The introduction of regulatory measures during the study period banning transshipment and foreign vessels may be responsible for the spatial shift in fishing activity we observed, from encompassing nearly the whole Indian Ocean to more recent intense efforts off western Sumatra and northern Australia.

Silky shark (C. falciformis) is one of the family Carcharhinidae community caught by shark longlin from, drift tuna long line and drift gill net in the Indian Ocean. This study was conducted between April 2001 to December 2004 at some fish landing sites an or fish market i.e. Palabuhanratu, Cilacap, Kedonganan-Bali, and Tanjung Luar Lombok. Results showed relationship between total length and clasper length was exponential (R2=0.8218), for not calcification clasper, and (R2=0.8197) for not full calcification clasper, and linier (R2=0.7529) for full calcification claspe . The correlation of clasper length and total length of silky shark tend to be smaller with in creasing calcificated content and clasper. The lowest length frequency of female silky shark was 51 to 60 cm and 241 to 250 cm, and the highest length frequency was 181 to 190 cm. Lowest length frequency of male silky shark was 251 to 260 cm and the highest was 181 to 190 cm. While sex ratio of male and female was mostly 1:1 (51: 49%). Variation of sex ratio occured due to the availability of fish and the selectivity of the fishing gear.

Silky shark (Carcharhinus falciformis) is one of the family Carcharhinidae that commonly caught in the Indian Ocean South of Java. The purpose of this study was to obtain information on the populations parameters of silky shark caught in the waters of Indian Ocean Southern part of Nusa Tenggara. The study was conducted at fish landing sites in Tanjungluar, East Lombok from January to December 2016. The method used in this research was survey method. Observations included total body length, sex ratio and clasper length measured with direct measurements and visual observations in the field. From a total 3002 fish samples showed that the total length range for silky shark (Carcharhinus falciformis) caught in the waters of the Indian Ocean landed in Tanjungluar were between 65-300 cm TL (female) and 74-315 cmTL (male), with the average length of 187, 66 cmTL (female) and 195 cm TL (male). The estimated Von Bertalanffy growth parameters of length infinity (L), growth rate (K) and theoretical age of fish at zero length (t0) were 331.28 cmTL, 0.42 / year and -0.20 years, respectively. The Von Bertalanffy growth equation for silky shark was Lt = 331.28 [1-e-0.42(t+0.20)]. The calculated Parameters for silky shark mortality including total mortality rate (Z), the natural mortality rate (M) and the fishing mortality rate (F) were 2.79 / year, 0:49 / year and 2.30 / year, respectively. The exploitation rate (E) of silky shark of 0.82 indicates the exploitation of this species has already high.

Carcharhinus falciformis is an abundant oceanic species, which occurs in equatorial and tropical zones, with an important catch in the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of Mexico. Samples were taken from December 2000 to December 2007 in four landing sites of the artisanal fleet on the coast of Oaxaca. During the period of study 1236 specimens (602 females and 634 males) of C. falciformis were registered. Total length (TL) ranged from 49 to 217 cm for females (mean = 111.3 cm) and from 59 to 265 cm for males (mean = 111.7 cm). The sex ratio of females to males was 1:1 ( 2 0.05 = 0.78, P > 0.05). The present data suggest a size at first sexual maturity of about 184.8 cm TL for females and 178.5 cm TL for males. The catches were composed mainly of young. In the 52 gravid females examined, the average number of embryos per female was seven; with a range of 3-14 embryos. Mean TL of embryos ranged from 10 to 66 cm with evidence of seasonal changes in the size structure. Results obtained showed that C. falciformis gives birth most of the year, with the highest proportion of births during the rainy season (May to October).
