The purpose of this study is to critically analyze the discourse of the de facto inaugural speech presented by president Rouhani while receiving his presidential percept from the leader, to seek the ideology beyond his speech and to detect the point that to which of discourses, reformists’ or principalists’, Rouhani’s discourse belong to. Based on Dijk’s socio-cognitive model of critical discourse analysis the selected corpus’ ideological and persuasive components are assessed. To this end and based on the model, the historical, political or social background of the election is discussed firstly. Then, the political groups and parties, specifically reformists and principalists, their ideologies and power relations are elaborated. Finally, based on the examination of all formal structure, lexical choice and syntactic structure, the presupposed and the implied notions are made explicit, to determine the ideology beyond the formal text. Comparing the extracted notions from the speech with the polarized viewpoints of two political parties, it was concluded that Rouhani tried to keep the golden middle path while presenting his ideas, trying to introduce himself a moderate person and base all his plans on moderation. His speech revealed the strategies to move in a gyre of ideas trying to avoid condemning any party or person of eminence in line to keep all parties in one line to make his move.

Following the discourse-historical approach to Critical Discourse Analysis (Wodak, de Cilia, Reisigl and Liebhart 1999; Wodak 2001), we analyze the inaugural speech of the actual president of Colombia, Álvaro Uribe Vélez, which he delivered on August 7th, 2002 in Bogotá. We take this speech as an illustration for the construction of national identity by the Colombian elites. In our analysis, we are particularly interested in Uribe’s strategy of referring to the European heritage and in his ways of appeasing the cultural and ethnic differences of the population.

This paper looked into the persuasive strategies of President Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III’s public speaking and the hidden ideology that was present in his inaugural speech. Norman Fairclough’s (1995) assumptions in critical discourse analysis that ideologies can be found in texts, that such ideologies can be impossibly separated from texts and that “texts are open to diverse interpretations” was the basis of the study. President Aquino’s persuasive strategies were shown through the evaluation of the ideological and persuasive components of his inaugural speech.

Political discourse is a recent but increasingly exciting field of study. The political discourse offers much scope for interdisciplinary research. This current study is a stylistic analysis of the Inaugural speech delivered by Nigerian President Muhammadu Bukhari in Abuja on 29th May 2015. The current study aims to signify the role of Stylistics in CDA to unleash socio-political cognition in speeches. This qualitative research owing to its interdisciplinary nature draws on stylistics and critical discourse analysis as well. Teun A. Van Dijk's socio-cognitive approach is used to analyze the mental models underlying linguistic structures made explicit through stylistic analysis. The stylistic analysis is conducted on lexical and grammatical levels, but cohesion and speech acts have also been highlighted in the findings and discussion part. The study explores how stylistic devices are used to create a rhetorical effect and how this effect qualifies for being persuasive. The stylistic analysis reconnoiters the linguistic patterns, and CDA leads to the ideologies that shape these patterns. This study strengthens the belief that both stylistics and critical discourse analysis have great scope and power in revealing discursive practices of hegemony and persuasion.

As an interdicipline that studies the relation of language, power and ideology, critical discourse analysis has attracted more and more linguists’ attention, which can be applied to analyze language features under certain social and cultural background. Critical discourse analysis is based on Halliday’s systemic functional grammar that is a practical method to analyze discourse. Political discourse as a kind of typical discourse which involves the speaker’s ideology and intention, can also be analyzed by critical discourse analysis. Therefore, this paper analyzes Donald Trump’s inaugural speech mainly from the perspectives of transitivity, modality, personal pronoun and coherence in order to reveal the speaker’s political intention, and help readers understand the meaning of discourse, cultivate their critical consciousness and analytical ability. The paper concludes that Trump uses different language forms to transmit, change and maintain audiences’ ideology subtly. At the same time, it has a positive effect on the development of the critical discourse analysis.

COVID-19 has been impacted worldwide attention since it is a serious disease. Millions of people are infected and the aspects of the government have been descent. COVID-19 has become a daily topic for Indonesia’s newspapers. Media has an important role in giving information and awareness about this issue. Critical Discourse Analysis performs in portraying this issue by figuring out the representation of COVID-19 in the headlines. The headlines on The Jakarta Post were analyzed by employing Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistic. The data were taken by observing twenty newspaper headlines from The Jakarta Post newspaper on the national column on the first-week edition using purposive sampling. The writer uses purposive sampling because the writer wants to determine the sampling by specifying special characteristics. The newspaper uses a topical theme in all of the headlines, yet the participants of the Theme are different. The participants involved in the headlines were Actor, Verbiage, Sayer, Senser, and Goal as their Themes. In representing the COVID-19, The Jakarta Post newspaper headlines used the Theme to figure out the participant of the headlines. The participant Actor shows the action or the content of the headlines. Participant Verbiage shows the content of the headline. Participant Sayer directly says the content of the headline. Participant Senser shows that people are suffered due to this virus. Participant Goal shows that the action gives a positive impact on something related to the topic. The Jakarta Post newspaper uses these themes in order to examine the representations of COVID-19 in Indonesia that is a dangerous virus. The dangers of COVID-19 can be seen by the use of the participant Actor that is mostly done by the government.
