This paper is firstly a story, told by both my students and myself. It started with my question: can arts other than music be used by Music Therapy students to negotiate uncertainties which arise at the threshold of entering into their new therapist community? A rite of passage from Expressive Arts Therapy in Toronto and Switzerland was transplanted into an Australian Music Therapy course. What emerged was truly magical. The students began by asking themselves defining questions… where am I now?…where do I want to be? They let art-works emerge from their growing edges to provide sometimes surprising answers. They then formed small groups and allowed the art-works to interact to create a Presentation - a ritual day of exchanging art-gifts. Their written reflections help illustrate the story. They describe “openness to possibilities”, “unexpectedness”, “like flying”, “a healing process”, “belonging”, “reverence”. Afterwards, in my own reflections, I attempt to grapple with the significance of such experiences in which we enter, through art-making, into the realm of “poiesis”. Are they vital to counterbalance the evidence-based approaches to knowing? What are the ramifications for an inquiry-based Music Therapy practice which values “not-knowing”? Can we deepen our courage to dwell in the discomfort of not-knowing while knowing finds us?

The author discusses what music therapists must work on to establish Evidence-based practice (EBP) in music therapy by referring to Saito's discussion of the misunderstandings and various interpretations of Evidence-based medicine (EBM), the issue of Empirically Supported Treatments (ESTs) in EBP in psychology (EBPP), and related discussions. Although the EBP movement tends to be recognized as a threat to music therapy, some recent discussions of EBM and EBP are encouraging for the development of EBP in music therapy. This paper shows that an integration of evidence of multiple types with clinical expertise and the individual needs in clients has become a consensus of EBP. However, the issues related to conducting Randomized controlled Trials (RCTs) and employment of standardized treatment protocols in music therapy have persisted as difficult problems. Because the issue of EBP is very complex and easily biased, effective learning of this issue should be promoted among music therapists so that they can successfully relate to the EBP movement and bring benefits to the field of music therapy. The author suggests that incorporating the ideas of EBP positively into the field of music therapy and constructing methodologies and theories will enhance EBP.

This chapter focuses on therapeutic songwriting approaches and techniques for supporting bereaved students. Music therapy-based songwriting offers grieving students a myriad of opportunities to validate, identify, normalize, and express thoughts and emotions, as well as to understand, feel, remember, integrate, and grow. An overview of the “VINE principle” (validation, identification, normalization, and expression of feelings and emotions) is provided as a useful way to support healthy grieving. The Grief Process Scale is an evidence-based measure of five grief process areas (understanding, feeling, remembering, integrating, and growing) and has been used in music therapy to document changes in core behaviors, thoughts and feelings regarding a child’s loved one, and how the child is coping since the death. Recommendations for those leading music interventions are included, as well as song resources and tips for non-music therapists.

The Evidence Based Medicine (EBM)1 framework has been incorporated into the field of healthcare practice over the past decade. Whatever our stance as to its benefits and disadvantages, more and more music therapists in health departments and related clinical posts will be asked to account for their work using this approach to the documentation of clinical effectiveness. It is important that music therapists working within clinical service guidelines understand the framework of EBM and are aware of ways in which they can include its precepts in their justifications for practice and posts. The levels of evidence in an EBM approach are presented and discussed and the issues particular to the application of music therapy research findings are explored. Given the author's experience in paediatric medical settings, some of the examples in this paper will refer to the children's hospital context in particular.

AbstractEarly exposure to age-appropriate, meaningful auditory stimuli, such as lullaby singing, has been shown to advance various medical and developmental goals in premature infants in the NICU while reducing medical costs. A primary goal of NICU music therapists is to control auditory stimuli in the unit to help premature infants reach the greatest possible sedation. In hospitals with limited or no NICU music therapy (NICU-MT) coverage, nurses and other NICU staff can play an important role in providing neuroprotection to these premature infants while also optimizing neurodevelopment via use of recorded music. Based on current literature, this article provides a set of evidence-based guidelines for the use of recorded music with premature infants.

Objective – This paper explores various methods that librarians can use to evaluate and meet the information needs of clinical music therapists (MTs). Methods – A survey of the literature of music therapy (MT) found many empirical studies of MT but none describing how MTs commonly express and satisfy their information needs. As a means of assessing their information needs, we first examine the basic features of MT practice and then compare MTs' information needs with the well-documented needs of nurses. Results – We believe that MTs and nurses exhibit similar basic information needs, such as access to (i) colleagues and experts; (ii) current information in print, electronic, and alternate formats; (iii) reference and ILL assistance from librarians; and (iv) library training to search databases and catalogues. Conclusions – Librarians should collaborate with MTs to identify their specific information needs. To begin, library services can be built by allocating relatively few resources. To evaluate what is required in evidence-based MT, librarians and MT associations should administer a national needs-assessment survey or questionnaire.

Methods and techniques in music therapy are distinct from approaches and models which provide theoretical principles to guide action. Methods and techniques are music-based ways in which the service user or client is engaged musically. The techniques used are based on improvisational, compositional, and music listening opportunities that music therapists engage with clients. Music therapists can use music-based techniques with any combination of acoustic, electric, or electronic instrumentation, and the use of vocalization or singing is also offered. Anyone with musical skills can play music for another person; a person who is tired, in pain, or has a chronic illness or disability. Music therapy is distinguished from other ways of using music to support people in health care by both the training of the clinician, and the use of theoretical thinking to guide the use of techniques and principles in making helpful, effective, and evidence-based responses to needs.

There is an increasing global need for music therapy practice to be evidence-based with more experimental research findings. This is particularly the case as music therapy is introduced as a complementary therapy in many medical settings, with special reference to integrated care. Can music therapy be really evidence-based as is the case in medicine? How practical is it? Can the multidimensional role that a music therapist plays in a therapeutic setting, her skills, the time she spends with the clients and the effects of music, all be compared to a medical approach? Should music therapists collaborate more with health professionals not only in practice, but also in research to make it evidence based? What are the strengths of music therapy in the medical profession? Oncology is a very challenging area in the medical field and likewise music therapy is challenging in an oncology setting. Many music therapists are interested in working in this challenging speciality in research. Here is an interview with a renowned Indian surgical oncologist, Dr. Ravi Kannan. He is keen on music therapy being a part of the integrated team in cancer care in India and emphasises the need for more research to be carried out that is evidence-based.

With foundations in deep ecology and ecopsychology, ecological expressive arts therapy offers individuals and communities support to give voice to disenfranchised concerns about issues such as the environment and reconciliation. Expressive music therapy can reconnect voices to hearts, and hands to drums, and words to the powerfully authentic songs of change. This paper describes the theoretical underpinnings of Ecological Expressive Arts Therapy, within a community arts context. The second section of the paper describes the experiential processes of a workshop presented at the Education and Social Change Conference held at University of Technology Sydney in December 2000.
