Purpose – This paper aims to explore the social impact that two events, the Adelaide Fringe Festival and the Clipsal 500, have on young residents (16-19 years old) of Adelaide. The purpose of this paper is to examine how young people participate in these events and how this affects their sense of involvement in the event and contributes to their identity development. Design/methodology/approach – A mixed methods approach was adopted in which focus groups and questionnaires were conducted with secondary school students. As an exploratory study, focus groups (n=24) were conducted in the first stage of the research. The results of the focus groups were used to develop a questionnaire that resulted in 226 useable responses. The final stage of the research explored one event in further depth in order to determine the influence of different participation levels. Findings – This study found that young people demonstrated more involvement in the Adelaide Fringe Festival and their identities were more influenced by this event. Further investigation of the Adelaide Fringe Festival also indicated that level of participation affects the social outcomes gained, with those participating to a greater degree achieving higher involvement and increased identity awareness. This is demonstrated through a model which aims to illustrate how an event impact an individual based on their role during the event. Originality/value – This paper applies two leisure concepts in order to analyse the impact of events. Activity involvement is a concept which examines the importance of the activity in the participant's life. Also of importance to young people is how activities contribute to their identities, especially because they are in a transitional period of their lives.

Abstract:A heritage system is one that has exceeded its lifespan but continues to be used for various reasons, despite the problems it may be causing. Groote Schuur Hospital has a Hospital Information System that is more than 25 years old. The present study reports the result of a survey on users’ attitude and sense of involvement in this system. An attempt is made to determine whether users feel the need for change and whether a sense of involvement is related to this need.

In current research, the regional identity of youth is considered as the most important factor in the preservation and development of the regions’ human capital. Opportunities for the formation of young people’s regional identity based on the adoption of the traditions of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug - Ugra can affect the migration component in the region and will preserve the intellectual, creative and labor potential of the district. The study analyzes and systematizes regional resources that allow the formation of a sense of involvement of the younger generation in the labor activity of fellow countrymen as a heroic deed, regardless of peaceful or military conditions.

ABSTRACTThis article presents an analysis of gender differences in the use of compliments in one genre of written discourse. The data base is a set of 47 peer reviews of academic papers written by graduate students in the form of letters. Drawing on work from several theoretical perspectives, we analyzed the forms, strategies, and discourse functions of compliments in these papers. We found that women made significantly greater use of compliment intensifiers and personal referencing than did men. In using compliments to structure discourse, women more often framed the text with both opening and closing compliments. Consistent patterns suggested that women writers accommodated to the gender of their addressee more than did men, resulting in a discernible female-female complimenting style. The study illustrates specific ways that gender is involved in being polite and in creating and sustaining a sense of involvement in written discourse. (Complimenting, politeness, sociolinguistics, gender, discourse strategies, cross-sex communication, English)

When the Journal asked the fledgling Medical School to explain to the interested observer and the sceptic what the concept of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) meant to those staff members who might have to adapt their teaching methods, Tom Poyser’s name came up. Tom is a final year medical student at Liverpool who took a year out of the course to study International Health at Leeds. The Journal is pleased to publish this personal account of his experiences of the PBL curriculum at Lancaster, where he has been impressed with the personal nature of the teaching and the sense of involvement that students have with the practice of medicine. Minor editorial changes have had to be made to correct Tom’s misunderstanding that Lancaster was a ‘quiet’ medical community before the arrival of the medical school! For those of us who are looking for reassurance that the modern medical curriculum delivers an education comparable with the traditional one, here is a personal view that reflects the experience of a student and his peers.

Anthropologists, administrators and policy makers debated the adivasis question in the post-independent India from the perspectives of isolation, assimilation and integration. Amidst discourses, integration approach was followed to address the adivasi issues in the post-colonial period. Following the integration approach, the Indian state made series of promises to the adivasis in terms of granting equal citizenship rights in social, economic, political and cultural spheres; providing equal opportunities and committed to preserve and protect adivasi culture and identity. Despite such promises, adivasis continue to live at the margin of the post-colonial state, and thereby experiencing different forms of marginalization, dispossession and deprivation. They have developed cynicism towards the integration policy and experiencing declining sense of involvement in the (mainstream) society. The integration approach of the Indian state has become a means of exclusion for the adivasis in India. Within this backdrop, the paper critically examines the contemporary dynamics of integration of adivasis in the Indian state.

A Teaching Fruit-Garden Project was developed as a joint project between two classes in Horticulture and Agricultural Education to develop a teaching resource for college classes, area kindergarten to 12th grade (K–12) schools, and members of the community who were interested in fruit and edible landscaping. Our teaching goal was to develop a sense of involvement in course subject matter among students. The project was based on coordination of team activity, writing across the curriculum, and hands-on learning. Final product in the horticulture course was a proposal consistent with low maintenance; sustainable production principles, including choice of fruit species and cultivars; management plan; and a preliminary site plan. Final products in agriculture education were self-contained teaching modules for K–12 school teachers, including sample lesson plans, projects, and teaching materials. Students liked combining efforts between the two classes. They also liked the idea that their efforts contributed to an on-going service to the community.

This study examined the role of sadness in the process of enjoying tragedy. Sadness, perceived reality, involvement, and enjoyment were measured after participants watched a sad film. The results from structural equation modeling (SEM) analyses indicated that a tragic film induces sadness and that sadness is a positive predictor of perceived reality of the story and sense of involvement. Involvement, in turn, is a positive predictor of enjoyment of the sad film. Sadness predicted subject-oriented enjoyment (measured by a self-referent item: “I enjoyed the movie”) more significantly than object-oriented enjoyment (measured by an object-referent item: “The movie entertained me”). Perceived reality fully mediated object-oriented enjoyment, but only partially mediated subject-oriented enjoyment.

This research explores how esports involvement affects college and career readiness factors of students aged 14-24. These factors include student academic performance, attendance, individual view of future outlook, observation of student learned soft skills as a result of esports, as well as the sense of involvement on campus. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, esports helps build a sense of community, aids in character development, and helps increase participation and engagement for students; furthermore, esports also allows for opportunities to explore STEM-related fields (NFHS Parent's Guide). As this is a major cause for the support of esports in education, the research aims to explore these concepts and its validity through individual students.

Incarceration impacts families by disrupting routine attachment, creating negative consequences for both the parent and child. This article examines the use of an intervention videoing incarcerated parents reading to their children and then delivering those videos to improve child outcomes. Using a mixed-methods approach, a total of 587 surveys were completed by program participants and analyzed for parental perceptions of the program effectiveness. The intervention appeared to increase the frequency of correspondence between the parent and child, improved the sense of parent-child relationship, and increased a sense of involvement, attachment, and connectedness.
