ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze factors associated with nursing students' errors during clinical learning, and their perceptions regarding these events and the opportunity for learning and development provided by them. Method: Convergent Mixed Method design according Creswell and Clark. Qualitative dimension included face to face and internet interviews. Data analysis followed Miles and Huberman method. Results: Nursing student's errors were revealed according to their perceptions. They occurred in all phases of the nursing process and in transversal skills. Errors were acknowledged as learning and developmental opportunities. Final considerations: Students acknowledged their errors and ascribe to themselves reasons and what could have prevented what happened. Mixed Method was a very adequate design to study phenomena. Qualitative dimension was essential to reveal and achieve the objectives. Suggestions founded on the findings are presented.

A ‘mixed-methods’ research design, based upon the categories contained in a disaster response logic model, is suggested as the best approach to capture the complexities of the medical and public health disaster response experience. A mixed-methods design allows the evaluation team to collect and combine data from direct observation, medical records, interviews with victims, health professionals, family and friends of victims, public safety officials, other government and non-governmental officials and from public documents. Validation in a mixed-method design is based upon the concept of triangulation. The term triangulation is used in behavioral research to describe the process of obtaining data from three or more different sources and then comparing the findings to assess consistency across sources. In this design, both qualitative and quantitative data are collected and then merged during the analysis phase. Each data set is used to validate and enhance the other in order to improve the validity of the conclusions reached and the recommendations that follow. However, not all data need be combined. The mixed-method design allows for the analysis of certain types of data separately and then applied to the appropriate research question because there may be no appropriate comparative data.

Five doctoral nursing students and their faculty traveled to St. Kitts and Nevis for a study abroad experience to apply research skills outside of a classroom setting as part of a disaster preparedness elective course. Nursing students reflected on their perspectives of conducting a mixed-methods research study in another country. Each student reported positive benefits from the experience, particularly emphasizing the importance of face-to-face mentorship in doing actual research as a part of doctoral studies to supplement research methods learned in online courses. Students also acknowledged challenges and learning opportunities within their experience. International mentored research projects can assist graduate nursing students through the transition from student to independent researcher. The authors believe these types of intensive research experiences should be encouraged and supported within nursing education.

We conducted a study about three common recruitment and retention obstacles facing scholars interested in racial disparities research: potential mistrust from the black community, a stigmatized research topic, and high participation burden. Nonetheless, we successfully recruited and retained 28 young black men in a three-month study of violence. In this article, we describe and explore the recruitment, engagement, and retention strategies employed during the study. Using a concurrent triangulation mixed-method design, we analyzed data from our web-based administrative system, participant enrollment and exit surveys, and team members’ field notes. A large percentage (79%) of participants completed the study. We received 81% of 556 expected surveys, and 100% of the remaining participants wanted to continue participating at study’s end. We conclude that internal incentives, the combination of informal and formal community recruiters, the visibility of the principal investigator, and face-to-face meetings may have contributed to the success of the project.

Kompetente Pflege und effektives Leadership sind wichtige Voraussetzungen für die Bereitstellung einer qualitativ hochwertigen, evidenzbasierten, patienten- und ergebnisorientierten Patientenversorgung. Die Abteilung Klinische Pflegewissenschaft (KPW) am Universitätsspital Basel (USB) entwickelte und implementierte Programme zur gezielten Praxisentwicklung, welche die pflegerische Kompetenz sowie die des Leadership fördern. Zur Erfassung von Pflege- und Leadership-Kompetenz sowie der Arbeitsumgebungs- und Pflegequalität führte die KPW 2007 eine Evaluationsstudie mit einem Mixed-Method-Design durch. Am quantitativen Anteil der Studie nahmen 679 Pflegefachpersonen und 27 Stationsleitungen teil. Die deskriptiven Resultate zeigen, dass Pflegefachpersonen ihre durchschnittliche pflegerische Kompetenz über alle sieben Subkategorien der Nurse Competence Scale mit einem Mittelwert von 75,1 (VAS 0 – 100) beurteilten. Die Leadership-Kompetenz von Stationsleitungen wurde im oberen Drittel der Skala des Leadership Practice Inventory mit mittleren Werten zwischen 40 bis 50 (Meanscore: 6 – 60) eingeschätzt. Als Qualitätssicherungsmaßnahme sind regelmäßige Nachfolgeerhebungen im Sinne eines Monitoring geplant. Solche Erhebungen werden in Zukunft von zentraler Bedeutung sein, da zu erwarten ist, dass sich mit der Einführung des DRG-Finanzierungsmodells im schweizerischen Gesundheitswesen der Kontext der pflegerischen Leistungen verändern wird.

This study used an explanatory sequential mixed-method design to explore the association between familial interdependence and familial mentoring relationship presence within black families. This study also examined how socioeconomic disadvantage may moderate the association between familial interdependence and familial mentoring presence. A sample of 216 black youth (59% girls; 41% boys) were surveyed, and a subsample of 25 participants were interviewed along with one of their parents, and one nonparental familial adult with whom the youth reported feeling emotionally close to learn more about the enactment of familial interdependence and the formation of familial mentoring relationships across social class. Logistic regression analyses revealed that greater valuing of familial interdependence was associated with a greater likelihood of having a familial mentoring relationship, but this association was present only among nonsocioeconomically disadvantaged youth. Data collected from participant interviews were analyzed to better understand this pattern of findings. These analyses provided some preliminary insights into why familial interdependence may predict familial mentor formation only among nonsocioeconomically disadvantaged youth. Implications of study findings for the promotion of familial mentoring relationships within black families are discussed.

Early career academics are the key agents for the sustainable development of higher education institutions. In China, those who were educated overseas and have returned to Chinese universities to seek academic positions are becoming a fast-growing group. Good research performance is critical to survive in the increasingly competitive environment in academia. Improving research performance requires an understanding of the factors that facilitate or inhibit research performance. In the light of Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, this study, using a mixed-method design (20 interviewees and 136 respondents), elaborates on a number of external factors affecting returned early career academics’ research performance. Understanding these factors is helpful for the building of a favorable environment that can improve the research performance of the returned early career academics, and hence the sustainable development of universities.
