Abstract Introduction: Motor skills are enlarged during schooling age, with possible relation between motor and school performance. Objective: Compare motor skills of children with good and poor school performance, according to the teacher’s perception in the classroom. Method: School children aged 6 to 11 years were divided into two groups; poor school performance (PSP) and good school performance (GSP) and evaluated using the Motor Development Scale (MDS). The chronological age, general motor age and the motor quotient of each area evaluated were compared between the groups using the Mann-Whitney Test. The Chi-square test was used to associate the motor performance classification and the school performance. Results: Chronological age was similar between groups, although the general motor age was smaller in the PSP. The general motor quotient and the motor quotients in the areas of body scheme, spatial and temporal organization were significantly smaller in PSP. Most children were classified by the MDS as Low Normal or Medium Normal motor skills in both groups; however in the GSP, 27.5% of the children had a High Normal or Superior motor development and only 2.5% were classified as Very Inferior or Inferior. In the PSP, 12.5% had a Very Inferior or Inferior performance and only 6.25% had a High Normal or Superior performance (p < 0.05 - chi-square test). Conclusion: Results show a direct connection between poor school performance and motor skill difficulties, which illustrates the relation between motor and cognitive skills.

Introduction: Prematurity and low birth weight are conditions that may compromise the normal development of a child at different stages of development. Considering that these conditions may cause delay in the acquisition of motor skills, it is important to evaluate, detect and prevent possible changes in motor development. Objective: To investigate the influence of prematurity and low birth weight on the motor development of children of three years old relating chronological age to general motor age. Methods: This is an analysis of five cases of preterm children 32.1 (± 1.82) weeks and underweight 1704 (± 384.41) grams, mean chronological age of 43.2 (± 2.59) months, evaluated through the Motor Development Scale (MDS) in the Laboratory of Electromyography and Kinematics (LAELCIN) of the Federal University of Triângulo Mineiro (UFTM), considering general motor age (GMA) and chronological age (CA) as variables. Case: The five preterm and low birth weight children presented a difference between the mean general motor age (37.6 ± 7.40) months and the mean chronological age (43.2 ± 2.59) months, indicating delayed motor development. Conclusion: It was observed the absence of linearity of the variables, indicating delay in the motor development, thus justifying the necessity and importance of the longitudinal monitoring of this population for early detection and intervention.

In this study, we review the relationship between motor development and motor learning, and present a new metaphor that represents the sequence of motor development, which highlights fundamental motor skills as an important phase in the process. As one of the most relevant phases of motor development, several studies that analyzed fundamental motor skills were reviewed in typical developing children as well as in children with disabilities. Most studies revealed motor performance levels below expected since proficiency was not observed. We discuss these results considering fundamental motor skills as essential for the motor development process. Such results raise the awareness of the need to offer children conditions to explore and experience motor activities in order to enhance motor competence.

BACKGROUND: One common observation is that Brazilian children are failing to achieve the expected proficiency, regarding the chronological age, in performing gross motor skills. PURPOSE: The aim was to verify the development of fundamental motor skills of 6- and 9-year-old children from a public school of São Paulo city. METHOD: Eight two children were selected from the first and fourth Elementary year, 40 children from the first grade (6.6 year-old, 20 boys and 20 girls) and 42 children from the fourth grade (9.2 year-old, 21 boys and 21 girls). Children were videotaped performing the Test of Gross Motor Development tasks, locomotor and object-control subtests. Three experimenters inspected the video images and rated the children’s performance following the suggested criteria. RESULTS: Nine-year-old children were advanced in fundamental motor skill performance compared to 6-year-old, but children from both age groups are delayed to the expected fundamental motor skill development. Moreover, the developmental delay is even worse as chronological age increases, with 6-year-old rated as poor whereas 9-year-old children are rated as very poor in fundamental motor skill development. CONCLUSION: These results raise several concerns regarding the importance of mastering the basic motor skills and future enrolment in motor activities.

ABSTRACT The aim of the present study was to investigate the quality of life of children with poor school performance and its association with behavioral aspects and hearing abilities. Methods: This cross-sectional observational study, developed in a town in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, investigated a random sample of public school children, aged 7-12 years old, who performed poorly in school and received specialized educational assistance. The study comprised two stages: 1) collection of data from parents on their children's health, educational, and socioeconomic profile, and from the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire; 2) administration of a quality of life evaluation scale to the schoolchildren. For the assessment of auditory function, transient otoacoustic emissions were used and auditory processing was tested. The following tests were used: verbal sequential memory, nonverbal sequential memory, sound localization, dichotic digits, duration pattern test (flute) and random gap detection. The collected data were analyzed using Excel and STATA 11.0 software. Quality of life was considered the response variable. The explanatory variables were grouped for univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis with the level of significance set at 5%. Results: A statistically significant association was found between impaired quality of life, altered pro-social behavior, and the absence of parental complaints about the children's written language development. Conclusions: Quality of life is impaired in children with poor school performance. The lack of parental complaints about written language and changes in social behavior increased the likelihood of a child having a poor quality of life.

This study describes the development of the Home Environment Resources Scale, a Brazilian measure for families with children ages 6 to 12 years. The scale measures aspects of support for school achievement, made available to the child at home. A first version of the measure with 11 subscales was administered to 100 mothers or guardians of children with poor school achievement in a clinical setting. Analysis of the items in the first version resulted in a final version comprising 8 subscales with acceptable indices of internal consistency. Two validity studies were conducted. One aimed at verifying to what extent the Home Environment Resources Scale could discriminate the home environment of students referred to a mental health clinic on account of poor school performance. The sample included mothers of 53 referred and 23 nonreferred children. The two groups differed significantly in home resources and on four subscales. The other study assessed the validity, i.e., prediction of the academic outcome of children entering Grade 1. 70 children and their mothers participated. Results indicate that school achievement and social competence at school are mediated by family support.

Stunting is very short state of body so that the deficit exceeded -2 SD below the median length or height. Stunting is a public health issue because it deals with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality, delayed motor development, and mental growth retardation. The general objective of research is to know the dominant factor related with stunting in infants (12-59 months) in Sumatra in 2010. This study uses cross sectional research design and quantitative method with 3126 toddlers sample. Processing and analyzing data using chi square test (bivariate) and multiple logistic regression (multivariate). The analysis showed that based on the index TB/U, stunting toddlers as much as 37.5% and 62.5% of normal. The results of chi square test showed significant relationship between stunting with birth weight, energy intake, protein intake, sex, maternal education, area of residence and economic status of families. The results of multivariate analysis showed the birth weight variable is the most dominant factor associated with stunting after being controlled with sex, area of residence and economic status of families variables.
