Abstract In Brazil, Seasonally Dry Tropical Forests (SDTFs) are represented by Caatinga, which exhibits one of the greatest species richness and endemisms among the Neotropical SDTFs. However, studies of the flora of this biome remain deficient, especially in scientifically neglected areas, such as the Seridó region. Located between the states of Rio Grande do Norte (RN) and Paraíba, the Seridó region has an underestimated floristic diversity, especially for non-arboreal components such as climbers. Given this scenario, the study aimed to survey the climbers of the Seridó Ecological Station, a federal conservation unit located in the RN state, as well as to provide a multiple access online identification key. Collections were carried out from 2018 to 2019, as well as consultation of material deposited at the UFRN herbarium. In total, 56 species were listed, being 33 herbaceous and 23 woody climbers, respectively, adding 14 species of climbers to the previous checklist of the unit. Five new occurrences were found for the state of Rio Grande do Norte: Cuscuta globosa, Cuscuta partita (Convolvulaceae), Macroptilium bracteatum (Fabaceae), Heteropterys trichanthera and Tetrapterys longibracteata (Malpighiaceae), being the latest a new occurrence of the genus Tetrapterys for the state. Convolvulaceae is the most representative family (18 spp.), followed by Fabaceae (10 spp.), Apocynaceae (eight spp.) and Cucurbitaceae (five spp.). This is the first study that provides an interactive identification key for the Seridó region and for the RN state. The Bromeliaceae Flora for the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Northeastern Brazil, is presented, based on extensive fieldwork, morphological analyses using herbarium and freshly collected material, and specialized literature. Twenty-six species of bromeliads were recorded in Rio Grande do Norte, distributed in ten genera and in three subfamilies. Bromelioideae was the richest subfamily (eight genera/14 species), followed by Tillandsioideae (one genus/12 species), and Pitcairnioideae (one genus/one species). Aechmea mertensii, Hohenbergia horrida and Tillandsia tenuifolia are new records for Rio Grande do Norte. Eight species (31%) are restricted to the Eastern portion of the state, in the Atlantic Forest. Caatinga dry woodlands harbor 18 species, with remarkable presence of Bromelia laciniosa, Encholirium spectabile, Tillandsia recurvata and T. streptocarpa, the four most widely distributed taxa. We discuss problems related to unclear taxonomic circumscriptions of species or diverging information between authors, more expressively in Hohenbergia, but also in Aechmea, Cryptanthus and Tillandsia. The data presented here might contribute to better understand the morphological variation of these taxa and suggest additional research on their taxonomy. Morphological descriptions, general comments, a map, photo plates and an identification key for all taxa are provided.

The result of an inventory on the lepidopteran fauna associated with the South American Holly (erva-mate) is described. This inventory was based on a bibliographic review, the examination of specimens deposited in scientific collections from the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the systematic collection within commercial erva-mate farms located in Anta Gorda, RS, and on the occasional collections from native trees within the Região dos Vinhedos campus of the Universidade de Caxias do Sul. Every fifteen days between 20 August 2005 and 19 August 2006, 150 trees were visually inspected and all Lepidoptera were collected. A list of 75 lepidopteran taxa belonging to 16 families is presented, including 27 new occurrences for the erva-mate crop, of which 14 species represent new records for the state.

Rio Grande do Sul is the southern state of Brazil and includes 569 taxa of bryophytes, a rich diversity promoted by its geographical position. All recent floristic inventories in the state recorded new occurrences of species, indicating that the diversity of bryophytes may be underestimated. Through floristic inventories carried out between 2016 and 2019, new occurrences of 16 species, included in seven families and 11 genera, were identified. Seven of them are also new records for the Southern Brazil. Bryophyta is represented by five species, four genera and four families, and Marchantiophyta by 11 species, seven genera, and three families.

Abstract: The regional knowledge of species diversity and distribution is important to support conservation strategies for species and their habitats. The main goal of this work is to present a checklist of Odonata species in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, as well as their known locations in the municipalities. The preparation of the list was based in data gathered from collections of Museu de Ciências da Universidade do Vale do Taquari (UNIVATES), Laboratório de Ecologia e Evolução da Universidade do Vale do Taquari (UNIVATES), Museu de Ciências Naturais da Fundação Zoootânica, Museu de Zoologia da Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos (UNISINOS) plus data extracted from 65 publications and the sites SpeciesLink, All Odonata and Puget Sound University. A total of 182 Odonata species were recorded, spanning nine families and 57 genera. The most representative family was Libellulidae (80 species) followed by Coenagrionidae (41 species) and seven species are new records for Rio Grande do Sul. The list of species presented here is a significant advance compared to previous counts for Rio Grande do Sul, however, our list is by no means a final one. Some regions of the state remain poorly explored, such as the border to Uruguay also in the northernmost part of the state. Several families remain poorly sampled, especially those that inhabit small forested streams and probably there are many specimens which are not cataloged and identified yet in scientific collections, both in the state and in the country.

ABSTRACT The taxonomic revision of Amorimia (Malpighiaceae) is presented, including typifications, and descriptions for all accepted species. The genus is endemic to Seasonally Dry Tropical Forests and Rainforests of South America, and its species can be distinguished by morphological details of leaves, indumenta, inflorescences, flowers, and fruits. This study includes an identification key for the subgenera and species of Amorimia, illustrations, distribution maps, conservation risk assessments, and comments on ecology, nomenclature, and taxonomy for all species. Additionally, I provide a key to differentiate Amorimia from the remaining genera of the Malpighioid clade.

This study provides the first record of the exotic invasive bivalve Isognomon bicolor for the State of Paraíba, Northeastern Brazil. It has been found to occur in at least twelve coastal reefs along the coast. We also present its first record for the State of Alagoas and new record localities for the States of Rio Grande do Norte and Pernambuco, including its occurrence in hypersaline estuaries. From these records the distribution range of I. bicolor has been expanded to the littoral region of Northeast Brazil, where this invasive species seems well established.

The Praxelinae comprises two genera—Praxelis and Chromolaena—and 19 species in Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost State of Brazil. This is the first taxonomic treatment of these genera in the state according to their current circumscriptions. Chromolaena squarrosoramosa is formally reported for the first time for the flora of the state. The names C. callilepis and C. paraguariensis are used for the first time to refer to species previously known as Eupatorium polyanthum and E. angusticeps. Eupatorium angusticeps, considered in previous studies endemic to Rio Grande do Sul and probably extinct, is synonymized under C. paraguariensis and has its geographical range extended. Two neglected names, C. elliptica and C. latisquamulosa, are re-established, and C. umbelliformis is synonymized under C. elliptica. Furthermore, C. rhinanthacea is recollected for the first time after 40 years, and C. gentianoides is rediscovered in the state after almost 200 years of the original collection. Identification key and morphological descriptions, as well as distribution maps, field photographs, illustrations and general comments on the biology, ecology and identification of the species are provided.

Neognathophausia ingens (Dohrn, 1870) is a bathypelagic crustacean distributed worldwide. In the western Atlantic it has been recorded off the La Plata region, Argentina, and off the coast of Brazil, from the state of Bahia to Rio de Janeiro. We provide new records of N. ingens from the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, about 1188 km south of its previous distribution limit off Brazil, filling the gap between the central West Atlantic and Argentina. Five specimens were analyzed and drawings for all body regions and appendages are presented. Mandible, thoracopods 2, 4, 5, 6 and 8 and pleopods are illustrated and described for the first time. An updated synonym list and a distribution map for this species in Brazil are provided.

During a series of zooplankton surveys carried out during 1984, off the south coast of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, several species of monstrilloids were present in the samples. A total of 50 individuals of monstrilloid copepods were collected. These belong to four species (Monstrilla brasiliensis Suárez-Morales & Dias, Cymbasoma cf. longispinosum, Cymbasoma cf. rigidum, and Cymbasoma gracilis Gurney). The taxonomic complexes formed by the species C. cf. longispinosum and C. cf. rigidum in Brazilian waters are discussed. The lengths of the specimens are provided in order to contribute to studies and revisions of the specimens belonging to these species-complexes. The species Monstrilla brasiliensis is recorded for the first time in the Rio Grande do Norte coastal region, thus expanding its geographical range in the Brazilian northeastern coast. The results presented herein increase to four the number of species of Monstrilloida known from off Rio Grande do Norte state.

Rio Grande do Sul (RS) is the southernmost state in Brazil and includes areas within the Pampa and Atlantic Forest biomes. The semiaquatic bugs (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Gerromorpha) from RS are poorly known, with only 14 previously recorded species. We carried out two expeditions in this state, in 2002 and 2019, across 19 municipalities. Here, we provide new records for 19 species, of which 13 are recorded for the first time from the state, five have their distributions expanded, and one is recorded again from a same locality previously reported in the literature. Furthermore, 13 species were collected for the first time in the Pampa biome and one in the Atlantic Forest.
