The geochemical characterization of thirteen Serra Geral Group flows in the Vista Alegre region (RS-SC), southern Brazil, displays the homogeneous basaltic composition near 50 wt.% SiO2. Each of the five basal flows (Pitanga-type, high-Ti/Y ~600, TiO2 > 3 wt.%) and eight upper flows (Paranapanema-type, medium Ti/Y ~400, TiO2 > 2 wt.%) can be identified from their chemical composition; sets of flows have parallel variation in chemical composition. The flow-by-flowcorrelation in four sections shows the horizontal position of the flows in three profiles and an approximately 200-m downdrop of the Itapiranga block with respect to the Frederico Westphalen block. The world-class amethyst geode mineralization and the systematic presence of native copper in the basalts make the correlation of great geological and economic significance.

ABSTRACT Constraints on impact-related hydrothermal alteration are important to enable the reconstruction of the possible processes affecting the surface of other terrestrial planets, such as Mars. Terrestrial impact structures excavated in basaltic targets provide the opportunity for analog studies. In Brazil, seven impact structures have been confirmed so far. Three of them, Vargeão Dome, Vista Alegre, and Cerro do Jarau, were formed in the same basaltic province belonging to the Paraná Basin, and they have several common characteristics. Oxidized basaltic breccias locally containing sandstone clasts occur in all these structures. In this work, selected samples of such breccias from the Vargeão Dome impact structure in southern Brazil were petrographically and geochemically investigated to further constrain the effects of the postimpact hydrothermal alteration. The breccia matrix shows typical oxidation effects induced by postimpact hydrothermal fluids, which highlight its heterogeneous nature, related to the impact event, and mixing components from different pre-impact stratigraphic formations. The detection of partially dissolved exsolution lamellae in pyroxene and of related alteration products constrains the effects of hydrothermal alteration in the basalts of the Vargeão Dome, which could serve as a terrestrial analog for planetary studies.

The existing polymer microbeads for skin extraction ingredients have many disadvantages in environment. The application of cellulose has been proven in the pharmaceutical field in the form of beads on drug release can be a substitute alternative to polymer microbeads that will be prohibited. Based on several criteria and past researches, cellulose acetate meets the criteria for microbeads replacement. Cellulose is available in large quantities in the world, and many studies has proven its application on a wide scope. Empty Fruit Bunches (EFB) and Dried Jackfruit Leaves (DJL) are widely distributed raw materials in Indonesia so that they can be used as a substitute for microbeads. The FTIR and SEM-EDX tests were conducted to determine the functional groups of cellulose acetate and morphology formation of cellulose acetate both raw materials and their chemical composition. In FTIR testing, the typical absorption of EFB and DJL cellulose acetate is produced by C=O groups for EFB at wavelength 1721,36 cm-1 and DJL at wavelength 1725,22 cm-1, whereas at SEM-EDX, DJL cellulose acetate asymmetrical cylinders and rare small pores on the surface and cellulose acetate TKKS cylindrical symmetrical with small pores on its surface. The chemical components of EFB and DJL cellulose acetate exhibit organic elements of carbon (C) and oxygen (O).

Due to the increase in pecan nuts demand, plantation areas are expanding around the world and more frequent epidemics caused by fungal pathogens may occur in orchards and nurseries. Ragnhildiana diffusa is a pathogenic fungus reported to cause brown leaf spots on pecans in numerous countries. The scarcity of comprehensive information in symptoms on the host and morphology of the fungus lead this disease to be initially incorrectly identified in Brazil. In this study, we employed different approaches to characterize the pathogen morphology and pathogenicity and to molecularly identify the organism causing brown leaf spots in southern Brazil. A phylogenetic analysis based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and the large subunit (LSU) gene sequences confirmed R. diffusa as the causal pathogen of the disease. Inoculation tests on healthy leaflets confirmed pathogenicity isolates, although some variation in their virulence was observed. Variation in the morphology of the asexual stage was observed among and within isolates. This study brought unprecedented morphological, genetic and pathogenic information that aids elucidating the disease. The accurate and prompt identification of the disease may assist in controlling further spread of the pathogen into orchards and nurseries still free of the disease in South America.

World-class sports events such as Olympic and Paralympic Games, universiades, Football World Cups, etc. have great social and economic significance. Apart from their direct sports mission they are closely linked with a large inflow of investments which accelerate development and fundamental change of the cities’ image, improvement of their infrastructure, and economics, and provide new life for the regions. Changes connected with establishing a new well-planned infrastructure ensure a long-term economic and social effect on the nationwide scale which boosts the reputation of any country. Positive changes inspired by the Games are the reasons why more and more countries compete to be the host for such events.

Cape Breton Island is a well-known North American tourism destination with long-standing attractions such as the Cabot Trail and more recently developed world-class offerings such as the Cabot Links Golf Course. Tourism contributes significantly to Cape Breton’s economy, particularly since the mid-20th century as traditional resource-based industries have declined. In the 21st century, culinary tourism has become increasingly important to expand the island’s tourism offerings and to provide “authentic” tourism experiences. This study examines local-food tourism in Cape Breton to illuminate its cultural and economic significance. I conducted interviews with food producers, restaurateurs, government representatives, and tourism executives. I also consulted websites and policy documents and compared local stakeholders’ experiences and perspectives with official tourism strategies. Promoting culinary tourism raises questions of power, autonomy, inclusion, and accountability. My study accentuates possibilities for aligning economic and ecological goals to create resilient communities, foster equitable social and ecological relations, and establish Cape Breton as a culinary tourism destination.
