This research focuses on the synthesis of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) decorated with TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) and incorporated in cellulose acetate-collagen film in order to obtain a new biomaterial with potential biomedical applications and improved antimicrobial activity. The successful decoration of the MWCNTs with TiO2 NPs was confirmed by several structural and morphological analysis, such as Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The obtained nanocomposites were further incorporated into cellulose acetate-collagen films, at different concentrations and absorption kinetics, antimicrobial activity and in vitro biocompatibility of the obtained films was investigated. The antimicrobial tests sustained that the presence of the nanocomposites into the polymeric matrix is an important aspect in increasing and maintaining the antimicrobial activity of the polymeric wound dressings over time. The biocompatibility and cytotoxicity of the obtained films was evaluated using cellular viability/proliferation assay and fluorescent microscopy which revealed the ability of the obtained materials as potential wound dressing biomaterial.

This study aimed to evaluate a nonwoven (NW) production and performance from cellulose acetate fiber from cigarette butts andapplied to a filtration system for surface water pre-treatment. The system had a surface area of 692 cm³, cellulose acetate from cigarette butt as filter media, was used and was fed with surface water from a pond. In order to evaluate the treatment performance of the filtration system were evaluated in the raw water (RW) and the filtered water (FW) the classical parameter of water quality as turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS), apparent color, true color, and total organic carbon (TOC) and heavy metals (iron, copper, and cadmium). Moreover, the presence of nicotine was investigated in the FW. The results showed a mean removal efficiency in order to 62.01%, 54.42%, 50.36 %, 6.73%, and 5.20% for turbidity, TSS, apparent color, true color, and TOC, respectively. The removal of metals varied in the order of 72.26%, 9.61%, and 2.12% for cadmium, iron, and copper, respectively. The presence of nicotine in RW and FW was not identified. In this way, besides reducing the negative environmental impacts caused by cigarette butts present in the environment, the developed technology showed potential for removing pollutants present in surface waters.

The development of new antimicrobial polymeric materials is in prominence due to its versatility of applications, especially for the manufacture of active packaging food. Cellulose acetate is an example of polymeric material used to this purpose, due to its characteristics of biodegradability and easy processing, in addition its natural origin and no toxicity. Geranyl acetate is an ester derived from geraniol, which has good antimicrobial properties and good thermal stability, which makes it interesting to be applied as an antimicrobial agent, avoiding the trivial and often problematic metallic nanoparticles and also volatile essential oils. In this work, antibacterial and antifungal cellulose acetate films were obtained through the incorporation of geranyl acetate ester (in concentrations of 0.5 and 1.0% v/v), by using the casting technique. This new material was tested against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and fungi. Results showed that it is possible to obtain antibacterial and antifungal cellulose acetate films with the incorporation of geranyl acetate ester, with excellent antibacterial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and good antifungal activity.
