The morphology of Schistosoma mansoni adult male worms from three strains which have been maintained in albino mice for several generations, was compared to a strain that has been isolated from the natural host Nectomys squamipes (Rodentia: Muridae) captured in Sumidouro (Rio de Janeiro State) and have been maintained in the same sylvatic rodent under laboratory conditions. Total length of specimens, distance between suckers, the number of testes and extention of testes grouping were the taxonomic characters analysed. The worms recovered from N. squamipes showed expressive differences (p< 0.01) compared to the other strains regarding the considered morphological characters. The strains that were maintained in mice presented statistical differences (p< 0.01) in several characters. Some adult worms besides the normal position of the testes also showed an atypical arrangement of these glands. It can be concluded that the morphology of adult worms may be used to distinguish S. mansoni strains and that morphological changes in adult worms are not induced by successive inoculations of a strain in mice.

AbstractObjectiveTo evaluate the validity of food photographs used to support the reporting of food intake with an FFQ designed for adolescents from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.DesignA set of ninety-five food photographs was elaborated. The photographs’ evaluation process included the acknowledgement of foods and portions in the pictures. In the identification of foods (ninety-five photographs) and typical portions (twelve photographs), the adolescents were requested to answer a structured questionnaire related to the food photographs. The identification of the portion size of amorphous foods (forty-three photographs) was performed using three different portion sizes of actual preparations. The proportions (and 95 % confidence intervals) of adolescents who correctly identified foods and portion size in each photograph were estimated.SettingA public school in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil.SubjectsSixty-two adolescents between 11·0 and 18·9 years old, randomly selected.ResultsAt least 90 % of adolescents correctly identified the food in ninety-two photographs and the food in the three remaining photographs was recognized by 80–89 % of the adolescents. At least 98 % of the adolescents correctly identified eleven typical or natural portions in the food photographs. For amorphous foods, at least 70 % of teenagers correctly identified the portion size in the photograph of thirty-one foods; for the other photographs, the portion size was correctly recognized by 50–69 % of the adolescents for eight foods and by less than 50 % of adolescents for four foods.ConclusionsThe analysed photographs are appropriate visual aids to the reporting of food consumption by adolescents.

The aim of this study was to compare the population structure of the invasive bivalve Isognomon bicolor in three different areas on the coast of Rio de Janeiro State and to verify its temporal variation. All the areas presented high densities, reaching more than 1000 live individuals per 100 cm2. The number of dead individuals and recruits was higher in Ilha do Brandão (Angra dos Reis) than in the other areas. The individuals sampled at Praia Vermelha (Rio de Janeiro) presented the highest maximum and mean sizes, compared to those found at Ilha do Brandão. In this area, vermetid molluscs are dominant and build a complex reef structure where only a few individuals of I. bicolor can really grow.

AbstractFifteen years after our first investigation, a follow-up study was carried out with the purpose of assessing the evolution of schistosomiasis in the locality of Sabugo, Paracambi, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, an area with low prevalence of the disease. The coprological techniques adopted were spontaneous sedimentation and Kato-Katz. Out of the 1356 individuals assessed, 13 (1%) were infected with Schistosoma mansoni. From those, 10 were males, 12 were over 15 years old, and at least 11 had been infected in Sabugo. All patients presented either the intestinal or the hepato-intestinal form of the disease, and 8 (61.5%) harboured light parasitic loads. In 1990, there were 27 (2.7%) infected individuals; less than half harboured light parasitic loads, with the predominance of moderate and heavy forms. Although our results indicate an improvement in the epidemiological situation of schistosomiasis in Sabugo, transmission of the disease in the locality is still active, especially among young males, and tends to be acquired during leisure activities.

An abnormal adult male of Lamachus sp., with a single eye, was reared in the summer of 1939 at Belleville, Ont., from a second-generation cocoon of the spruce sawfly, Diprion polytomum (Htg.), collected at Milicin, Czechoslovakia, in September, 1938. The eye (Figs. 1 and 2) occupies the normal position on either side of the head but is continuous over the vertex and extends anteriorly to the antenna1 sutures. The bases of the antennae are closer together than, and arise from the head in a position slightly ventral to, normal. There are no ocelli present. The head is about three-quarters the length and five-eighths the width of that of an average normal specimen, and gives the appearance of being globular in shape. The other appendages of the head appear normai in shape and position.

A species of the genus Amorphinopsis is described for the first time for the Atlantic Ocean. The new species was described based on the study of 25 specimens, collected in the area of the São Sebastião Channel and its environs (northern sector of São Paulo State coastline) and in the Cabo Frio region (Rio de Janeiro State). The form is massive cushion-shaped, lobate, occasionally encrusting. The megascleres are styles [160–260 (N=20)/5–10 (N=10) μm; length/thickness] and oxeas [150–900 (N=100)/5–18 (N=20) μm]. Amorphinopsis atlantica sp. nov. differs from the other species of Amorphinopsis by its colour, dark-greyish-green with or without yellow tinges on the exposed surface, and the smaller size of its oxeas. Amorphinopsis excavans is the closest species to the Brazilian material, but can still be set apart by a series of smaller traits, such as oxeas and styles never overlapping (the smaller oxea is always larger than the larger style).

Stenochironomus munteanpurin sp. n. is described and illustrated in all life stages, except eggs, from Brazil. The male is very similar to Stenochironomus quadrinotatus Borkent, 1984 due to same overall pattern of pigmentation. The new species can be distinguished from the other related species principally in immature stages: larva with labral lamella arranged in two groups with one or two conical-shaped teeth, spicules of pecten epipharyngis arranged in a row, unequal and irregularly distributed sizes, SI bifurcated, SII pinnate, SIII pinnate setae and, larval exuviae is compacted; pupa with shagreens being in all TI, less number of hooklets in TII, TVII without shagreens and presence of shagreen in conjunctive III/IV and IV/V. Adult male is very similar to the one of S. quadrinotatus but can be distinguished by combination of the TIX with more than 25 setae medially and phallapodeme curved anteriorly. The new species were collected in the following Brazilian states: Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina, Bahia and Acre.

The Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon is a brackish aquatic body, lies within the coordinates 22º57'02"- 22º52'09" S and 43º11'09" -43º13'03" W, in the Rio de Janeiro State. The psammic cyanobacteria live in the surface of the sediment and between the clastic grains, mainly quartz. The objective of the present study was identification of the psammic cyanobacteria found in the marginal portion of the lagoon and the determination of physical -chemical parameters (dissolved oxygen, salinity, temperature of the water and sediment and pH) in the places of sampling of the psammic cianobacteria. Sampling during the year of 2007 had been carried through, in the period of ebb tide of the lagoon, where five sample stations had been established. The taxonomic analisys was made with fresh and permanent slides, through optic microscope mensuration, that allowed to observe its classic morphological characteristics. The families Chroococcaceae Nägeli 1849 and Synechococcaceae Komárek & Anagnostidis 1995 is most frequent, for 41% and 18,2% respectively of the joined species. The other observed families presented the following percentages: Phormidiaceae Anagnostidis & Komárek 1988 with 13,4%; Entophysalidaceae Geitler 1925; Schizothrichaecae Anagnostidis & Komárek 1988; Oscillatoriaceae former (Harvey) Kirchener 1898 and Nostocaceae Kutzing 1943 each one with 4,5%
