Background - The laparoscopic ventral hernia repair technique made possible surgeries with smaller skin incisions and smaller dissection of the soft tissue around the hernia, therefore with a better wound, a quicker postoperative recovery and a lower complication rate. Aim - To evaluate the applicability of a quality of life survey based on the molds of the American Hernia Society, European Hernia Society and Carolinas Equation for Quality of Life, through telephone in patients submitted to laparoscopic hernioplasty by IPOM technique. Methods - A retrospective cohort study was made to evaluate the quality of life of 21 patients that underwent anterior abdominal wall laparoscopic hernioplasty by intraperitoneal onlay mesh technique. Questionnaire was applied through telephone. Results - Of the 21 patients, 19% felt that the hernia recurred. Also 19% passed through another abdominal wall surgery, and among these, 75% was related to the previously hernia correction. Finally, 81% of patients did not undergo any other abdominal wall surgery. Conclusion - It was possible to apply the quality of life questionnary by telephone on patients who underwent an anterior abdominal wall. The results, in its turn, were satisfactory and showed that patients, in general, were satisfied with the surgical procedure.

Investigating life quality is remaining high in the context of healthcare reforming processes and in modern medicine. An increase in the number of surgical operations for cosmetic defects of the anterior abdominal wall, an increase in the requirements for treatment results, forced surgeons to look for alternative methods of treatment that would significantly reduce aesthetic defects and improve the quality of life by examining the effect of surgical treatment on the mental and physical components of health. This predetermined the purpose of this study. To achieve the goal, the results of a comprehensive clinical examination and correction of 81 patients with cosmetic defects of the anterior abdominal wall, who took the treatment at the clinic of the Department of Surgery No. 3, Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy, from 2012 – 2019, were analyzed. The main group (41) was operated on by using the biomechanical methods of abdominoplasty worked up by the author, taking into account the best angle of direction of the stress vectors in the tissue of the upper transverse skin-fat flaps in the postoperative period during stress relaxation. The comparison group consisted of 40 people operated on by standard techniques of mobilization and fixation of skin-fat flaps. Quality of life was assessed the day before the operation and 6 months after, according to the EUROQol-5S-5D questionnaire system. Based on the analysis of the results, the following conclusions have been drawn: surgical correction of cosmetic defects of anterior abdominal wall causes psycho-emotional and physiological prerequisites for growing physical activity of patients, and in 6 months in positively effects the self-assessment of patients’ health status. Overweight patients demonstrate a statistically significant decrease in body mass index during the year, which is inversely correlated with an improvement in the scores on the rating scale and a weak correlation with a change in the average scoring and self-assessment of body weight. This integrated technique for performing abdominoplasty in patients with cosmetic defects of the anterior abdominal wall has been proven as effective means, which can improve the quality of life of surgical patients.

AbstractThe aim of the study was evaluation of long-term results after simultaneous incisional hernia repair and abdominoplasty in patients following RYGB (Roux-en-Y Gastric By-pass) and estimation of quality of life before and after this complex operation.Material and methods. We analyzed long-term results in 18 patients who underwent complex anterior abdominal wall surgery after massive weight loss, following previous RYGB. The patients were followed-up for at least 8 years. We compared the quality of life before and after hernia repair combined with abdominoplasty.Results. Observed wide postoperative scar in 4 persons, permanent dysesthesia in one, and flaccidity of the anterior abdominal wall in three cases. Estimation of the quality of life revealed significant improvement in functional, aesthetic and psychological aspects after complex surgery.Conclusions. 1. Simultaneous incisional hernia repair and abdominoplasty resulted in satisfactory long-term postoperative results, which confirms the efficiency of complex anterior abdominal wall surgery in patients following RYGB after massive weight loss. 2. Surgery in patients afflicted with disfigurements of the anterior abdominal wall contributed to significant improvement in their life quality in functional, aesthetic and psychological aspects, as compared with preoperative estimations. 3. All persons confirmed positive influence of abdominal wall surgery on their possibility to take challenges in life, and fulfill plans. 4. Surgery of the anterior abdominal wall deformities, if needed after massive weight loss, should become an integral part of complex multidisciplinary treatment in postbariatric individuals.

The exstrophy-epispadias complex is a rare spectrum of malformations affecting the genitourinary system, anterior abdominal wall, and pelvis. Historically, surgical outcomes were poor in patients with classic bladder exstrophy and cloacal exstrophy, the two more severe presentations. However, modern techniques to repair epispadias, classic bladder exstrophy, and cloacal exstrophy have increased the success of achieving urinary continence, satisfactory cosmesis, and quality of life. Unfortunately, these procedures are not without their own complications. This review provides readers with an overview of the management of the exstrophy-epispadias complex and potential surgical complications.

A stoma is a surgically created opening between a hollow viscus and the skin. Abdominal stomas are used to divert the flow of bowel contents or urine into a bag attached to the skin of the anterior abdominal wall. It is estimated that 1 in 500 people in the UK are currently living with a stoma, and approximately 13 500 people undergo stoma formation every year. Understanding why patients have stomas, how these should be managed, and what potential complications may arise from their formation can help healthcare professionals to provide safe and effective patient care. It is also important to appreciate the impact of a stoma on a patient and how this may affect quality of life.

The healing processes of sutured wounds of soft tissues in most cases depend on the type and quality of the suture material. Any kind of suture material in the tissues of the body is a foreign body that causes various reactive changes from the tissues. The nature of these changes, all other things being equal, is mainly determined by the type of suture material, its thickness and the method of sterilization of the tissues on which the sutures are applied, the trauma of surgery, the infection of the wound and the irritating effect of the threads on the tissues.

Abstract Aim determine themes reported as important to Quality of Life (QoL) in Complex Abdominal Wall Hernia (CAWH) patients Material and Methods 15 purposively sampled CAWH patients were interviewed using topic guides (8 men and 7 women aged between 36 to 85 years [median = 65 years] covering all VHWG grades). All verbatim transcripts were coded and analysed using NVIVO12 software and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) until thematic saturation. Results 3 overarching groupings and 5 superordinate themes were identified. Each superordinate theme is associated with several subordinate themes: Conclusions This is the first phenomenological qualitative study in CAWH patients. The themes presented are interrelated and should shape our understanding of QoL in CAWH. Current QoL tools do not incorporate all aspects identified by this study. Further research is needed in order to generate a standardised CAWH QoL instrument which incorporates bio-psycho-emotional-social processes important to patients as identified by patients.
