This article provides an overview of Watson’s theory of Human Caring, the notion of Caritas and human phenomena. Special emphasis is placed upon the theoretical structure of human caring theory referred to as 10 Carative Factors/Caritas Processes and subjective living processes and experiences. These core conceptual aspects of the theory and human living processes are grounded within the philosophical and ethical foundation of the body of my caring theory work. Together they serve as a guide for professional practice, as well as a disciplinary blueprint for the Science of Care.

Professional practice models (PPMs) guide nursing practice, professional behaviors, and clinical leadership. Health care continues to evolve (e.g., through health system mergers), and nurses may need to adopt and understand new PPMs to confidently align their interventions and professional nursing practice accordingly. The purpose of this project was to create an educational module about a new PPM based on the model of relationship-based care (RBC), which was adopted following a health system merger. The module was presented to a sample of nursing staff and leaders, who subsequently evaluated how it changed their confidence in and understanding and application of RBC in their professional nursing practice. Quantitative data showed that the module was an effective method to increase nurses' understanding of, and confidence in providing care utilizing, the RBC model. Qualitative data analysis generated themes (team building, need for self-care, being present, lack of time and resources, and resistance to or fear of change) about how implementation of RBC as the organization's PPM would change professional nursing practice, and barriers related to its implementation.

The desire of community hospitals to build more professionalism into nursing practice through the implementation of a practice philosophy and model can be driven by several factors, including practice needs, consistency, and/or a Magnet Recognition journey. The development team for this institution provided 30 2-hour sessions on professional practice to nurses on all shifts. This training was mandatory, with typical resistance for such programs. The rollout strategy wove cognitive and affective teaching methods that integrated head and heart, with very positive outcomes identified in postprogram evaluations.

ABSTRACT Objective: To identify the instruments used to evaluate the professional nursing practice environments in the hospital context. Method: An integrative review, whose research process was conducted independently by two researchers in the period from July to August 2019 in the CINHAL, PubMed and SciELO databases. Results: Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 53 studies published between 2009 and 2019 were considered for analysis. Ten instruments and three thematic areas were identified: instruments for the assessment of the nursing professional practice environments; implications of the use of instruments for the assessment of nursing professional practice environments; limitations of the instruments for the assessment of nursing professional practice environments. Conclusion: Despite the relevance of the instruments identified, this integrative review provides contributions that support the need to use specific tools to assess the nursing practice environments that include the structure, process and outcome components.
