Research on the condition of the nesting habitat of Chelonia mydas (green turtle) in Pangumbahan Beach, Ujung Genteng, South Sukabumi has been carried out. Data retrieval is done 6 times for 2 days, 27-28 November 2017 at 3 observation stations. The abiotic parameters measured include surface temperature and depth of 50 cm, surface humidity and depth of 50 cm, beach width, beach slope, and the size of sand grains. While the biotic parameters measured were density, relative density, the frequency of attendance, and distribution patterns of Pandanus tectorius (sea pandanus) vegetation. Based on the results of data processing, the biophysical conditions in Pangumbahan Beach are still suitable for the Chelonia mydas nesting habitat. It also got clear evidence of the many Chelonia mydas landings during the data collection.

AbstractGroup-size variation is common in colonially breeding species, including seabirds, whose breeding colonies can vary in size by several orders of magnitude. Seabirds are some of the most threatened marine taxa and understanding the drivers of colony size variation is more important than ever. Reproductive success is an important demographic parameter that can impact colony size, and it varies in association with a number of factors, including nesting habitat quality. Within colonies, seabirds often aggregate into distinct groups or subcolonies that may vary in quality. We used data from two colonies of Adélie penguins 73 km apart on Ross Island, Antarctica, one large and one small to investigate (1) How subcolony habitat characteristics influence reproductive success and (2) How these relationships differ at a small (Cape Royds) and large (Cape Crozier) colony with different terrain characteristics. Subcolonies were characterized using terrain attributes (elevation, slope aspect, slope steepness, wind shelter, flow accumulation), as well group characteristics (area/size, perimeter-to-area ratio, and proximity to nest predators). Reproductive success was higher and less variable at the larger colony while subcolony characteristics explained more of the variance in reproductive success at the small colony. The most important variable influencing subcolony quality at both colonies was perimeter-to-area ratio, likely reflecting the importance of nest predation by south polar skuas along subcolony edges. The small colony contained a higher proportion of edge nests thus higher potential impact from skua nest predation. Stochastic environmental events may facilitate smaller colonies becoming “trapped” by nest predation: a rapid decline in the number of breeding individuals may increase the proportion of edge nests, leading to higher relative nest predation and hindering population recovery. Several terrain covariates were retained in the final models but which variables, the shapes of the relationships, and importance varied between colonies.

Strong relationships between seasonal flooding, instream habitat structure and fish assemblages have been well documented in large tropical rivers (e.g. the flood pulse concept). However, the mechanics of these relationships are likely to differ substantially in smaller coastal rivers, such as those in Costa Rica, south-east Brazil and Australia’s Wet Tropics. These systems typically feature steep upland streams with short, deeply incised lowland channels and poorly connected floodplains. This hypothesis was investigated by documenting spatial and temporal variation in fish-habitat relationships in the Mulgrave River, north-east Queensland. Sampling was conducted at four lowland sites under a range of flow conditions, from dry-season baseflows to a one-in-ten-year flood. Longitudinal environmental gradients and fine-scale habitat patches were important in regulating fish assemblage structure during the dry season. However, high wet-season flows, constrained by the deep channel, acted as disturbances rather than gentle flood-pulses. In particular, the mobilisation of bed sediments led to scouring of aquatic vegetation and a dramatic reduction in habitat heterogeneity. Seasonal movements of fish led to significant changes in assemblage structure – from a community dominated by Neosilurus ater, Hypseleotris compressa, Awaous acritosus and Redigobius bikolanus during the dry season, to one dominated by Nematalosa erebi, Ambassis agrammus and Glossamia aprion during the wet season. Based on these observations, together with information from the literature, a conceptual model of fish-habitat dynamics is presented that is better suited to small tropical rivers than those developed in larger systems with expansive floodplains.

The present communication is the first report of new distributional record of Ficus altissima Blume (Moraceae) in Tripura. F. altissima was found to be an important feeding and nesting habitat for forest frugivores, since the genus is very rich in diversity and is considered as a keystone species. This also possesses huge scope to understand the mechanism of interactions especially for conservation of rich avifaunal diversity. Brief description and field photographs are presented for facilitating easy identification of the species.

Expanding gull populations along the Columbia River have been implicated in depredations to threatened and endangered migrating salmon smolt. We tested a visual barrier made of woven black polypropylene fabric to discourage gull nesting. The barrier was installed on Upper Nelson Island, Benton County, Washington, in parallel rows spaced 5 m apart. Gulls used 87% of the 7.9 ha island as nesting habitat and we estimated >21 000 gull nests, 80% Ring-billed Gull Larus delawarensis and 20% California Gull L. califomicus nests. The zone with fencing had 84% fewer nests than the control zone. Silt fencing showed potential as a nonlethal bird management technique.
