Abstract Do birds detect and respond to forces acting on feathers through filoplumes, which appear to be unique mechanosensory feathers? If filoplumes function as sensors, their morphology should covary with the morphology of their companion feather to better detect feather movements and position. We explore covariation in filoplumes and primaries across 5 species of birds that vary in body size, molt strategy, and the functional life span of their primaries (Green-winged Teal [Anas crecca], Ring-billed Gull [Larus delawarensis], Turkey Vulture [Cathartes aura], Red-tailed Hawk [Buteo jamaicensis], and Red-winged Blackbird [Agelaius phoeniceus]). Filoplumes never extended beyond the coverts and inserted immediately adjacent to the base of their companion primaries, positioning them to detect subtle changes in feather vibration or movement. Far more variation in filoplume number and morphology was due to species differences than to individuals or position in the wing. Across species, filoplume length and number increased with calamus length of primaries. In the 2 species with growing primaries, the number and length of filoplumes were only weakly associated with molting primaries, suggesting that filoplumes were not replaced when their companion primary was replaced. Further, filoplumes associated with a growing primary were not replaced synchronously, leaving others to sense primary position and movement. Finally, filoplume number and length were greatest in Red-tailed Hawks, a species that carries individual feathers for multiple years, but links between filoplume morphology and molt strategy await broader comparative studies. Taken together, the morphology of filoplumes and their replacement schedule relative to their associated primary suggests that they are sensors, capable of detecting subtle differences in the position and movement of their companion feathers.

Interactions between parasite species may influence their distribution and abundance within communities. Experimental single-species infections of Diplostomum spp. in the gut of the definitive host, the Ringed-billed Gull (Larus delawarensis Ord, 1815), were compared with mixed-species infections to explore interactions among parasites. Three species of Diplostomum von Nordmann, 1832 (Digenea), designated as Diplostomum sp. 1, Diplostomum sp. 4, and Diplostomum baeri Dubois, 1937, were examined for intestinal distribution and fecundity in single and mixed infections. In single-species infections, most specimens of Diplostomum sp. 1 and D. baeri were recovered from the mid-region of the intestine, whereas Diplostomum sp. 4 were mainly present in the anterior region. Significant spatial displacement was observed only for D. baeri when Diplostomum sp. 1 was also present. Intensity was directly correlated to the number of occupied intestinal segments, and there was no significant difference in mean linear span for each species between single-species and mixed-species infections. Diplostomum sp. 4 had the highest mean number of eggs per worm in utero in single-species infections. In mixed-species infections, the fecundity of Diplostomum sp. 4 declined dramatically in the presence of Diplostomum sp. 1, whereas fecundity of Diplostomum sp. 1 increased in the presence of D. baeri. These results highlight interspecific interactions that may play a role in population dynamics of Diplostomum spp. and community structure.

Abstract Ring-billed Gull (Larus delawarensis) populations have dramatically increased throughout their geographic range with the largest concentrations in the Great Lakes region of Canada and the United States. Large populations of gulls cause conflict with humans at recreational beaches, where their effects on human health and safety include bacteria contamination from gull feces. We used border collies to harass and exclude gulls from beaches in summer 2012 and 2013, then measured gull numbers and Escherichia coli. Dogs were effective at reducing gull numbers by 56–76% during continuous and noncontinuous dog treatment periods. Levels of E. coli were lower on dog-treated beaches, but only during the first half of the summer. Mixed modeling analysis showed presence of dogs was a strong predictor of gull numbers and E. coli levels, with variation among dogs, possibly related to age. Noncontinuous use of dogs, applied within an integrated beach management framework, can provide a nonlethal method for reducing gull use and E. coli levels at recreational beaches.

With the expansion of urban centres in the mid-twentieth century and the post-1970 decrease in pesticides, populations of double-crested cormorants ( Phalacrocorax auritus ) and ring-billed gulls ( Larus delawarensis ) around Lake Ontario (Canada and USA) have rapidly rebounded, possibly to unprecedented numbers. Along with the use of traditional palaeolimnological methods (e.g. stable isotopes, biological proxies), we now have the capacity to develop specific markers for directly tracking the presence of waterbirds on nesting islands. Here, we apply the use of lipophilic sterols and stanols from both plant and animal-faecal origins as a reliable technique, independent of traditional isotopic methods, for pinpointing waterbird arrival and population growth over decadal timescales. Sterol and stanol concentrations measured in the guano samples of waterbird species were highly variable within a species and between the three species of waterbirds examined. However, cholesterol was the dominant sterol in guano, and phytosterols were also high in ring-billed gull guano. This variability highlights a specialist piscivorous diet for cormorants compared to a generalist, omnivorous diet for gulls, which may now often include grain and invertebrates from agricultural fields. A ratio that includes cholesterol and sitosterol plus their aerobically reduced products (cholestanol, stigmastanol) best explained the present range of bird abundance across the islands and was significantly correlated to sedimentary δ 15 N. Overall, we demonstrate the use of sterols and stanols as a direct means for tracking the spatial and temporal presence of waterbirds on islands across Lake Ontario, and probably elsewhere.
