The control of open quantum systems and their associated quantum thermodynamic properties is a topic of growing importance in modern quantum physics and quantum chemistry research. This unique and self-contained book presents a unifying perspective of such open quantum systems, first describing the fundamental theory behind these formidably complex systems, before introducing the models and techniques that are employed to control their quantum thermodynamics processes. A detailed discussion of real quantum devices is also covered, including quantum heat engines and quantum refrigerators. The theory of open quantum systems is developed pedagogically, from first principles, and the book is accessible to graduate students and researchers working in atomic physics, quantum information, condensed matter physics, and quantum chemistry.

In this paper we discuss magnetic properties of ConOm (n = 2,6, m = 0-9,12) nanoparticles. Based on quantum chemistry research results we present and consider reasons due to which magnetic properties of small particles are different.

Carbon thin films with diamond-like properties have generated significant interest in condensed matter science in recent years. Their extreme hardness combined with insulating electronic characteristics and high thermal conductivity make them attractive for a variety of uses including abrasion resistant coatings and applications in electronic devices. Understanding the growth and structure of such films is therefore of technological interest as well as a goal of basic physics and chemistry research. Recent investigations have demonstrated the usefulness of energetic ion beam deposition in the preparation of such films. We have begun an electron microscopy investigation into the microstructure and electron energy loss spectra of diamond like carbon thin films prepared by energetic ion beam deposition. The carbon films were deposited using the MEIRA ion beam facility at the Soreq Nuclear Research Center in Yavne, Israel. Mass selected C+ beams in the range 50 to 300 eV were directed onto Si {100} which had been etched with HF prior to deposition.

<p>In this manuscript we describe a modular pathway to synthesize biologically relevant (–)-<i>trans</i>-Δ8-THC derivatives, which can be used to modulate the pharmacologically important CB1 and CB2 receptors. This pathway involves a one-pot Friedel-Crafts alkylation/cyclization protocol, followed by Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions and gives rise to a series of new Δ8-THC derivatives. In addition, we demonstrate using extensive NMR evidence that similar halide-substituted Friedel-Crafts alkylation/cyclization products in previous articles were wrongly assigned as the para-isomers, which also has consequence for the assignment of the subsequent cross-coupled products and interpretation of their biological activity. </p> <p>Considering the importance of the availability of THC derivatives in medicinal chemistry research and the fact that previously synthesized compounds were wrongly assigned, we feel this research is describing a straightforward pathway into new cannabinoids.</p>
