Scientific researchers have applied newly developed technologies, such as sensors and actuators, to different fields, including environmental monitoring, traffic management, and precision agriculture. Using agricultural technology to assist crop fertilization is an important research innovation that can not only reduce the workload of farmers, but also reduce resource waste and soil pollution. This paper describes the design and development of a water-fertilizer control system based on the soil conductivity threshold. The system uses a low-cost wireless sensor network as a data collection and transmission tool and transmits the data to the decision support system. The decision support system considers the change in soil electrical conductivity (EC) and moisture content to guide the application of water-fertilizer, and then improves the fertilization accuracy of the water-fertilizer control system. In the experiment, the proposed water-fertilizer control system was tested, and it was concluded that, compared with the existing traditional water-fertilizer integration control system, the amount of fertilizer used by the system was reduced by 10.89% on average, and it could save 0.76–0.87 tons of fertilizer throughout the whole growth period of cotton.

The current study discusses about the development of an EMG based wireless control system for the patients suffering from high-level motor disability. Surface EMG (sEMG) signals were processed in the time domain and using discrete wavelet transforms (DWT). The statistical features of the signals (sEMG, envelope of the squared sEMG and wavelet processed sEMG) were determined and analyzed. The analysis of the features suggested that the features of the envelope of the squared sEMG signals were sufficient to be used for high-efficiency classification and control signal generation. A hall-effect sensor based switching mechanism was introduced for controlling the duration of the activation of the device. The control signals were wirelessly transmitted to the assistive device (robotic vehicle). The training and the subsequent use of the developed control system were easy.

This paper deals with the automation of the rock cutting process with roadheaders used widely in civil engineering for drilling roadways in underground mines and tunnels. Although there has been intensive technical development, roadheaders are still manually controlled. Manual control does not allow optimizing the values of the cutting process parameters, which often results in low mining efficiency, especially in the case of hard rocks, as well as high energy consumption and significant dynamic overloading of the roadheader. As part of theoretical and experimental research, an automatic control system was designed for the boom-type roadheader and an algorithm was developed for the optimal control of the cutting process parameters. Control criteria have been formulated, based on which the current values of the cutting process parameters are worked out using the information on the dynamic load state of the roadheader. The paper presents selected results of numerical tests conducted on roadheader dynamics, which simulated the automatic control system operation of the heading face cutting process of drilled roadway or tunnel. These tests were intended to analyze the behavior of the investigated object during simulated rock cutting in automatic mode. The results confirmed the possibility of a significant reduction in mining energy consumption.

This work introduces a new way to control hydraulic cylinder velocity using an inlet metering pump system to control the hydraulic flow entering the cylinder. The inlet metering system consists of a fixed displacement pump and an inlet metering valve that adjusts the hydraulic fluid flow entering the pump as required. The energy losses associated with flow metering in the system are reduced because the pressure drop across the inlet metering valve can be arbitrarily small. The fluid is supplied to the inlet metering valve at a fixed pressure using a charge pump. A velocity control system is designed using the inlet metering system as means to control the fluid flow to a hydraulic cylinder. In addition to the inlet metering system, the velocity control system designed in this work includes a four-way directional valve to set the fluid flow direction according to the desired direction of the hydraulic cylinder velocity. Open-loop and closed-loop proportional and proportional derivative (P and PD) controllers are designed. Designs with the goals of stability and performance of the system are studied so that a precise and smooth velocity control system for the hydraulic cylinder is achieved. In addition to potentially high efficiency of this system, there is potential for other benefits including low cost, fast response, and less complicated dynamics compared to other systems. The results presented in this work show that the inlet metering velocity control system can be designed so that the system is stable, there is zero overshoot and no oscillation.

This study aims to develop and evaluate an automated manual transmission (AMT) for agricultural tractors with high efficiency and high convenience by using electric actuators. An AMT system to control manual-type shuttle gearboxes and transmissions for tractors is developed by adding a shuttle shifting actuator, a clutch actuator, and a control system to a conventional manual transmission (MT). The clutch actuator is designed using an electric motor and a reduction gear. The AMT control system is developed and experimental tests are conducted to evaluate the performance of the AMT. The results of the performance of the actuator position control demonstrate that the shuttle shifting actuator and clutch actuator are controlled appropriately, achieving a maximum overshoot of less than 5% and 0%, a settling time of less than 0.500 s and 1.50 s, and a steady-state error of less than 1% and 1%, respectively. The performance of the automatic forward and reverse control demonstrates a shift control time of less than 2.50 s and target revolutions per minute (RPM) reaching time of less than 3.00 s. Thus, AMT systems for tractors can be easily developed by applying shuttle shifting actuators, clutch actuators, and a control system to conventional manual transmissions.
