With approximately 1,000 students enrolled, the Chinese Studies Department of the Inalco (National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations) is one of the largest Chinese language training centres in Europe. Founded in 1843, this department has about 40 teachers who give more than 70 classes per week. The courses are held exclusively in the Institute's premises. The brutal confinement following the health crisis that the whole world has experienced since the beginning of 2020 has been a real shock for the students and teachers who have seen their working and studying conditions totally modified. How did the department arrange courses to ensure good pedagogical continuity? How did the learners follow these courses and what were their assessments of the effectiveness of the courses offered? This article presents the results of two surveys of undergraduate and graduate students in the Department of Chinese Studies.

Everyone knows that phraseological units are the most popular genre of oral folk art, which was formed as a result of life observations of the ancestors. Learning and analyzing Chinese phraseology allow us to better understand the inner world of the Chinese nation. This article reveals and semantically analyzes aspects of the word “head” that are closely related to Chinese culture. The worldview, deep logical thoughts, feelings, superstitions, lifestyle and environment of the Chinese people are described in phraseological expressions in a concise and clear form. This article discusses the semantics and features of Chinese-language phraseological phrases associated with the word “head”. Chinese-language phrases associated with “head” express meanings such as wisdom and ignorance, process of thinking, cunning,sagacity, and planning. Phraseological units in Chinese linguistics are closely related to practical life and determine such features as philosophical and ideological thinking, logical observation. Taking into account the above, the article provides a comparative analysis of phraseological units related to “head” in Chinese and Uzbek languages. The figurative meanings of the word “head” are being revealed, semantic connections and semantic structure of phrases in the sentence are in the process of learning. Chinese phraseological expressions are poorly studied in Uzbek-Chinese studies. We hope that this work will provide practical assistance to our young people who are learning Chinese.

<p align="LEFT">Along with a considerable increase of the</p><p align="LEFT">people involved in studying Chinese culture and</p><p align="LEFT">Chinese language, Confucius Institute, initially</p><p align="LEFT">founded in 2004 in Seoul, South Korea,</p><p align="LEFT">provoked different reactions regarding to the</p><p align="LEFT">management and the activity held. Especially</p><p align="LEFT">on American press, the debate focused on what</p><p align="LEFT">the real aim of the project consists in, has been</p><p align="LEFT">retained responsible for political propaganda</p><p align="LEFT">and a threat for the academic freedom. Soon</p><p align="LEFT">the debate involved reporters, journalists,</p><p align="LEFT">Chinese Studies experts, sinologists and</p><p align="LEFT">Confucius Institutes directors from every part of</p><p>the world, leading the debate to an</p><p align="LEFT">international dimension. 32 articles published</p><p align="LEFT">since 2010 on the Italian national newspapers,</p><p align="LEFT">periodicals, specialized website and online</p><p align="LEFT">channels, have been collected and examined in</p><p align="LEFT">order to propose a critical analysis on how the</p><p align="LEFT">image of Confucius Institute is perceived in Italy</p><p align="LEFT">through examining the discourse of the Italian</p><p>press and the voices of the experts in the press.</p>

This chapter explores and analyzes the new methods that the China Biographical Database (CBDB) project team has developed and adopted to digitize reference works about Chinese history, which is part of the important process of turning them into structured biographical data. This workflow focuses on the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and has implications for the continued improvement in the technologies for digitization and research into historical biographies in the Chinese language. These explorations and outcomes also demonstrate attempts in the Chinese studies field to transform large amounts of texts in non-Latin script into structured biographical data in a semi-automated fashion, and are expected to benefit digital humanities research, especially initiatives focusing on the Asia-Pacific region.

Chinese classical art is an integral part of the course “An Introduction to Chinese Studies” for fourth-year students of the Faculty of Chinese Language and Culture, University of Languages and International Studies, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. Therefore, in order to provide an overview and better understanding of Chinese history, people and culture in general as well as Chinese art in particular, this paper synthesizes and analyzes the relationship between Chinese classical art through all Chinese dynasties. Accordingly, the great cultural value of Chinese classical art will be highlighted.

O artigo investiga a presença de elementos simbólicos, muitos deles associados ao pensamento religioso chinês, em um cartaz da Revolução Cultural Chinesa. Para tanto, utiliza uma metodologia que associa diferentes áreas do conhecimento: Estudos Chineses (dentro dos quais, Estudos da Religiosidade Chinesa), Língua Chinesa e os símbolos a ela associados, Simbolismo, História, Teoria do Cartaz e Sociologia da Imagem. A aproximação em relação à temática chinesa no cartaz passou por um esforço de tradução e análise do texto escrito que o compõe. Para se aproximar de elementos da História, cultura e simbolismo religioso sínico presentes na peça de propaganda, utilizaram-se trabalhos de scholars como M. Granet, A. Cheng (Escolas de Pensamento, Simbolismo Religioso), K. Stevens (Religiosidade Popular e Iconografia Religiosa) e J. Spence (História), bem como obras literárias e cinematográficas chinesas. No que respeita aos símbolos (em seu caráter universal), ajudaram as observações de M. Eliade. Em relação aos aspectos associados specificamente aos cartazes, apelou-se a L. Gervereau (História), A. Moles (Teoria do Cartaz) e V. Flusser (Sociologia da Imagem; Teoria da Leitura Imagética). Com base no cruzamento dos referenciais teóricos, demonstra-se que a intelligentsia da Revolução Cultural utilizou símbolos arcaicos – religiosos e políticos – em peças de propaganda devotadas a promover um discurso de destruição e substituição dos antigos valores. Archaic, magical and religious symbols in a Chinese cultural revolution poster This article investigates the presence of symbolic elements, many of them associated with Chinese religious thought, in a propaganda poster of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. To this end, using a methodology that combines different areas of knowledge: Chinese Studies (within which, the study of religiosity Chinese), Chinese language and symbols associated with it, Symbolism, History, Theory and Sociology Poster Image. The rapprochement with the Chinese theme became the poster, at first, by an effort of translation and analysis of written text that compose it. To approximate the elements of history, culture and religious symbolism present in the Sinic piece of propaganda, the authors used the work of scholars such as M. Granet, A. Cheng (Schools of Thought, Religious Symbolism), K. Stevens (Popular Religiosity and religious iconography) and J.Spence (History) as well as Chinese literary works and films. With regard to the symbols (in their universality), appealed to the observations of M. Eliade. In relation to issues associated specifically with posters, appealed to L. Gervereau (History), A. Moles (Poster Theory) and Flusser (Sociology of the Image, Imagery Theory of Reading. Based on the intersection of the theoretical, the authors have demonstrate that the intelligentsia of the Cultural Revolution used archaic symbols - religious and political - in advertising devoted to promoting a discourse of destruction and replacement of old values. The COVID-19 pandemic has reached far beyond the immediate public health crisis to significantly affect global political and economic structures. Informed by a political science perspective, the author examines how the virus serves as a magnifying glass, accelerating and making more visible long-term trends in Chinese domestic and foreign politics, and why Chinese studies expertise is crucial for shaping Europe’s response to these trends.
