Objective. The objective was to identify the presence of the capacity for reflexive-critical thinking or similar, in Nursing Curricula in Iberian America. Methods. The article gathers the results of one of the objectives of the macro-project developed by the Iberian American Network on Nursing Education Research, titled Strategies to develop reflective and critical thinking in nursing students: Iberian America situation. To achieve this, a descriptive and exploratory research was conducted with qualitative approach. An instrument created for this project was used, along with some guiding questions to focus the information. Results. Eight countries participated (Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Spain, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela), which contributed information from 189 curricular plans. The R&CT was found in the majority of the curricula, although with diverse denominations. The principal learning strategies used were problem-based learning, group dynamics, reflective reading, clinical practice, and simulation laboratories. The evaluation methods used are the knowledge test, case analysis, and practical exam. Conclusion. Significant stress exists in the discourse and curricular organization. Incongruences were found and a clear inclination toward the formation of professionals with broad technical skills under a traditional, memory, banking and knowledge accumulation education.

Critical thinking is the basis of professional nursing practice and is essential in the current complex health care delivery system. A major goal of baccalaureate nursing education is the development and promotion of students' ability to think critically. In America, the National League for nursing outcome-oriented accreditation process challenged nursing faculty to think about teaching and evaluating critical thinking. Based on nursing literature, the findings were inconsistent because of a lack of consensus on a definition of critical thinking and the measurement of critical thinking utilizing critical thinking instruments non-specific for nursing. However, a variety of teaching-learning strategies in nursing education were effective in the development of critical thinking dispositions and skills among nursing students. The author provides insight and ideas for nursing faculty as follows: 1) nursing programs must define critical thinking operationally in relation to their curricula; 2)nursing faculty must be knowledgeable concerning evaluation of critical thinking disposition and skills and construct a standardized critical-thinking instrument that is specific to the discipline of nursing; 3) nursing faculty must develop teaching-learning strategy in nursing education for improving students' critical thinking abilities. These are prerequisite for critical thinking which should be considered as a criterion in The Standards of Nursing Education in Korea.

Nurse educators need to be cognizant of their instructional methods to ensure they are using appropriate techniques to effectively teach students as adult learners. Andragogy is the practice of teaching adult learners; its role and application in concept-based nursing education in the online, classroom, and clinical teaching contexts are explored in this reflective literature review. Concept-based curriculum is a method of teaching that utilizes active learning strategies to aid in developing critical thinking skills and knowledge comprehension. Reflections on incorporating andragogy to teach in a concept-based curriculum in nursing by a novice educator is also presented along with selected teaching techniques that has been utilized to solidify nursing students learning. It has been shown that non-traditional teaching techniques such as simulation, case studies, debates, and creating a “flipped” classroom can be effective in applying andragogy in a concept-based curriculum model. Incorporating andragogy within the concept-based curriculum is vital for equipping nursing students with necessary critical thinking and reflection skills required for nursing practice.

Abstract Background Despite the advantages of using active learning strategies in nursing education, researchers have rarely investigated how such pedagogic approaches can be used to assess students or how interactive examinations can be modified depending on circumstances of practice (e.g., in online education). Aims The aim was to compare three interactive examination designs, all based on active learning pedagogy, in terms of nursing students’ engagement and preparedness, their learning achievement, and instructional aspects. Methods A comparative research design was used including final-year undergraduate nursing students. All students were enrolled in a quality improvement course at a metropolitan university in Sweden. In this comparative study to evaluate three course layouts, participants (Cohort 1, n = 89; Cohort 2, n = 97; Cohort 3, n = 60) completed different examinations assessing the same course content and learning objectives, after which they evaluated the examinations on a questionnaire in numerical and free-text responses. Chi-squared tests were conducted to compare background variables between the cohorts and Kruskal–Wallis H tests to assess numerical differences in experiences between cohorts. Following the guidelines of the Good Reporting of a Mixed Methods Study (GRAMMS), a sequential mixed-methods analysis was performed on the quantitative findings, and the qualitative findings were used complementary to support the interpretation of the quantitative results. Results The 246 students who completed the questionnaire generally appreciated the interactive examination in active learning classrooms. Among significant differences in the results, Cohort 2 (e.g., conducted the examination on campus) scored highest for overall positive experience and engagement, whereas Cohort 3 (e.g., conducted the examination online) scored the lowest. Students in Cohort 3 generally commended the online examination’s chat function available for use during the examination. Conclusions Interactive examinations for nursing students succeed when they are campus-based, focus on student preparation, and provide the necessary time to be completed.

To address this alarming concern, many prominent organizations have called for a widespread overhaul of nursing curricula.MethodsA consistent theme among the recommendations for revising nursing curricula is the utilization of innovative curricula designs that focus on enhancing the critical thinking ability of nursing students, such as a concept-based curriculum.ResultsPlanning and implementing a curriculum revision is an overwhelming undertaking.ConclusionsProviding nurse educators with a guide on how to transition to a concept-based curriculum may help to facilitate a course revision.

Pedagogical innovations applying flipped learning models are being applied in nursing education. The aim of this study was to verify the effects of the flipped learning approach in an anatomy class among undergraduate nursing students. This was a non-randomized controlled study. Of 154 nursing students enrolled in an anatomy class in South Korea, 79 were in the lecture-based group and 75 were in the flipped learning group. Data were collected using structured questionnaires. Problem solving ability and self-leadership improved significantly in the flipped learning group after the intervention but decreased in the lecture-based group. There was no difference in critical thinking between the flipped learning and control groups. The participants in the flipped learning group were more satisfied with the class than those in the lecture-based group. Flipped learning facilitates interactive activities that support the needs of advanced learners and provide more opportunities to develop problem-solving abilities and self-leadership.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between nursing students’ critical thinking disposition and autonomy levels. METHODS: The descriptive-relationship seeking study was conducted with 288 nursing students in the nursing department of a state university. Data were collected by using the Descriptive Characteristics Information Form, which included socio-demographic characteristics, California Critical Thinking Disposition Scale and Sociotropy-Autonomy Scale. Data were analyzed by number, percentage, mean, standard deviation and Pearson correlation tests. RESULTS: It was found that the students’ mean autonomy subscale of Sociotropy-Autonomy Scale score was 87.43±11.27 and the overall mean score of critical thinking disposition was 232.52±23.30. There was a statistically significant positive correlation between the students› overall mean scores of California Critical Thinking Disposition Scale and autonomy subscale scores of Sociotropy-Autonomy Scale (r = 0.526, p <0.010). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: In the study, the autonomy levels of the students were above the middle level; critical thinking disposition levels were low; There was a positive relationship between critical thinking disposition and autonomy levels. The results of the study suggest that nursing education curricula should be revised and restructured in order to raise students’ critical thinking and autonomy levels in nursing education.

Nursing higher education will challenge the dynamics of the work environment in the Industrial Revolution Era 4.0 and they will compete with digital technology. Critical thinking skills as one of the basic competencies must support higher education in preparation for the industrial revolution 4.0. Exploring thinking skills makes nursing students will be trained in their punishment and analysis skills according to their knowledge. Critical thinking skills not only guide students to develop continuing skills, but also help nursing students to be motivated to create innovation in college. The aims of this review is to learn the critical skills needed in higher education to prepare for the industrial revolution 4.0 based on literature understanding. There are 6 (six) important things about Critical Thinking in nursing education in the Industrial Revolution Era 4.0, namely Definition of Critical Thinking, Why do we need to focus on critical thinking in higher education, Why is critical thinking needed in industry 4.0 preparation, Industry Innovation 4.0 and human potential to overcome environmental problems, Critical Thinking in Nursing Education, and Educational Strategies for Developing Critical Thinking in Nursing. These critical thinking skills are suitable for equipping students in higher education before they enter different workplaces. Educational strategies in developing critical thinking skills by supporting the use of questions, small group activities, role plays, debates, use of case studies, journals, simulations, puzzles, problem solving and writing assignments. Nursing students are exposed to a vast amount of information and reading material that is very specific, technical, and new to the students. Unless nurse educators provide a learning environment that promotes understanding through interaction, students might only commit unassimilated information to their short-term memory through rote learning, and no meaningful learning will occur. Nursing students must be able to link learned facts, concepts and principles with new knowledge in order to make sound rational decisions in practice (All & Havens 1997:1210, 1213). The aim of this paper is to describe the utilisation of concept-mapping as a teaching method to facilitate critical thinking by students in nursing education. The description of the utilisation of concept-mapping is done from the theoretical framework of concept-mapping and critical thinking to provide the epistemological basis for concept-mapping (Facione 1990:6, 13). Based on the exploration and description of the theoretical frameworks, four steps to facilitate critical thinking were formulated through concept-mapping on the basis of the educational process: the identification, interactive constructing process, formulation and evaluation steps. It is concluded that the utilisation of these steps will assist nurse educators to implement conceptmapping as a teaching method to facilitate critical thinking by student nurses in nursing education. Hierdie artikel het ten doel om die aanwending van konsepkartering as 'n onderrigstrategie te beskryf, ten einde die kritiese denke van leerders in die verpleegkunde te fasiliteer. Die beskrywing van die aanwending van konsepkartering word vanuit die teoretiese raamwerke van konsepkartering en kritiese denke gedoen om die epistemologiese grondslag vir konsepkartering te voorsien (Facione 1990:6, 13). Gegrond op die verkenning en beskrywing van die teoretiese raamwerke, word vier fases vir die fasilitering van kritiese denke geformuleer deur middel van konsepkartering. Hierdie verkenning en beskrywing is gebaseer op die onderwysproses: die identifiseringsfase, die interaktiewe konstrueringsproses, die formuleringsfase en evalueringsfase. Die gevolgtrekking word gemaak dat die aanwending van hierdie fases verpleegopvoeders behulpsaam sal wees in die implementering van konsepkartering as 'n onderrigmetode om kritiese denke by leerling verpleërs te fasiliteer in verpleegkunde-onderwys. Aanbevelings word gemaak.

The COVID-19 pandemic created a paradigm shift in the way educators employ active learning strategies. In this chapter, the authors discuss how engaging and innovative learning strategies were developed to teach baccalaureate-level nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The initial focus is on the teaching and learning strategies created for first-semester students who are developing foundational nursing skills and concepts. The discussion transitions to complex strategies developed for fourth-semester students, solidifying critical thinking and clinical judgment skills. Highlighted are active learning strategies used in the classroom, skills lab, and simulated clinical environment. These promote clinical judgment and present practical direction for adapting technology to provide an engaging learning environment. Throughout the chapter, the authors use several strategies to showcase how a nursing program responded to COVID-19 restrictions, including active learning and technology strategies, and how they can be applied across a curriculum using varying levels of technology.
