As the energy footprint of data centers continues to increase, models that allow for “what-if” simulations of different data center design and management paradigms will be important. Prior work by the authors has described a multi-scale energy efficiency model that allows for evaluating the coefficient of performance of the data center ensemble (COPGrand), and demonstrated the utility of such a model for purposes of choosing operational set-points and evaluating design trade-offs. However, experimental validation of these models poses a challenge because of the complexity involved with tailoring such a model for implementation to legacy data centers, with shared infrastructure and limited control over IT workload. Further, test facilities with dummy heat loads or artificial racks in lieu of IT equipment generally have limited utility in validating end-to-end models owing to the inability of such loads to mimic phenomena such as fan scalability, etc. In this work, we describe the experimental analysis conducted in a special test chamber and data center facility. The chamber, focusing on system level effects, is loaded with an actual IT rack, and a compressor delivers chilled air to the chamber at a preset temperature. By varying the load in the IT rack as well as the air delivery parameters — such as flow rate, supply temperature, etc. — a setup which simulates the system level of a data center is created. Experimental tests within a live data center facility are also conducted where the operating conditions of the cooling infrastructure are monitored — such as fluid temperatures, flow rates, etc. — and can be analyzed to determine effects such as air flow recirculation, heat exchanger performance, etc. Using the experimental data a multi-scale model configuration emulating the data center can be defined. We compare the results from such experimental analysis to a multi-scale energy efficiency model of the data center, and discuss the accuracies as well as inaccuracies within such a model. Difficulties encountered in the experimental work are discussed. The paper concludes by discussing areas for improvement in such modeling and experimental evaluation. Further validation of the complete multi-scale data center energy model is planned.

Purpose. To study hydraulic losses in pumping units during pumping and transportation of liquids, to develop the design and technology solutions to improve the energy efficiency of centrifugal pumps in the mining and oil-producing industries. Methodology. In the theoretical and experimental analysis of hydraulic losses during the transportation of liquids, the hydraulics and experimental analysis methods were used. Findings. As a result of the research carried out, a new design scheme of a multistage centrifugal pump has been developed, providing a coaxial arrangement of impellers, which allows reducing hydraulic losses in pump elements and increasing the energy efficiency of pumping units. Originality. Based on the analysis of existing designs of multistage blowers of axial and centrifugal types, the distribution of hydraulic losses in the elements of a centrifugal blower with coaxial impellers is considered. Experimental dependences on the establishment of pressure flow and power characteristics are presented. Based on the accounting of hydraulic losses, the energy efficiency of the design of the pumping unit with the coaxial arrangement of the impellers was assessed. Practical value. The new design of a centrifugal pump with coaxial impellers reduces hydraulic losses by more than 23% compared to traditional designs of centrifugal pumps. The results of the work can be used by design, research, and industrial organizations engaged in the design and operation of pumping equipment.

The problem of real-time estimation of occupancy of buildings (number of people in various zones at every time instant) is relevant to a number of emerging applications that achieve high energy efficiency through feedback control. The measurement of CO2 concentration can be considered an important indicator that allows to define the occupation of closed and crowded spaces. Interesting cases can be school buildings and other buildings used in civil and residential (shopping centres, hospitals, etc.). This paper, starting from an experimental analysis in different classrooms of a University campus in real operating conditions, in different period of the year, proposes a possible correlation between CO2 concentration and the occupancy profile of the spaces. The acquired data are used to present some graphical correlations and to understand the most important variables or combination of them. Starting from an accurate analysis of the data, attempts are made to define a preliminary estimation method through the development of a mathematical models of occupancy dynamics in a building, which show interesting results.
