The publication describes the results of the research of the influence of laser welding mode parameters on geometry and quality of the formation of the welded joint of 316L steel with thickness of 1 mm. According to the results of research in the framework of pre-project works, in order to test the technology at the real objects, components of light metal structures were welded.

This paper is a study of the questions: (1) Are the simplified equations and design procedure in Limit Design that have been developed for application to structural steel construction, applicable without modification to light metal structures? (2) How do the properties of these metals which are different from those of steel affect the application of the theory? Do they offer any advantages? Any disadvantages? (3) What changes in traditional design procedure are warranted? What changes are imperative? No claim is made to a complete solution of the design problem, since each particular structure involves a thousand and one details. Only the broad fundamental philosophy is discussed here. The discussion and conclusions are supplemented with a report of a number of experiments on a few extrusions of some of the more important alloys of magnesium and of aluminium.

Light metal structures (LMS) are widely spread in domestic construction industry. A promising direction for the development of LMS includes prefabricated shell structures made of thin-gauge structural sections. The scope and operating conditions of such structures are quite extensive. In this regard, the development of a competent engineering methodology for calculating buildings using thin-gauge structural sections is required. The present paper describes a method for a full-scale testing of a shell building fragment and provides the results of forces and deformations calculated using the experimental model. In addition, an approach to modeling and dimensioning of finite elements for the profiles under consideration is described. The comparative analysis of numerical data and experimental results is performed. The results of the study can be used both for developing recommendations and engineering methods for calculating similar shell buildings and for determining the actual operational scheme for units and elements of the considered structure.

The calculation of optimal parameters of flat-oval pipes is given by an approximate method, the correctness of which is confirmed by testing using standardized profiles. A new layout of gratings made of flat-oval shaped pipes is presented, developed for truss systems based on steel rod structures of coatings with replacement of bar-shaped bent elements with tubular ones. The caseless junctions of belts and lattices with direct joining of rod elements to each other without alignment are developed, as well as with structural eccentricities limited to 0.25 of the height of the waist elements, which allows not to take them into account in calculations and provides an increase in the degree of unification of the nodes of the upper and lower belts of carrier’s constructions. The prospects of using a new technical solution in light metal structures of buildings and structures are shown. The area of its rational application is outlined, where by means of variant design of typical, known and new solutions, a quantitative estimate of the reduction in the consumption of structural material is given. The whole diagram of changes in the design parameters of flat-oval pipes is shown in the transformation of their cross-sections from vertical configurations to horizontal ones, including the transition through the outline of a circular shape.
