The paper presents operational problems present in fluid and gas flow measurement systems. Tests (involving laser welded tubes made using a focused and a defocused beam) were concerned with the quality of welded joints. The tests revealed that the use of the focused beam resulted in the formation of cracks in the welds. In addition, post-weld observations revealed undercuts on the weld face side, responsible for the thinning of the tubes, yet without compromising their service life.

In the age of digital transformation of production processes in industry and science the development and design of intelligent flow sensors for granular and liquid substances transferring through pipelines becomes more important. With this in view new approaches for improving the accuracy of microwave flowmeters are proposed. Taking into account the characteristics ofelectromagnetic waves propagating through a pipeline, a wave scattered by inhomogeneities of the controlled medium is analyzed. Features of the transformation of the polarized scattered wave limiting the geometric dimensions of the pipeline and optimizing the values of the useful scattered signal are revealed. Expediency of collection of the information signal with orthogonal polarization of the scattered wave and through a directional coupler is substantiated. The method of estimating the measurement accuracy with reference to the signal-to-noise ratio at the input of the processing device is given. The research results can be used in cryogenic machine engineering to measure volume and mass flows of liquid cryogenic products.

AbstractThe quality of wave measurements is of primary importance for the validation of wave forecasting models, satellite wave calibration and validation, wave physics, offshore operations and design and climate monitoring. Validation of global wave forecasts revealed significant regional differences, which were linked to the different wave buoy systems used by different countries. To fully understand the differences between the wave measurement systems, it is necessary to go beyond investigations of the integral wave parameters height, period and direction, into the frequency spectra and the four directional Fourier parameters that are used to estimate the directional distribution. We here analyse wave data measured from three different sensors (non-directional Datawell Waverider buoy, WaveRadar Rex, Optech laser) operating at the Ekofisk oil production platform located in the central North Sea over a period of several months, with significant wave height ranging from 1 to 10 m. In general, all three sensors provide similar measurements of the integral wave properties and frequency spectra, although there are some significant differences which could impact design and operations, forecast verification and climate monitoring. For example, the radar underestimates energy in frequency bands higher than 8 s by 3–5%, swell (12.5–16 s) by 5–13%, while the laser has 1–2% more energy than the Waverider in the most energetic bands. Lee effects of structures are also estimated. Lower energy at the frequency tail with the radar has an effect on wave periods (they are higher); wave steepness is seen to be reduced by 10% in the wind seas. Goda peakedness and the unidirectional Benjamin-Feir index are also examined for the three sensors.

Statistics of accidents and incidents on main gas pipelines in recent years indicate that almost half of the technogenic events occur due to depressurization in the area of annular welded joints, mainly joints containing defects made during construction and installation work during the construction of gas pipelines. The assessment of the degree of danger and the timing of external inspection and repair or replacement of defective annular welded joints largely depends on the quality of non-destructive testing, the correct identification of the types of defects and the objective determination of their geometric dimensions. To increase the reliability of the assessment of the degree of danger of the detected defects, it is necessary to use additional control methods, in particular, destructive ones. The paper presents the results of surveys and tests of metal fragments of annular welded joints of main gas pipelines containing transverse cracks of annular welded joints in order to determine the causes of the formation of these defects and to assess the degree of danger of the detected transverse cracks of the installation welds of main gas pipelines.

The article deals with one of the important tasks of modern flow measurement, which is related to the measurement of the flow rate and the amount of wet gas. This task becomes especially important when it becomes necessary to obtain information about the separate amount of the dry part of the gas that is contained in the form of a mixture in the wet gas stream. The paper presents the principle of operation and structure of the invariant system for measuring the flow rate of wet gas, which is based on the combined use of differential pressure flowmeters and Coriolis flowmeters. The operation of the invariant wet gas flow rate measurement system is based on the simultaneous application of the multichannel principle and the partial flow measurement method. Coriolis flowmeters and the differential pressure flowmeter are used as the main elements of the system. The proposed measurement system does not offer applications for gases with abundant drip humidity. The article provides information about the test results of the proposed invariant system. The estimation of the metrological characteristics of the invariant system when measuring the flow rate of wet gas is given. The obtained test results of the invariant wet gas flow rate measurement system are relevant for natural gas production, transportation, and storage facilities.

The reliability of ultrasonic testing (UT) of the quality of welded joints of polyethylene pipelines, made end-to-end with a heated tool, is considered in comparison with mechanical tests and radiography. The greatest detection of solid defects is provided by ultrasonic inspection with the use of chord tipe probes (not less than 90 %). When detecting defects translucent for ultrasound (lack of penetration, lack of fusion, etc.), the reliability decreases to 70÷80 %. Keywords: welding, polyethylene pipeline, quality control, ultrasonic testing, chord tipe probe. [email protected]

Cathodic protection is a very well-known method of preventing or stopping reinforcement corrosion and thereby extending the service life of reinforced concrete civil structures. However, a number of factors, which among others are design, materials and components, installation methods, quality of workmanship, and operation and maintenance of the cathodic protection system, have influence on the functionality and effectivity of the cathodic protection system. The optimum design that fulfils the Client''s requirements to cost, traffic disruption, service life, etc. shall be determined in accordance with the structure layout and the ability of the Client''s organisation to conduct operation and maintenance. It is critical to ensure that all components are installed properly to achieve the expected service life of the system. Regular and correct operation and maintenance is also crucial to ensure the functionality and effectivity system.
