Objective: Hyperuricemia is a metabolic problem that has become increasingly common worldwide over the past several decades. Its prevalence is increased in both advanced and developing countries including Yemen. The aim of this cross sectional study was to investigate the prevalence of hyperuricemia in sample of Yemeni adult individual and its relationship to certain cardiovascular risk factors namely obesity, hypertension, serum glucose, total cholesterol, high serum triglyceride, Low High Density Lipoprotein (HDL-C) and high Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL-C). Methodology: A sample of 600 adult Yemeni people aged equal or over 18 years was randomly chosen to represent the population living in Sanaa City during a period of two years from April 2017 to August 2018. All the study groups undergo full clinical history and examination includes measurement of BP and BMI, WC and the following laboratory investigation (FBS, Basal serum uric acid level, total cholesterol, serum TG, HDL and LDL). Results: The prevalence of hyperuricemia in this study was 8.8% (11,6% male and 6.4% female). The serum uric acid level in this study was significantly correlated with age, Waist Circumference (WC), SBP, DBP, FBS, T-cholesterol, TG and LDL but not with HDL. Conclusion: There is strong relationship between serum uric acid level and other cardiovascular risk factors.

Background and Aim: Morbidity and mortality from non-communicable diseases, particularly diabetes are increasing rapidly in Pakistan, the prevalence has reached 17.1%. A strong association has been witnessed between type II diabetes mellitus with atherosclerosis and serum uric acid level. The current study aim was to assess the levels of serum uric acid in type II diabetes mellitus. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out on 85 diagnosed patients of type II diabetes mellitus in Diabetes hospital, Peshawar and the Department of General Medicine, Shaikh Zayed Medical Complex, Lahore during the period from March 2020 to August 2020.Type II diabetes mellitus (DM) diagnosed patients 85 and healthy control 30 were evaluated in this study. The level of hyperuricemia was defined for women > 6 mg/dl and men >7 mg/dl in men. Results: In this study, a total of 85 diabetic diagnosed patients and 30 healthy controls were enrolled. No significant differences were there in the baseline characteristics like anthropometric and socio-demographic parameters. The mean age for diagnosed and control cases was 58.6±8.7 and 56.5±7.6 years with an age range of 40 and 80 years. Hyperuricemia proportion among diabetic patients was 12.13% while none of the control cases had hyperuricemia. The uric acid means level increased from 4.29±0.81 mg/dl with a diabetic duration between 3 and 4 years to 4.59±0.99 mg/dl with a diabetic duration of 5 to 7 years. Furthermore, mean serum uric acid level reached 6.50±1.08 in cases with diabetic duration 8 to 12 years. Statistically, a significant association was found between diabetic duration and serum uric acid. Also, a positive correlation was found in hyperlipidemia, serum uric acid levels, and hypertension. Conclusion: In diabetic patients serum uric acid levels were found to be significantly higher. Diabetic patients had hypertension, elevated serum uric acid levels, and high triglycerides with dyslipidemia. The rise in serum uric acid levels is proportional to the duration of diabetes. Abstract Background: To clarify the risk factors associated with NAFLD and further clarify the correlation between uric acid level and NAFLD by analyzing the correlation between NAFLD and different metabolic factors.Methods: Datas were obtained from subjects who underwent health examination in the Health promotion centre of Sir Run Run Shaw hospital of Zhejiang University from January 2016 to December 2017.The diagnosis of NAFLD was according to the clinical diagnosis of the Guidelines.Statistical analyses were performed using R software.Results: 79492 subjects were analyzed. 56680(71.3%) participants did not have NAFLD, 22812(28.7%) participants had NAFLD. Male, age, BMI, high blood pressure, central obesity, high glycosylated hemoglobin, high serum uric acid, high triglyceride, high total cholesterol, high low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), abnormal liver function were risk factors of NAFLD, however, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) level was another risk factor of NAFLD.OR value suggested serum uric acid was a robust risk factor for NAFLD in all subgroups.In male group, AUC was 0.656 (95%CI: 0.651-0.661), the optimal diagnostic threshold was 395.5 mol/L, the sensitivity was 61.9%, the specificity was 61.1%, and the yoden index was 0.23. In female group, AUC was 0.716 (95%CI: 0.708-0.724), the optimal diagnostic threshold was 294.5 mol/L, sensitivity was 67.7%, specificity was 64.5%, and the Jordan index was 0.32.Conclusions: Our study suggested that there was a close correlation between serum uric acid level and NAFLD.Uric acid levels was a key risk factor for NAFLD.The diagnosis of fatty liver in patients can be preliminarily determined by detecting uric acid level.Contributions to the literature:1. Background: Diabetes mellitus is the most important risk factor associated with two to four fold increased incidence of coronary artery disease. The major risk factors for CAD are hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and cigarette smoking Objectives: To study the level of serum uric acid in type 2 diabetes mellitus and the correlation between elevated serum uric acid level and the component of metabolic syndrome like obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia.Methods: The study was done as descriptive analytical study among the diabetic patients in a tertiary care setting during the period January 2018 to February 2019. The inclusion and exclusion criteria were clearly defined and the study participants were recruited for the study after getting the informed consent. The socio demographic profile, clinical and laboratory data were collected from the blood sample obtained from the patients with the standardized procedures. Data was entered in Microsoft excel spread sheet and analyzed statistically using SPSS statistical software. Student ‘t’ test and Chi-square test values were applied for significance.Results: Serum uric acid in the study population and control varied from 3.0 to 8.1 and 2.7 to 5.5 mg/dl respectively. The mean and standard deviation of uric acid among cases was 5.08±1.42 while in control it was 3.55±0.62 respectively. The serum uric acid level of diabetics was very much elevated compare with controls and it was highly significant. Significant correlation was noticed between serum uric acid and BMI as well as WHR. Elevated uric acid levels were significantly noticed among those with hypertension, dyslipidemia, coronary artery disease and chronicity of the diabetes.Conclusions: Uric acid was significantly elevated in diabetic population and the mean value of serum uric acid level was higher in longer duration of diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, central obesity which are the components of metabolic syndrome.

BACKGROUND:Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. AIM:To evaluate the serum uric acid level in patients with type 2 Diabetes mellitus. MATERIALS AND METHODS:It was a prospective observational study conducted on 100 patients attending Medicine Department of Jhalawar Medical College, Jhalawar, Rajasthan. The study was done to assess the uric acid status in patients with diabetes mellitus and to find out its association with Age, Gender, Body Mass Index (BMI), Waist Hip Ratio (WHR), Dyslipidemia and Hypertension. Relevant history, vitals, clinical examination and laboratory investigations were done and recorded. RESULTS:This study evaluated the level of serum uric acid in Type 2 diabetes mellitus patients and confirmed there significantly high prevalence of hyperuricemia among type 2 diabetes subjects and increased association with increasing age, BMI, WHR, Dyslipidemia, Hypertension and female sex. CONCLUSION: Patients with Poor metabolic control and longer duration of diabetes were more susceptible to develop various complications including hyperuricemia. Early diagnosis and control of Diabetes Mellitus and its complications is indicated and potential therapeutic approaches (therapeutic life style changes and pharmacotherapy) should be initiated.

Objectives : Our study was to detect the correlation of serum uric acid level with glycaemic status and with lipid prole. And also evaluate the various biochemical parameters, anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, serum uric acid level and associated factors. Methods: A 100 subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus as a case and 100 subjects with non diabetics as control with age group greater than 40 years were enrolled in this study. A detail history, dietary pattern, clinical examination and relevant investigation were performed. Anthropometric examination like as measurement of BMI, measurement of waist-hip ratio and biochemical investigations like as blood glucose, serum HbA1c estimation, serum uric acid and serum lipid prole were performed to all subjects. Results : Data was analyzed by using SPSS software. Mean±SD was observed. P value was taken ≤0.05 for signicant differences. Conclusion : Type 2 diabetes mellitus patients is a strong negative correlation between blood glucose level and serum uric acid level. So that serum uric acid can be used as an important parameter to assess future cardiovascular risk in a type 2 diabetes mellitus patient.

Studies in past few years have linked oxidative stress as a potential marker of diabetes mellitus. Thus, based on the previous literature this study was planned with the aim to evaluate serum GGT activity and serum uric acid level as potential indicators of oxidative stress in type-2 diabetes mellitus patients. A total of 68 participants were included following inclusion and exclusion criteria. After the statistical analysis, statistically significant differences were observed in the mean GGT activity between controls (30.19±7.639IU/L) and cases (59.386±22.215IU/L) (p=0.000). Similarly, mean serum uric acid level of controls (5.180±1.476mg/dl) and cases (3.510±0.792mg/dl) (p=0.000), were also statistically difference. Further, after applying Pearson’s correlation, positive correlation between GGT and HbA1C level (r=0.390) and with GGT and FPG level (r=0.375) were observed. However, correlation between HbA1c and uric acid (r=-0.372); FPG and uric acid (r=-0.374) level suggested serum uric acid concentration was inversely proportional to the degree of dysglycemia in diabetes mellitus patients of this study. Hence, results of this study suggested serum GGT activity and serum uric acid level were altered as compared to controls and cases. Thus, further study on these parameters may help to serve it as potential markers of oxidative stress in diabetes mellitus patients.
