Using mother tongue (L1) in a foreign language (L2) classrooms is inevitable. Despite the debate over the adequacy of using L1 in the teaching of L2, this paper argues using L1 in the classroom does not hinder learning, and that L1 has a facilitating role to play in the classroom and can help L2 learning and acquisition. This paper shows that L1 is an inseparable part of language teaching, and it has several functions for both the students and teachers in English language learning and teaching. Therefore, those who believe L1 has a minimal role to play in the teaching of a foreign language are invited to think again of its role and contributions it makes to the fields of language learning and teaching.

Vocabulary learning is one of the most important fields in teaching English or any foreign language. One could learn all of the grammatical rules and exceptions that the language contains, but what if our brain did not store the needful amount of words to complete and utter the message that a person want to transmit ? The present research work aimed at promoting the use of Total Physical Response (TPR) method, as a technique to introduce English language vocabulary to EFL beginners. An overall of 150 students and 26 EFL teachers were involved in this study. To achieve the objectives of the study, class observation was used as an instrument to gain insight into learners’ attitudes and reactions toward English language learning. Questionnaire was also used to collect reliable data. The results obtained revealed that teaching English vocabulary through Physical Response allows students to learn faster and easier, since children find support from the physical representation of their facilatator or their peers. Also the results may be a reference for other researchers who are interested in undertaking research on the learning or teaching of English vocabulary.

Taking a historical perspective, this article documents the development of domestically produced English Language Learning (ELL) materials in the period between 1945 and 2013. To this end, reference is made to milestones that marked shifts in linguistic and foreign language teaching paradigms, including aspects of Method and the underlying conception of language. The analysis will draw on aspects of Method in relation to language policy documents (i.e., curricula) and the course books in which these principles are embodied. Through the analysis of these factors we trace the evolution from Grammar–Translation methodology to Communicative Language Teaching in locally produced textbooks which are representative of various historical periods.

This article presents an empirical study carried out among the students of higher secondary schools to find out how English language learning occurs naturally in an environment where learners are encouraged by an appropriate method such as visual learning. The primary data was collected from 504 students with different pretested questionnaires. A selection of a series of variables is taken into consideration in the survey, which is measured and information of each one is collected to describe what is researched. The results indicate that visual learning is an essential part of the overall experience that the learners gain towards their process of language learning. Also, it constitutes a vital process of ‘Input and Interaction’ for the learner ensuring that his needs, necessities and aspirations are taken into account and by making him involved, produce genuine learning.
