The first part of this study consisted of a qualitative literature review to determine which variables other than strategic enrolment management might affect the competence of B.Ed. graduates. It was found that other factors might include teacher archetype, motivation to become a teacher, career planning and professional identity. This study presented the constructed operational definitions of each of the variables and the proposed structural relationships between them. In the second part, a quantitative approach was used and data were collected through a questionnaire. It is recommended that additional qualitative research is conducted to complement the findings of this study. Keywords: strategic enrolment management, teacher education, student teacher, teacher archetype, teacher competence

Hovedfunnene er at lærerstudentene ikke uten videre klarer å omsette kunnskap mellom de to læringsarenaene, at de i stor grad ser relasjonskompetanse som viktigere enn fagkompetanse, at disse to kompetanseområdene er uavhengige av hverandre og at praksisarenaen er viktigere enn teoriarenaen som grunnlag for å tre inn i lærerrollen.Nøkkelord: lærerutdanning, lærerstudent, lærerkompetanse, lærerrolle, fagkunnskap, læringsarenaer, norskfagetAbstractDuring the last few decades, research, public debate and policymaking related to the school sector, have been characterized by discussions concerning what being a competent teacher involves. Another issue has been how the two learning arenas in teacher education – the theory arena and the practice arena – can best complement each other to educate competent teachers. In this article we present and discuss results from an investigation conducted among teacher students in teacher education 1-7 at one particular educational institution. We have focused on getting across the students´ experiences and understanding of what the teacher role comprises, and how they see the connections between the two learning arenas as campus training and practice training in partner schools in the school subject Norwegian. This is done using a survey and group interviews. Our goal has been to contribute to the ongoing discussion about how to develop a teacher education in which teacher students and teacher educators (in both learning arenas) share an understanding of mutual tolerance and respect. Another has been to develop a common understanding of the complexity of teacher education, and thereby recognizing the equivalence of the students` two learning arenas. Our main findings are that the respondents are not automatically able to transfer knowledge between the two arenas. Consider relational competence more important than subject competence, that these two competence areas are seen as independent of each other, and that the practice arena is considered as more important than the theory arena for developing the role of the teacher.Key words: teacher education, student teacher, teacher competence, teacher role, subject knowledge, learning arenas, the subject Norwegian

A Review of: Walter, Scott. “Librarians as Teachers: A Qualitative Inquiry into Professional Identity.” College and Research Libraries 69.1 (2008): 51-71. Objective – This study explores how academic librarians are introduced to teaching, the degree to which they think of themselves as teachers, the ways in which being a teacher has become a significant feature of their professional identity, and the factors that may influence academic librarians to adopt a “teacher identity.” Design – A literature review extended by qualitative semi-structured interviews. Setting – The research took place at an American university with the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching designation of “Doctoral/Research — Extensive.” Subjects – Six academic librarians. Methods – The main feature of the article is an extensive literature review around the themes of LIS, teaching, and qualitative research methodologies. The literature review is supplemented by qualitative research consisting of semi-structured interviews of between 45 and 90 minutes each, which were conducted during spring 2004 with six librarians (five women and one man), whose length of professional service ranged from 2 to 32 years. All of the participants worked at the same institution. The data collected were reviewed throughout the process using field memos and a research log. The data were analyzed using a coding process where discrete ideas that emerged from the data were used to identify a small number of themes. The initial conclusions in the study were validated through member checking during the writing phase. “Member checking involves sharing draft study findings with the participants, to inquire whether their viewpoints were faithfully interpreted, whether there are gross errors of fact, and whether the account makes sense to participants with different perspectives” (Centre for Health Evidence). Main Results – Five themes around teaching and teacher identity as they pertain to academic librarians emerged from the data. The first theme was the centrality of teaching. Each participant sought out a position where the teaching role was valued. The role of teacher spilled over into the other roles of the librarian, i.e., reference service, collection development, etc. The next theme was the importance of collegial and administrative support, which is critical to the ability to focus on work as a teacher. The stress of multiple demands emerged as a theme, as time dedicated to teaching was often at the expense of something else. Another theme was the problems with professional education around teaching. Instruction course offerings in library schools were reported to be meagre, and some were badly planned and executed. The fifth theme involved stereotypes and misperceptions. Studies have shown that the academic library profession has been poorly understood by students and faculty. Study participants believed that many of their campus colleagues were either unaware of what they did, or were misinformed by popular culture stereotypes of librarians. Conclusions – The small sample size precluded the making of any definite conclusions based on the study results. Other limitations of the study include the relatively short amount of time spent in the interview process and the narrow range of librarians chosen to participate. The author notes that a subject pool more representative of academic librarians’ full range of opinions regarding the importance of teaching as a professional responsibility would have resulted in more complex themes emerging. While the author is aware of the study’s limitations, he feels there is value in the qualitative research design, in giving voice to individual librarians, and in the provision of insight into some of the research questions found in the literature of learning to teach and of teacher identity. Given the limitations, Walter makes three conclusions about his findings. He points out the lack of a formal introduction to teaching in many library programs which has been explored by other studies and concludes that his study “suggests that continuing lack of attention to this issue results in a difficult introduction into the profession for new academic librarians” (64). Regarding continuing and professional education, Walter concludes that “this study suggests that there are a number of important questions about the content and conduct of these opportunities for instruction librarians that have not been explored in the literature” (64). Finally, Walter concludes that “this study suggests that there is an important connection between research on student perceptions of academic librarians, the study of teacher identity, and the future of the profession” (64).

Teaching is a challenging job, due to the changing requirements of changing times. Routine as a teacher is not possible. Student teachers need to be prepared to deal with challenging situations. The perception of requirements as challenges and problem-solving capacities are needed to master the job as a teacher. This article explains why problem-solving capacities are essential for teacher professionalization, what requirements challenge beginning teachers most, and how teacher education can foster student teachers to be prepared to deal with challenges of the first stage of their career. Based on the model of professionalization in which individual resources play a crucial role in the perception of challenge and the coping with it, results from a study on the challenges of beginning teachers were shown. The main finding that beginning teachers are most challenged by teaching that refers to individual students’ needs leads to consequences for teacher education. Student teachers need to build up adaptive knowledge for school and reflection competences. Explanations on a course at Zurich University of Teacher Education show how student teachers are educated in a problem-based setting to build up knowledge and competence that are useful in order to teach considering individual students’ needs. The article closes with a model of reflection on challenging situations that takes into account different factors of individual resources that are relevant for professionalization. Traditional education has ripple effects in education. The way the educator was taught is almost always the way the educator teaches the learners. Traditional education has a narration sickness (Freire, 2000) and the so-called educators are proselytising ideologues who are after the production of copy cats. Active learning in teacher education is anchored in reflective thinking on all practices. The teacher education student should be encouraged to embark on action research which makes one to be introspective. Thus action research makes the teacher involved in active life-long learning. The teacher who has been groomed in action research abhors routine and ritualistic methods of teaching. The action research oriented teacher makes learners active in learning episodes.

The project addresses a worldwide call for meeting places for the triadic collaboration in teacher education. The meeting place is an asynchronous LMS-based discussion forum where second year student teachers write and receive daily response from fellow student teachers, mentors and professors in Norwegian (Mother Tongue) and in Pedagogy and Pupil-related Skills during field practice. The study presented in this article is based on a qualitative analysis of written log discussions and interviews from the second year of the project. The study shows that the student teachers have a subject-oriented focus in their writing. It also shows that it is possible to establish an arena for interplay. The written dialog in the digital room turned out to be a driving force regarding theoretical studies and the development of a professional language. At the same time, the mentor’s experience based knowledge is highlighted and put into dialog with the theory based knowledge. In the discussion, the characteristics of the triad’s dialog are interpreted in the light of theory on learning as a double process, focusing both on the particular situation and contextualizing the situation. The findings are discussed in the light of previous research on the lack of a sufficient professional language and lack of orientation towards established knowledge amongst student teachers and teachers. Keywords: teacher education, student teachers, the digital room, arena for interplay, professional language

In schools, classroom talk is often dominated by teachers´ lecturing or asking closed questions followed by teachers’ evaluative feedback. When the teacher presents ideas to students or uses the question-response feedback, the talk is considered as authoritative talk. On the other side, during dialogic talk, the teacher reacts to students´ views and responses. The important role of the teachers in promoting dialogic classroom talk has been demonstrated in many previous studies. However, little is known about how student teachers use different talk forms, especially in inquiry-based biology lessons which is the focus of this research. The primary school student teachers’ lessons – a total of 14 lessons of five student teachers – were videotaped and audiotaped. The data were analysed using theory-based content analysis. The results show that the primary school student teachers used more authoritative classroom talk than dialogical classroom talk in their inquiry-based lessons. Mainly, non-interactive authoritative talk form was used by all student teachers, and interactive dialogic talk form was used least. Authoritative talk was used in all stages of the inquiry-based lesson. Dialogic talk was used more during introduction and examination stages. The findings suggest that in teacher education, student teachers need scaffold in talking with pupils when carrying out inquiry-based teaching. Key words: authoritative talk, dialogic talk, inquiry-based lesson, primary school, teacher education.

This article aims to illustrate a 7-month trial of digital book subscription services in teacher education. Student teachers of the University of Turku in Finland were encouraged to implement the service as part of their free time reading. The experiences of the digital subscription service were investigated using a questionnaire, and data were analyzed through a combination of qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis. The aim of the study was to consider the value of digital book subscription services in terms of reading for pleasure and to describe the readership of teacher students as well as their assessment of digital book subscription services as a pedagogical approach for supporting the reading of primary school students. The results indicated that digital book subscription services might enhance the readership of occasional readers and that audiobook services should be implemented more frequently in education since they seem to connect reading to other free time activities. More effort should be placed in supporting the readership of teacher students in teacher education. Currently, the attitude and amount of reading rely primarily on childhood experiences.
