A Comprehensive Algorithm for Detection, Identification of Naval Surface Forces and Target Allocation of Network-Centric Controlled Weapons

The purpose of the study was to examine and solve the problem of detecting and identifying the objects of naval surface forces by a group of controlled weapons within the group using coordinates and the type of such objects. The main target of naval surface forces was determined according to the parameters of the frequency of detection of the objects by the group of controlled weapons and the reliability of identification of the objects of naval surface forces. A matrix for detecting the objects of naval surface forces by the group of controlled weapons has been formed and analyzed. The introduction of restrictions on the tactics of actions of the group of controlled weapons and on the coefficient of convolution of criteria in the task of target allocation makes it possible to ensure almost complete absence of intersections of trajectories of controlled weapons. On the basis of statistical modeling of the configuration of the systems and the corresponding probabilities of detection and identification, the effectiveness of the developed algorithm is shown. An example of a multi-stage calculation of one variant from a statistical series of experiments is given, followed by a preliminary assessment of target allocation by the group of controlled weapons in accordance with the current configurations of the group of weapons and naval surface forces. The multivariate analysis of the efficiency of the algorithm operation on various configurations of the systems showed a high degree of identification of the objects of naval surface forces in comparison with the existing algorithms. A range of values for the probabilities of identifying the types of the objects of naval surface forces by the group of controlled weapons has been identified, which provides an almost unambiguous determination of the main target of naval surface forces

AbstractThis paper presents an effective method for the detection of a fingerprint’s reference point by analyzing fingerprint ridges’ curvatures. The proposed approach is a multi-stage system. The first step extracts the fingerprint ridges from an image and transforms them into chains of discrete points. In the second step, the obtained chains of points are processed by a dedicated algorithm to detect corners and other points of highest curvature on their planar surface. In a series of experiments we demonstrate that the proposed method based on this algorithm allows effective determination of fingerprint reference points. Furthermore, the proposed method is relatively simple and achieves better results when compared with the approaches known from the literature. The reference point detection experiments were conducted using publicly available fingerprint databases FVC2000, FVC2002, FVC2004 and NIST

An ultimate design goal for an improved electron microscope, aimed at biological applications, is the determination of the structure of complex bio-molecules. As a prototype of this class of problems, we propose to examine the possibility of reading DNA sequence by an imaginable instrument design. This problem ideally combines absolute importance and relative simplicity, in as much as the problem of enzyme structure seems to be a much more difficult one.The proposed technique involves the deposition on a thin graphite lamina of intact double helical DNA rods. If the structure can be maintained under vacuum conditions, we can then make use of the high degree of order to greatly reduce the work involved in discriminating between the four possible purine-pyrimidine arrangements in each base plane. The phosphorus atoms of the back bone form in projection (the helical axis being necessarily parallel to the substrate surface) two intertwined sinusoids. If these phosphorus atoms have been located up to a certain point on the molecule, we have available excellent information on the orientation of the base plane at that point, and can then locate in projection the key atoms for discrimination of the four alternatives.

SummaryRats were subjected to the following procedures: No treatment, Stressor (10% NaCl i.p.), Warfarin for 7 days, Stressor followed by Warfarin; and groups were sacrificed at intervals for assessment of spontaneous hemorrhage and of adrenal ascorbic acid concentration. There was no hemorrhage in the no treatment and stressor groups; some hemorrhage in the warfarin group; profound hemorrhage with Warfarin + Stressor. The adrenal ascorbic acid concentration was found to be lower, 8 h and again 5 days after stress, and remained lower in the warfarin + stress animals. Warfarin had no effect on adrenal ascorbic acid level.In another series of experiments in which the stress consisted of an electric current to the cage floor for 6 sec over 15 min, rats were sacrificed daily for determination of serum corticosterone concentration and occurrence of spontaneous hemorrhage. There was a statistically significant increase of serum corticosterone concentration with stress, warfarin and combined warfarin and stress treatments (P< 0.001 for all three variables). There was a significant correlation (r = 0.96 and 0.89, P< 0.01) for serum corticosterone concentration with hemorrhage score and incidence of hemorrhage in stressed rats receiving warfarin, but not in those receiving only warfarin. The results indicate an activation, rather than an exhaustion, of the pituitary-adrenal axis during the combined action of anticoagulant and stress, which results in the development of spontaneous hemorrhage.

In this study we aimed to determine the extent to which changes in the share of renewable energy sources, their structural complex, and the level of energy security in Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia (EECCA) countries in the medium- and long-term are interconnected. The study was performed through modeling and determination of the structural characteristics of energy security in the countries. The methodology of the approach to modeling was based on solving the problem of nonlinear optimization by selecting a certain scenario. For the study, the data of EECCA countries were used. The ability of EECCA countries to benefit from long-term indirect and induced advantages of the transformation period depends on the extent to which their domestic supply chains facilitate the deployment of energy transformation and induced economic activity. This study provides an opportunity to assess the degree of influence of renewable energy sources on the level of energy security of countries in the context of energy resource diversification. The high degree of influence of renewable energy sources on energy security in the EECCA countries has been proven in the implementation of the developed scenarios for its increase. Energy security is growing. At the same time, its level depends not only on an increase in the share of renewable sources but also on the structure of energy resources complex of countries, and the development of various renewable energy sources. Therefore, today the EECCA countries are forced not only to increase the share of renewable energy sources but also to attach strategic importance to the structural content of their energy complex.

Abstract Two methods for the determination of resistance to the outflow of cerebrospinal fluid, the bolus injection technique and the constant rate steady state infusion technique, were compared. Thirty-two patients with a variety of intracranial diseases (usually communicating hydrocephalus) were studied. There was a high degree of correlation between the resistance values obtained with the two methods, but values based on the bolus injection technique were systematically and statistically significantly lower than those obtained with the constant rate infusion test. From a practical point of view. both methods were found to be applicable in a clinical setting.


Amongst the Fellows elected to the Royal Society in 1941 were W. T. Astbury for his studies using X-ray analysis to study the structures of natural fibres, and amongst the Foreign Members elected that year was Ross G. Harrison for his contributions to embryology. Astbury and Harrison were very different in temperament, and worked in very different fields on either side of the Atlantic, yet they were united in their approach to the study of biological phenomena. Both Astbury and Harrison believed that the organization and form of biological materials whether wool fibres or the limb-bud in an amphibian embryo depended on molecular structure and pattern. Moreover both were concerned with dynamic aspects of form; Astbury’s greatest achievement was to demonstrate the dynamic, reversible folding and stretching of proteins in the k-m-e-f group, and Harrison looked to changing molecular patterns to account for changing symmetries in the developing embryo. It was this common approach that brought them together and led to Harrison spending a brief month in Leeds where they and K. M. Rudall performed what have been described as ‘truly progressive experiments in molecular biology’. I believe this short series of experiments illuminates the character and work of both Harrison and Astbury and illustrates the difficulties, practical and conceptual, in carrying out ‘progressive experiments’. I shall begin by reviewing briefly the embryological background of the time before going on to discuss in detail the approaches of Harrison and Astbury to their work and the outcome of their collaboration.

The Meteorological Council, being desirous of discussing the photographic traces produced by their electrograph at the Kew Observatory some time since, requested the Kew Committee to institute a series of experiments, with the view of determining the scale value of the instrument, in order to prepare a suitable scale for measuring the curves. The Kew Committee, at their meeting in November, entrusted the matter to me, and accordingly, having obtained the loan of a battery of 300 Bunsen cells, some preliminary experiments were made, which showed that the greatest potential which could be obtained with them was very inadequate for the purpose.

With increasing interest in the burning of coal in industrial gas turbines, there is also concern for the precise determination of the erosive effects on the turbine components. Series of experiments were conducted to determine the effects of fly ash constituents, particle size, particle velocity, angle of attack and target temperature on the erosion of iron and nickel base alloys. Based on the experimental results, a semi-empirical equation has been obtained for the prediction of the erosion losses. This equation provides a new technique for predicting the metal erosion due to the fly ash produced by the conventional burning of coal.

In a recent paper I gave an account of a series of experiments having for their object the determination of the lines which were enhanced in the spectra of iron, magnesium, and calcium, on passing from the arc to a high temperature spark, and I pointed out the presence of these lines in the spectra of the hotter stars and in the solar chromosphere. The spectra of the following additional elements have since been investigated in a similar manner, and the enhanced lines have been tabulated and compared with chromospheric and stellar spectra.
