Response of Improved Production Technologies (IPT) on productivity and economics of black gram (Vigna mungo l.) in Nichabanadhi sub-basin of Tamil Nadu

One hundred and twenty eight (128) on-farm demonstrations on Improved Production Technology (IPT) for black gram were carried out in eighty (80) hectares of farmer’s fields in Sankarankovil, Vasudevanallur and Kuruvikulam blocks of Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu from 2010-11 to 2012-13 under Tamil Nadu – Irrigated Agriculture Modernization and Water Bodies Restoration and Management (TN-IAMWARM) project. Two methods viz., Improved Production Technologies (IPT) and Conventional Method (CM) were compared. The results revealed that the adoption of Improved Production Technologies IPT) favorably influenced yield attributes and yield of black gram. The maximum seed yield (1,053 kg ha-1) obtained from IPT which was higher than conventional method (720 kg ha-1). The best net income ( 25,650) and benefit:cost (2.60) were also associated with IPT than conventional method of black gram cultivation. The additional income of 11,762 ha-1 was obtained from IPT over Conventional Method of black gram cultivation.

Farming systems play a key role in maintaining the sustainability, productivity as well as provide better income in the farming community. The present study was carried out in Sankarankovil, Vasudevanallur and Kuruvikulam blocks of Tirunelveli district during 2007-08 to 2010-11 under Tamil Nadu – Irrigated Agriculture Modernization and Water Bodies Restoration and Management (TN-IAMWARM). These blocks are come under Nichabanadhi sub basin. The field demonstrations were carried out in 875 ha in these three blocks for various crop components <italic>viz</italic>, paddy, maize, sunflower, cotton, sugarcane and pulses. A total of 569 farmers were selected for field demonstration in improved production technologies (IPT) and conventional method (CM) for various crops viz., paddy, sugarcane, maize, sunflower, cotton and pulses. The results revealed that performance of all crops was better in IPT than CM. The average productivity and income of different crops were significantly higher under IPT as compared to CM. The IPT also gave higher net return and benefit:cost ratio to the farmers as compared to traditional farming. The overall result revealed that the improved production technology with different crops is an adoptable good approach for sustainable production and income generation of the farmers of Tamil Nadu.

The World Bank Supported TN IAM (Irrigated Agriculture Modernization) Project is a follow up of IAMWARM presently it was called as (Irrigated Agriculture Modernization and Water-Bodies Restoration and Management) Project which has made significant development and impacts in the Tamil Nadu state by modernizing irrigation infrastructure, improving water use efficiency, enhancing yield and productivity of agriculture in a climate resilient production systems, diversification towards high-value crops, strengthening the institutional reforms through Participatory Irrigation Management (PIM) and Water Users Association (WUA). Madurai District of Tamil Nadu was purposively selected for this study because Tamil Nadu Irrigated Agriculture Modernization Project was conducted under Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.  The foremost objective of the study is to assess the knowledge level of respondents in the study area. According to crop production technology aspects revealed that (79.00%) of the beneficiaries possessed knowledge in using VBN 6 variety for cultivation. The study concluded that majority (80.00%) of the beneficiaries were possessed knowledge on (cultural control) fixation of light traps, crop rotation (77.50%) and sowing carry out in proper season.

Four hundred and sixteen on-farm demonstrations on system of rice intensification (SRI) were carried out in 350 hectares of farmer’s fields in Sankarankovil, Vasudevanallur and Kuruvikulam blocks of Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu from 2008-09 to 2010-11 under Tamil Nadu – Irrigated Agriculture Modernization and Water Bodies Restoration and Management (TN-IAMWARM) project. Two methods viz., SRI and conventional were compared. The results revealed that the adoption of SRI favorable influenced yield attributes and yield of rice. The maximum grain yield (8222 kg ha-1) obtained from SRI which was higher than conventional method (6534 kg ha-1). Higher grain yield coupled with substantial water saving to the tune of 37.1 per cent resulted in higher water use efficiency of rice under SRI method. The best net income ( Rs. 50, 587) and benefit: cost ratio (3.64) were also associated with SRI than conventional method of rice cultivation. The cost of cultivation was comparatively lesser in SRI which re-sulted in gaining an additional income of Rs. 8080 ha-1 as compared to conventional method of rice cultivation. The system of rice intensification (SRI) proved its benefits in this basin.

Background: Black gram (Vigna mungo. L) is one of the most cultivated legume pulse crop with high nutritive value and Malabar neem (Melia dubia) is an emerging industrial agroforestry tree in Southern India. To maximize the land utilization with a field experiment was conducted at Western zone of Tamil Nadu to investigate the performance of black gram varieties under different spatial arrangements of Melia dubia plantations. Methods: An agroforestry trial was laid out in randomized block design (RBD) with eight treatments and three replications during kharif and rabi (2019-20) season. Black gram crop varieties (V1 - CO6 and V2 - VBN 6) were intercropped with M. dubia (1.5 year old plantation) with three different spacing of S1 (3 x 1.5 m), S2 (3 x 3 m) and S3 (4 x 4 m) while S0 as open field (Sole crop of black gram) for both the season. Result: The results of pooled analysis of two season shown that, treatment S0V2 recorded plant height (49.96 cm), number of branches (3.76), number of leaves (259.75), number of flowers (53.44), number of pods (22.85), seed yield per plant (5.38 g) and seed yield per hectare (0.82 tonnes) in open condition. Similarly in intercropping the growth and yield attributes of black gram were minimum performance recorded in CO 6 at closer spacing (3 x 1.5 m). In tree growth maximum pooled height increment (1.57 m) was observed in closer spacing (3 x 1.5 m) and maximum diameter recorded in wider spacing of both varieties. Hence wider spacing of S3 (4 x 4 m) can be suggested for intercropping under M. dubia plantations upto 4 years.

The IAM Project will bring the policy and institutional development achieved under IAMWARM project to a new level and will serve as the key vehicle for implementing the Tamil Nadu Government agenda in further enhancing water and agriculture productivity in a sub basin framework. Madurai District of Tamil Nadu was purposively selected for this study because Tamil Nadu Irrigated Agriculture Modernization Project was conducted under Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. The foremost objective of the study was to assess the adoption level of respondents in study area. Majority of the TN-IAMP beneficiaries (81.70% had medium level of adoption followed by nearly less than one-sixth of the total beneficiaries (15.80%) possess low adoption and only 2.5% of the beneficiaries had high level of adoption rate in this study.

Paddy is major predominant crop during Kharif in Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh, cultivated in an area of 112353 ha, out of total cropped area of 117608 ha with productivity of 2524 kg/ ha. Farmers grow crop by adopting traditional method of paddy cultivation, use more seed rate, close spacing, late transplanting with over aged seedlings common phenomenon due to erotic rainfall climate change. Scarcity of labour and escalation in labour wages, reduction in labour efficiency are leading to low net returns. In this context DAATT Centre, Vizianagaram district of ANGRAU, in collaboration with Department of Agriculture, Vizianagaram has introduced “Mechanized System Rice Intensification (MSRI). Mechanized system rice intensification (MSRI) is boon to farmers to save money and time. DAATT Centre, Vizianagaram has organized on farm trials (OFTs) in farmer fields in two seasons Kharif, 2015 and Kharif, 2016. MSRI technology in paddy recorded 20.76 per cent yield over normal transplanting method of paddy cultivation during both Kharif seasons. The results from the study showed that the farmers realized the Rs.15038 additional net income due to increased grain yield by 20.76 per cent with reduction of cost of cultivation by Rs.1150, it could be attributed to reduction in manual labour of 3 man labour and 21 women labour per ha and also increase in yield attributes and yield.

A field experiment was conducted assess the influences of biostimuants on the yield of bush bean cv. Co (Gb) 14 at Poothurai village, Tamil Nadu during kharif season of 2019 in randomized block design with nine treatments and three replications. Biostimulants adopted for the study were seaweed extract, panchagavya, chitosan and effective microorganism with two different concentrations applied as foliar spray on 30, 45 and 60 days after sowing.Results revealed that the maximum values of yield parameters viz., length of the raceme(51.2 cm), number of racemes plant-1(8.5), number of flowers raceme-1 (26.4), number of flowers (221.5), days to 50 % flowering (36.6 days), number of pods plant-1(41.6), pod length (10.6 cm), pod width (3.2 cm), single pod weight (4.6 g), number of seeds (5.2), total pod yield (12.6 t/ha), net income (Rs. 1,71,628 ha-1) and B:C ratio (3.14)were recorded under the treatment of seaweed extract (5mL-1) + RDF. The RDF + 3% panchagavya proved next best treatment in respect of these parameters. Among all the biostimulants, seaweed proved superior to others in respect of flowering and yield attributes. Field demonstrations were conducted in Rabi and Kharif season 2015-16 and 2016-17 at Rajapur, Muradnagar and Loni block of Ghaziabad district U.P. Under NFSM programme to evaluate the pulse yield of different variety peagon pea, black geam and masoor. It was found that the pusa 991 variety of Peagon pea gave highest yield among the three varieties i.e. Pusa 991, Pusa 992 and Upas 120 (farmer practice). The average yield of Pusa 991 was found 15.025 q/ha which was 9.76percentage more as compared to farmers practice, net profit was found 103240 /ha. Where as Pant Urd 31 gave highest average yield 14.20 q/ha and it was 13.24percentage more as compared to farmers practice (PDU-1) and net profit was recorded as 71000 /ha. Similarly the yield obtained of Pusa masoor 5 was 14.91 q/ha which was 28.91percentage more as compared to L 4147 (Farmer Practice) and net income received 69778/ha.Similarly conducted experiment on effect of zinc sulphate on pulse crops, it was found the same effect on all crop and varieties. The additional income were obtained 6000-8000 /ha from peagon pea 4000-6000 /ha from black gram 3600-5580 /ha from Masoor crop.

Background: Summer mung proved to be an effective crop in improving soil health, providing additional income to the farmers, works as catch crop and fits in paddy-wheat crop rotation in Northern India. Its cultivation leads to increase in house hold income of the farmers and contributed to nutritional security in rural India. The present study was carried out by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Sonepat in its adopted villages. Methods: A total number of 159 front line demonstrations (FLDs) were conducted on summer mung in 75.2 hectare area using improved variety MH-421 during summer 2017 and 2018 after harvesting of wheat and prior to paddy transplanting to show case improved production technologies on farmers’ field specifically under paddy-wheat rotation. The production, productivity and economic returns of summer mung in demonstrations and farmers’ practice were compared and different yield gaps were analyzed. Result: Average yield of demonstration plots was recorded significantly higher by 20.0 per cent and 21.3 per cent in summer 2017 and 2018, respectively. The extension gap was 1.75 q/ha and 1.90 q/ha while technology gap was 1.5 q/ha and 1.2 q/ha in 2017 and 2018, respectively. The additional economic returns for farmers ranged from Rs. 2907/ha to Rs. 3200/ha as a results of these FLDs. Hence, adoption of improved summer mung cultivation practices contributed to better yield and higher economic returns under paddy-wheat rotation after harvesting of wheat crop.
