Older adults with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) and chronic depression constitute a growing population of individuals in need of quality nursing care management. Although the small amounts of research currently available focus on both middle-aged and older adults living with these chronic conditions, this article offers specific suggestions for the nursing care of older adults who have been diagnosed with HIV, have experienced the progression of HIV to AIDS, and who have lived with chronic depression prior to the onset of HIV/AIDS. Given the increasingly significant role that nurses play in the lives of older adults with chronic health conditions, this article aims to provide nurses with a number of interventions associated with 10 nursing diagnoses pertinent to the care of older adults with HIV/AIDS and chronic depression.

ABSTRACT Objective: to understand the ideological basis in the experiences of older adults diagnosed with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Methods: this qualitative study was conducted using the creative, sensitive method and French discourse analysis in a group meeting of five older adults monitored at a Counseling and Testing Center in a municipality of the Fortaleza metropolitan region, Ceará. The project was approved by the research ethics committee (No. 212.243 and CAAE 08453412.5.0000.5044). Results: the older adults’ accounts framed the discursive formation Resigned life, immobilized attitude!, characterized by four existential situations: controversial conceptions regarding physical violence in childhood; a business called AIDS; guilt and lack of response related to HIV infection; and faith-based support. Conclusion: although most of the situations raised by the older adults were painful, there was no attempt to react, only immobility and resignation, leading to an ideology of colonization.

Traditional healers contribute significantly to the level of health-care systems in Africa. They could play an important role in the prevention and care of patients with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) in the community. The traditional healing system deals with psychosocial stress associated with HIV/AIDS as well as herbal medications. Sometimes, herbal medicine causes serious life-threatening complications. Two case reports are presented in this article. The first is a 48-year-old woman with HIV who was made to drink a large volume of a herbal decoction to stimulate vomiting in the belief that cleansing the bowel would rid the system of the disease. The second is a 25-year-old young man who had a herbal enema, which resulted in gangrene of the large bowel. The case histories, mechanism of action and causes of death are discussed.

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are currently playing a significant role for human welfare in the field of clinical diagnosis as well as several biomedical applications. More and more research shows thatAuNPs-based technologies are becoming promising approaches in cancer research and AIDS treatment. In this paper, we have focused mainly on the exploitation of unique and characteristic properties ofAuNPs such as surface plasmon resonance (SPR), surface enhance Raman scattering (SERS), magnetic properties (MRI), and fluorescence behavior shown upon conjugation with biological and biocompatible ligands. These properties find wide prevalence in biodiagnostics like plasmon-based labeling and imaging, enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA), and electrochemical-based methods that can pave the way for developing novel techniques towards diagnosis and therapy of cancer and human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS).

Purpose: The most significant peer-reviewed articles pertaining to infectious diseases (ID) pharmacotherapy, as selected by panels of ID pharmacists, are summarized. Summary: Members of the Houston Infectious Diseases Network (HIDN) were asked to nominate peer-reviewed articles that they believed most contributed to the practice of ID pharmacotherapy in 2017, including the areas of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). A list of 33 articles related to general ID pharmacotherapy and 4 articles related to HIV/AIDS was compiled. A survey was distributed to members of the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists (SIDP) for the purpose of selecting 10 articles believed to have made the most significant impact on general ID pharmacotherapy and the single significant publication related to HIV/AIDS. Of 524 SIDP members who responded, 221 (42%) and 95 (18%) members voted for general pharmacotherapy- and HIV/AIDS-related articles, respectively. The highest ranked articles are summarized below. Conclusion: Remaining informed on the most significant ID-related publications is a challenge when considering the large number of ID-related articles published annually. This review of significant publications in 2017 may aid in that effort.
