This article investigates key indicators for optimising supply chain performance of light vehicle manufacturers in South Africa. The article is based on a survey conducted among light vehicle manufacturers in South Africa with origins in Asia and Europe. Semi-structured interview questionnaire was used based on purposive sampling technique and the data was analysed using SPSS. The findings revealed that quality, final product delivery reliability and cost were highly rated and the most important indicators for the South African automotive market. Innovation (radical and incremental changes) was the least important among the indicators sampled. The article further revealed that there is a perceived difference on the importance of supply chain indicators between manufacturers of Asian and European origins. Final product delivery reliability and order delivery lead time tended to be more important to European manufacturers compared to Asian manufacturers. The article attests to the fact that competitiveness in cost, quality and product offerings are paramount to automotive manufacturers in todays turbulent environment. It also reveals key competitive criteria used by European and Asian manufacturers based in South Africa. The article contributes to literature on SCM and reveals the way in which vehicle manufacturers in South Africa do business.

Locally manufactured vehicles are destined (partly) for the export market and thus, global competitiveness  is  important.  This  article  explores  the  challenges  facing  supply  chains  of locally manufactured vehicles in South Africa. The automotive industry is perceived to be the most advanced in supply chain management practices in South Africa. It has embraced technology and management practices that have transformed the manufacturing environment by using cutting-edge design and visualisation tools. However, the industry has fragilities and faces new and emerging supply chain challenges. A survey research design was employed and  the  data  was  collected  through  face-to-face  semi-structured  interview  questionnaires based on the purposive sampling technique. Data analysis and interpretation was based on descriptive  statistics  using  SPSS  software.  The  findings  revealed  that  there  are  challenges hindering  best  supply  chain  practices  of  local  vehicle  manufacturers.  The  research  also revealed that there is a perceived difference in supply chain challenges between the different manufacturers of different origins in South Africa. Asian manufacturers felt much stronger about the adequacy of their information systems compared to the European manufacturers. Asian  manufacturers  tended  to  agree  more  than  their  European  counterparts  that  labour problems were a challenge. European manufacturers, on the other hand, tended to agree more that rail transport is unreliable. This article contributes to the body of knowledge on supply chain practices in South Africa.

The objective of this research is to examine the antecedents of supply chain value in the food trade business in the Gauteng region of South Africa. This study considers three of these drivers, namely buyer-supplier trust, commitment and supply chain relationship durability. A numerical approach was implemented in which a survey questionnaire was used to collect data from 429 managers and staff members from food retailing firms in the Gauteng province. The study used a non-probability convenience sampling technique to select respondents. Information were analysed through two software packages, namely the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS version 24.0) and the Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS version 24.0). The main goal of this research is to see if the data fits the model. A confirmatory factor analysis was applied in examining and testing the relationships between observed constructs and their causal latent constructs while structural equation modelling helped in testing the hypothesised relationships among variables. The results of the investigation made known that buyer and supplier trust, commitment and supply chain relationship endurance absolutely and meaningfully impact supply chain performance. This investigation concludes that to achieve greater supply chain performance, food retailers should expedite the levels of trust, commitment and length of relationships with their providers. The outcomes of this study offer valuable understandings on how companies in the food retail industry could profit from trust, commitment and relationship longevity along with on how to develop supply chain performance. The results of this study add to the current body of knowledge by generating new information on buyer-supplier relationships. Therefore, the study is useful to buyers and suppliers in the food retail industry who wish to enhance supply chain performance and develop better relationships.

E-commerce usage grew up rapidly in the business sectors. Its interaction run virtually which is from upstream to downstream or reverse process. This interaction is a description of SCM. SC performance measurement was employed to determine the level of performance that can be considered in determining strategic policy. This research aims to propose KPIs’ model for finance, information system and logistics capability dimensions in the e-commerce. The collecting of data was carried out by distributing questionnaires to respondents with amount of 100 questionnaires. In this research, the data was analyzed with the structural equation modeling (SEM) to test validity of KPI and hypotheses. As results in supply chain performance, 25 indicators are valid, involving 4 indicators on financial dimension, 9 indicators on logistic capability dimension, and 12 indicators on technology information dimension. Furthermore, this research finding is the logistic capabilities have significant effect on the financial aspect and information technology has a significant effect on logistics capabilities. This research finding may contribute on the development model of SC performance measurement.

<p>This article explores supply chain challenges faced by light vehicle manufacturers in South Africa and determines how difficult the challenges are to overcome. A mixed research design was employed. The supply chain challenges revealed in the findings were categorised into technological, infrastructure, cost, market/service, relationship and production/skills challenges. Most are difficult to quantify, such as road freight volumes, port delays, rail unreliability, high fuel costs, high operating costs and high port charges. Nevertheless, addressing some of the challenges could help manufacturers to become more competitive, for example by replacing outdated assembly/manufacturing tools, finding new markets, preventing or reducing the effect of cancellation of customer orders and improving the level of service in general. This article provides an understanding of the challenges in the supply chain, which is paramount not only for locally manufactured vehicle supply chain practitioners, but also for the automotive industry and South Africa as a whole.</p>

This study sought to delineate SCM features using the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) with a view to incorporating it into the delivery of construction projects in Nigeria. The study adopted an exploratory research design (quantitative and qualitative) methods. A purposive and convenient sampling technique was deployed with the aid of semi-structured interview, case study; questionnaire survey in a construction firm in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. Questionnaires were used to collect primary data after being pre-tested via a pilot study for validity and reliability. The data collected were analysed using the AHP. Findings from the study shows that the following features are key; Instituting trust and long term relationships amongst supply chain partners (ITP), supply chain finance (SCF), supply chain and continuous performance measurement (SCCPM), information technology (IT), quality management (QM), supply base management (SBM), senior management’s commitment (SMC) and supply chain orientation (SCO). In delivering construction projects to success using the SCM approach, adequate attention and emphasis should be accorded to the aforementioned important features in the order they appear as they would aid in effecting the much needed success. It is also expected that the features would further be beneficial to construction firms as it would enable the firms to manage, measure and evaluate the gains ensuing from the deployment of SCM techniques.

Supply chain analysis required in the entire business process because it produced a more sufficient product on the producer to the consumer level with the precise condition, time, and amount of product. This study purpose was to analyze the main product flow, mechanism, and supply chain performance of the chicken meat produced by the Dua Putra Perkasa Pratama Company (Inc.) The study location was chosen by a purposive sampling technique, while the participant selection done by judgment sampling technique. The participants were the supplier, key informant from the company, and customer. The supply chain, mechanism, and performance data analyzed by descriptive analysis method with the Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) model. Results showed that the flow of the supply chain, financial supply chain, and informational was moving from the upstream to downstream,  downstream to upstream, and upstream to downstream or downstream to upstream, respectively. The company supply chain performance classified in a very good range performance with a total score of 96.73.

The purpose of this chapter is to study what supply chain managers of a retail supply chain measure. In other words aim here to identify the key indicators for measuring retail supply chain performance. A qualitative approach is adopted. Published literature from refereed journals on supply chain performance measurement has been considered. Besides the need for organizations to adopt a holistic approach, firms remain focused on traditional financial measures (gross profit margin, Interest coverage, and debt and equity ratios). The chapter identifies key indicators for performance measurement and classifies them into four major categories: transport optimization, information technology optimization, inventory optimization and resource optimization. These key indicators are arranged precisely for retail industry. From a supply chain perspective, the non financial measures such as on-time delivery, training of employees, warehouse layout, etc. are also important aspects of measuring supply chain performance. Further research can be carried out to validate the relevance and applicability of identified indicators. The study can be further conducted to measure the interrelationships between the KPIs and their impact on financial performance of the firm. In this chapter the author attempts to identify the performance indicators specifically for retail supply chain. The identified measures are further categorized based on its operations.

Food retail industry plays an important part in gross domestic product (GDP). Buyers and suppliers in this industry work in collaboration with each other to achieve an optimal supply chain performance. The purpose of this study is to investigate the drivers of supply chain performance in the food retail industry in Gauteng province. These drivers are known as buyer- supplier trust (BST), buyer- supplier commitment (BSC) and supply chain relationship longevity (RL). This study adopted a quantitative method where a questionnaire was used to collect data from 429 food retailers in the Gauteng province. The study used a convenience sampling technique to select respondents. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 24.0 and Smart PLS were used to assist in the data analysis. The results of the research revealed that buyersupplier trust, buyer- supplier commitment and RL have a strong, positive and important impact on supply chain performance. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that to achieve supply chain performance, business’s operators should develop a significant relationship based on trust, commitment and relationship longevity. Furthermore, the results of this study provide useful insights on how businesses should benefit from trust, commitment and relationship longevity as well as how to improve supply chain performance. Practical and theoretical contributions, implications and recommendations are provided.
