In this paper we identify best industry practices and current trends in the development and management of software products. We discuss the strategic importance of developing appropriate operational capabilities that are prerequisites for achieving marketing success. We illustrate these concepts with examples from software companies to highlight how they achieved the desired balance between market demands and operational resources. Finally, we highlight the benefits these companies had derived from such an alignment.

ABSTRACT Since 1982, the software development community has been concerned with the delivery of quality systems. Software process improvement (SPI) is an initiative to avoid the delivery of low quality systems. However, the awareness and adoption of SPI is low. Thus, this study examines the rate of awareness, use, and benefits of SPI initiatives in Canadian software development firms. Using SPSS as the analytical tool, this study found that 59% of Canadian software development firms are aware of SPI programs and 43% of employees use a form of SPI programs to develop software products. Although the sample size is small and the results cannot be generalized, the sample firms that use SPI programs reported an improvement in software product quality as the greatest benefit. These findings confirm the importance of SPI programs as a means of producing higher-quality software products, which can increase the likelihood of software companies winning global contracts.

El presente Artículo de Investigación propone un modelo orientado a las necesidades de calidad total en las organizaciones dedicadas al desarrollo de software conforme a la alineación de los procesos de desarrollo y gestión con los objetivos organizacionales; lo cual hace pertinente la formulación de un modelo de gestión de procesos de desarrollo basado en los principios y prácticas del enfoque ágil, orientado hacia la aplicación de buenas prácticas y procesos de mejora continua. El modelo planteado se denomina SUMM - “Modelo Unificado de Madurez de Scrum” y está orientado a la gestión de procesos ágiles de desarrollo de software enmarcados en las buenas prácticas de CMMI-DEV 1.3 y el marco de trabajo de SCRUM. SUMM consta de cinco niveles de madurez, de acuerdo a la representación por etapas de CMMI - DEV, estos niveles a su vez están compuestos de Metas, Objetivos, Prácticas e Indicadores que permitirán a la organización poder emplear un modelo de desarrollo ágil de calidad, enfocados en procesos de mejora continua.AbstractThis article of Research proposes a model oriented to the needs of total quality in organizations dedicated to software development according to the alignment of development and management processes with organizational objectives, which makes the formulation of relevant management model development process based on the principles and practices of agile approach towards the application of best practices and continuous improvement processes. The proposed model is called SUMM - "Unified Model Scrum Maturity" and is focused on process management software development agile framed in the best practices of CMMI-DEV 1.3 and SCRUM framework. SUMM consists of five maturity levels, according to the staged representation of CMMI - DEV, these levels in turn are composed of Goals, Objectives, Practices and indicators that enable the organization to employ an agile development model quality focused on continuous improvement processes.

For very small software development companies, the quality of their software products is a key to competitive advantage. However, the usage of software engineering standards is extremely low amongst such very small software companies. A primary reason cited by many such companies for this lack of quality standards adoption is the perception that they have been developed for large multi-national software companies and not with small and very small organizations in mind and are therefore not suitable for their specific needs. This chapter describes the design and development of the software process lifecycle standard for very small entities. This chapter presents a unique insight from the perspective of some of the standards authors on the development of the ISO/IEC 29110 standard, including the rationale behind its development and the innovative design of implementation guides to assist very small companies in adopting the standards, as well outlining a pilot project scheme for usage in early trials of this standard.

This chapter aims to articulate the concerns and issues surrounding the relevance of computing programmes of higher education institutes in Jordan to market/employer needs. The information technology (IT) industry in Jordan has directed many criticisms to Jordanian institutes of higher education regarding the structure and content of programmes offered by IT faculties and departments, despite relentless effort to fulfilling shortages in the local and regional markets for adequate IT graduates. The chapter presents the findings of a local survey to assess the relevance of computing programmes to market/employer needs in Jordan. The survey identifies many of the skill gaps that exist and in acute need to be covered by a new breed of computing curricula in Jordanian institutes of higher education. Also, the survey emphasises the three most relevant areas of knowledge in computing programmes to industries’ needs: (1) systems/software development/engineering and management; (2) electronic business development and management; and (3) system/software development tools and languages.

Software testing, which is a knowledge-intensive and collaborative activity, is a sub-area of software engineering. Software testing knowledge can be applied to different testing tasks and purposes. Since software development is an error-prone task, in order to achieve quality software products, validation and verification should be carried throughout the development. This study, using qualitative methods, investigates the current practice of software testing practices in two software companies on the basis that they both claimed to apply software testing practices in their software development work. Interview results revealed some interesting latest trends in software testing from both companies.

Cloud computing is recently taking a significant focus in the information technology fields as a possible future trend for how computer services and applications can be provided to users or businesses. Cloud computing is utilizing the recent large expansion of Internet and network technologies where the increase in the data size and transfer speed made it possible to make the Internet or the cloud a possible host for all or most users’ applications and data. With this new technology, several changes are expected to occur in the information technology fields and systems to adapt to this field or technology. In this chapter, the author focuses on the possible impact on the way software companies will develop their software products. For example, the traditional client server system architecture is expected to be significantly impacted with cloud computing new framework. All software development concepts and activities will be revisited to discuss what things can be different in the cloud computing paradigm.
