Field experiment was conducted, during two successive seasons of 2014- 2015 and 2015- 2016, at Dokki protected agricultural site, Giza Governorate, Egypt, to study the profitability of different applied irrigation levels and polyethylene (PE) mulch on plant growth and yield of sweet pepper, (Capsicum annum L.) cv. Godion F1, under plastic house condition. Three irrigation levels (0.50, 0.75 and 1.00) of crop evapotranspiration (ETc), using drip irrigation system and three PE mulch treatments (transparent, black and control) were applied. Data revealed that black PE recorded the highest values of early and total fruit yield per plant during the two seasons. Increasing water level up to 1.00 (ETc) enhanced yield with different PE mulch treatments, while water use efficiency (WUE) decreased with increasing water level. However, Using 0.50 (ETc), with different PE mulches increased WUE compared to using 0.75 (ETc) or 1.00 (ETc). The economic assessment of costs and returns from different treatments were calculated. It was found that the average yield was higher in 1.00 ETc with black mulch. Gross margin per 540 m2 were analysed using yield data, price structures and production costs. The 1.00 (ETc) with black mulch had the highest gross margin which is USD 416.8 and USD 533 (1 USD= 9 Egyptian pound) for the first and second seasons, respectively. The benefit cost ratios (BCRs) per 540 m2 were analysed, and 1.00 (ETc) with black mulch had the highest BCR with 1.36 in the first season and 1.45 in the second season. Walp.). O experimento foi conduzido na área experimental da Embrapa Meio-Norte, localizada no município de Teresina, Piauí - Brasil, no período de julho a setembro de 2012. O solo local foi classificado como Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo de textura franco-arenosa. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram arranjados num esquema fatorial 5 x 4, sendo os fatores cinco níveis de irrigação: 393,53; 340,34; 300,50; 260,39 e 201,73 mm, aplicados por meio de um sistema de irrigação por aspersão convencional, e quatro densidades de plantas: 150.000; 200.000; 250.000; 300.000 plantas ha-1. Apenas na matéria seca não houve interação significativa entre os níveis de irrigação e densidade de plantas. A área foliar, produtividade de grãos, número de vagens por planta, massa de vagens, produtividade de vagens, comprimento de vagem e massa de cem grãos que apresentaram valores máximos de: 1.301,89 cm²; 1.668,86 kg ha-1; 2,24; 2.248,16 kg; 1.873,45 kg ha-1; 18,70 cm e 22,72 g, alcançados com as lâminas de: 367,86; 390,88; 393,53; 393,53; 393,53; 348,40 e 322,63 mm associados às densidades de: 188.000; 241.000; 110.000; 254.000; 254.000; 223.000 e 300.000 plantas.ha-1, respectivamente. Palavras-chave: estresse hídrico, adensamento, competição intraespecífica.  OLIVEIRA, S. Walp.). The experiment was carried out at the experimental area of Middle- North Embrapa in Teresina city, Piauí-Brazil from July to September 2012 in a Ultisol soil.  A randomized block experimental design was used with four replicates.  Treatments were applied in a   5 x 4 factorial design and 5 levels of irrigation as factors:  393.53; 340.34; 300.50; 260.39 and 201.73 mm applied through  an irrigation system by conventional sprinkler, and four plant densities:  150,000; 200,000; 250,000; 300,000 plants ha-1. A significant interaction between irrigation levels and plant density was found in all study parameters except for dry matter.  Leaf area, grain yield, number of pods per plant, pod weight, pod yield, pod length and hundred grain weight had maximum values of   1,301.89 cm²;  1,668.86 kg ha-1; 2.24; 2,248.16 kg; 1,873.45 kg ha-1; 18.70 cm and 22.72 g,  which were reached using the following  water depths:   367.86; 390.88; 393.53; 393.53; 393.53; 348.40 and  322.63 mm associated with densities of : 188,000; 241,000; 110,000;254,000; 254,000; 223,000 and  300,000 plants.ha-1 , respectively. Keywords: water stress, density, intraspecific competition.

An experiment was conducted in Sugarcane Research Institute (SRI) Faisalabad during 20172018 and 2018-2019 cropping seasons to find out the effect of different irrigation levels on growth and yield parameters of five sugarcane clones. Sugarcane is a tropical crop with C4 Photosynthetic metabolism. Due to irrigation water shortages, water stress is common in sugarcane. Major Responses of drought in sugarcane is leaf rolling. Stomatal Closure inhibition of stalk and leaf growth, leaf senescence and reduced leaf area (due to its phenomenal dry matter production capacity) are other symptoms of water stress.

Despite the worldwide importance of overhead, mechanized irrigation for crop production, the potential of this technology has been poorly studied in California. Field studies were conducted at Five Points, CA, in 2010 and 2012 to compare the effects of overhead irrigation (OH) and drip irrigation (DR) on transplanted tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) crop growth and yield. Similar amounts of water were applied to both systems in each year to match crop evapotranspiration demands. Crop growth measured by percent canopy coverage and aboveground biomass accumulation were similar between the OH and DR systems early in the growing season in both years but were lower in the OH system during the second half of each season. Tomato yield was 38% greater in 2012 than in 2010 and averaged over the 2 years, 48% higher in the DR than in the OH systems, respectively, due presumably to the higher soil water evaporation losses of the OH system relative to the DR system and also, we propose, to the ability of the drip system to very precisely apply in-season fertigations directly to the crop root zone while OH fertigations were applied at the soil surface and over a greater area. Soluble solids concentration of fruit in 2010 was 5.99% for the DR system and 6.65% for the OH system providing further evidence of water stress in the OH tomatoes. Production costs associated with transitioning from a subsurface drip tomato crop to a sprinkler or surface drip-irrigated crop such as onion (Allium cepa) or garlic (Allium sativum) could be $130 to $420 per acre lower with the OH system compared with the drip system, if yields were maintained. Because operation and labor costs of OH systems are typically lower than those of DR systems, further research on OH irrigation of tomato is warranted to address the shortcomings of OH management that this study has identified.

The study aimed response of CERES-wheat and CROPGRO-urd model for tarai region of Uttarakhand. Field experiments were conducted at N. E. Borlaug, Crop Research Centre, G. B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, Uttarakhand during rabi and kharif seasons 2007 and 2008. CERES-wheat and CROPGRO-urd models version v 4.5 were used in this study. Cultivar specific genotypic coefficients were derived for wheat and urd during calibration. Model validation based on several independent sets of growth and yield data, including different nitrogen and irrigation levels. For all parameters t-test was found non-significant (‘t’ calculated values were smaller than t tabulated values at 5% level of significance), indicating that there were least differences between observed and predicted values. The result obtained with the model demonstrated satisfactorily prediction of phenology, growth and yield and thus it can be used for the prediction of wheat and urd growth as well as yield in this region

The possibility of using sugar mill’s wastewater/effluent in irrigation was evaluated by investigating the effects of wastewater on growth and yield of wheat (Triticum aestivum cv. Prodip). The experiment was conducted at North Bengal Sugar Mill site in Natore during December 2011 to March 2012. Three irrigation treatments (I1: irrigation with fresh/tubewell water, I2: irrigation with a mixture of fresh and wastewater at 1:1 ratio and I3: irrigation with wastewater) under a main factor and three fertilizer treatments (F0: no application of fertilizer, F1: half dose fertilizer and F2: full dose fertilizer) under a sub factor were evaluated. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications of the treatments. Wheat was grown with three irrigations totaling 14 cm applied at 4, 26 and 43 days after sowing (DAS). Important growth and yield data of the crop were recorded. The highest grain yield of 1.829 t/ha was obtained under mixed water irrigation and the lowest grain yield of 1.469 t/ha was obtained under wastewater irrigation. The three irrigation treatments, however, provided statistically similar (p = 0.05) grain yield. For the interaction between irrigation and fertilizers, mixed water irrigation and full dose fertilizer application (I2F2) provided significantly higher grain yield (2.757 t/ha) than all other treatment combinations. The second highest yield, produced under freshwater irrigation and full dose fertilizer (I1F2), was statistically similar to the yield under wastewater irrigation and full dose fertilizer (I3F2). Organic farming has achieved significant growth in developing countries. However, it is still in some areas such as Gaza strip at embryonic stage. Introduction and promotion of organic farming would need more information about economic feasibility of shifting from the existing conventional farms to organic farming system. This is the main aim of this study. Data was collected from 100 randomly selected farmers in southern area of Gaza strip using standard questionnaire. Additional focus group discussions were conducted for further qualitative analyses. Data was also collected from the organic farm of Safe Agriculture Association where vegetables are organically produced and marketed. Gross margin and comparative analyses were used to describe cost structure of conventional and organic production and to assess economic potentialities to shift to organic farming. Results varied among vegetable crops as some crops showed very high economic potential to shift to organic farming while other crops did not. Major reasons for crops with good potential were higher yield under organic farming, premium market prices and lower production costs. Major reasons for lower economic potential to shift were the significant lower yield and higher production costs. The study recommends further technical research to explore organic production techniques that allows for higher yield and lower production cost. The study also recommends further market research to investigate consumers' preferences and willingness to pay for organic products.

An experiment was conducted at the research field of the Department of Agricultural Botany, Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Patuakhali under the Agro-ecological zone-13 (AEZ-13) during the period from November 2012 to February 2013. The aim of the study was to identify the most effective irrigation level for obtaining the better growth and higher yield performance of BARI Gom-25 that are suitable to cultivate under  coastal region of Patuakhali, Bangladesh. So, the present study was consists of five irrigations levels including control viz. control or no irrigation (T0), one irrigation at 25 DAS (T1), two irrigations at 25 and 40 DAS (T2), three irrigations at 25, 40 and 55 DAS (T3)  and four irrigations at 25, 40, 55 and 70 DAS (T4). The seeds of BARI Gom-25 were collected from the BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur on 22 November, 2012. The experiment was laid out in completely randomized block design (RCBD) with four replications and analysis was done by the MSTAT-C package program where means were separated by DMRT at 5% level of probability. Data were recorded on various growth and yield attributing traits. The plot size was 5 m2 (2.5 × 2.0 m) where row to row and seed to seed distances were 20 and 10 cm respectively. Data were collected on various morpho-physiological growth, yield and yield attributing traits. Results obtained from the present study, whole characters of the study were significant at 5% by the moisture (irrigation) levels where three irrigations given at 25, 40 and 55 DAS had most effective than that of other moisture levels and no irrigation. From the results investigation, it was found that the tallest plant (76.86 cm), maximum requiring days to anthesis (61.00 days), maturity (109.0 days) and maximum number of effective tillers (5.00 hill-1),the highest grain growth (3.11g at 36 DAA) and grains (44.00 spike-1) were obtained with three irrigation (T3) levels. Similarly, T3 further showed the greater performance on spike length (17.28 cm), 1000-seed weight (50.16 g), grain (4.16 t ha-1), straw (5.89 t ha-1) and biological yield (10.05 t ha-1) as well as the higher harvest index (41.39%). Investigated above whole characters were produced lower performances under no moisture (irrigation) treatments. These results indicated that irrigation at three times (T3) would be most advantageous irrigation levels for wheat production under the studied non saline ecosystem of coastal region.Progressive Agriculture 29 (2): 99-106, 2018
