The paper presents Tatyana V. Maydl’s researches of formation and patterns of distribution of natural reservoirs in carbonate deposits of the Timan-Pechora oil and gas province. Tatyana Viktorovna Maydl is a recognized specialist in oil and gas geology. Her significant contribution to the development of the theoretical base of formation of carbonate deposits in the region, reconstruction of sedimentation conditions, finding degree of influence of secondary transformations on the reservoir and filtration properties of carbonate rocks, development of the basis for geological models of carbonate reservoirs, are analyzed. In the field of studying the morphology of the void space in low-capacity carbonate reservoirs, T. V. Maydl found that in the Lower Silurian dolomites with a shadow biohermal structure had the best filtration features, and in the Upper Silurian — bioclastic limestones. The main volume of the void space in the first type is associated with caverns and cracks, in the second — with matrix porosity. We showed that the results of T. V. Maydl’s work were not only of theoretical, but also of practical importance.

The features of the chemical composition of formation waters of the Upper Permian, Lower and Middle Triassic aquifers within individual structures of the Malozemelsk-Kolguev monocline of the Timan-Pechora oil and gas bearing basin are examined. It is shown that the aquifers that, despite their remoteness from the recharge areas, had experienced repeated processes of dipping and uplifting of the territory, preserved the infiltration waters, but significantly transformed ones. To identify their genetic profile and determine the relationship with the processes of catagenetic changes, hydrochemical coefficients and indices of water saturation of calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate are calculated. It is established that the examined infiltration waters are characterized by high aggressiveness, dissolution ability, leaching and removal of main minerals. It is pointed out that the consequence of these processes is the formation of secondary void space and the creation of high capacitive and filtration properties of rocks. The universality of geochemical interaction between water and rocks in thermodynamically open geological systems is emphasized and it is confirmed by individual geological examples that the heterogeneity of the hydrochemical field can act as a cause of screening zones of oil and gas accumulation, as well as provide appropriate conditions for localization of hydrocarbon fluids.

The paper presents a comprehensive study of low-capacity Silurian carbonate reservoir rocks in the northeastern regions of the Timan-Pechora province. Silurian deposits in the sections of the Khosedayu swell, the Talbey block, and the Makarikha-Salyukin anticlinal zone are mainly secondary dolomites and, to a lesser extent, limestones, as well as with low-power interlayers of agrillites, clay dolomites, dolomite-anhydrite rocks. The deposits were formed in coastal-marine and shallow-marine conditions. As a result of the conducted studies, it was noted that dolomites with a shadow biohermal structure have the best filtration properties in the Lower Silurian, and bioclastic limestones – in the Upper Silurian. The reservoir rocks of the Talbey block of the Chernyshev ridge have the best filtration-capacitive properties. The main volume of the void space in the first case is associated with cavities and cracks, in the second one – with matrix porosity. However, the signs of modern karst in the salts of Malo-Tavrotinsky strata observed from the core indicate a possible reformation of the deposits, which requires more careful attention when predicting deposits. The results obtained can contribute to the design of a rational system for the development of hydrocarbon deposits.

Although the Outer zone of the Precarpathian foredeep is one of the oldest gas extraction regions of Ukraine it is still promising for the exploration of new oil and gas deposits. The main gas deposits are open here in the Miocene, but the number of unidentified structures is rapidly shrinking. The development of unexplored Cretaceous deposits and the possibility of opening up their deposits of oil and gas can provide an increase in the resource base. In this case, the importance of the prospects of oil and gas bearing capacity of Cretaceous deposits is determined by a set of criterion features, including the determination of the nature of collectors and caprocks distribution, the establishment of favorable hydrogeological, structural and tectonic conditions for the formation and conservation of oil and gas deposits. The substantiated oil and gas prospect increases the search engine success, and therefore the development of the hydrocarbon potential of the Cretaceous deposits of the Outer zone can make a significant contribution to the fuel and energy supply of Ukraine with its own raw materials. Generalization, systematization, and analysis of new and reinterpretation of previously performed geological and geophysical studies and the results of deep drilling made it possible to substantiate the reliable geological structure of the cretaceous deposits of the studied region, which will increase the efficiency of prediction of oil-and-gas saturation and determine the priority oil and gas prospecting objects for detailed geological and geophysical works in order to search for new oil and gas deposits. Research results will increase the efficiency of search work, and the growth of promising and projected resources will be a significant contribution to the task of stabilizing and increasing oil and gas production in Ukraine.
