Thierry Groensteen’s memoir recalls the intellectual ferment of colloquia held at Cerisy-la-Salle in Normandy, subsequently the venue for two conferences organised by Groensteen himself. The first, the ground-breaking Bande dessinée, récit et modernité [Comics, Narrative and Modernity] in 1987, was a key moment in the history of the theorisation of comics as art form. Groensteen’s own presentation explored the threshold of narrativity in comics, and other noteworthy contributions included those of the philosopher Henri Van Lier and Marc Avelot, whose reading of Martin Vaughn-James’s La Cage rescued this masterpiece from obscurity. This conference also laid the foundations for the Oubapo movement, the production of comics under constraint, whose later development Groensteen chronicles. The second, ‘La Transécriture’, in 1993, was an early exploration of comics as part of a cross-media environment.

This paper divided the evolution of modern Chinese vernacular architecture (1949–2010) into 3 stages: early exploration, confine and confusion, and modern development, by taking time line as the clue, vernacular characteristics of modern architecture in Xi’an during different phases as the support, and combining literature research and field investigation. On this basis, it reviewed historical background, relevant context and typical features of modern vernacular architecture in Xi’an during different phases, and further concluded the evolution laws and research level of modern Chinese vernacular architecture.

Background. An optimal exploration strategy creates a significant share in value of project on exploration stage. The paper describes an example of solving the following tasks: determining the feasibility of additional exploration drilling; evaluating the value of drilling of one or more exploration wells; determining the optimal placement for exploration wells and drilling order. Authors presenting the modification of VoI (Value of Information) method and its application. Materials and methods. Complex probabilistic models were created summarizing main uncertainties and limitations, both geological, technical and technological. At the first stage three equiprobable geological concepts were made. For each concept probabilistic geological modelling was proceeded and then realizations corresponding to values of reserves P10, P50, and P90 were selected. Further, detailed production forecasts and economic estimates were performed. The analysis used the well pad and the corresponding area for exploration drilling as a unit of calculation. In the article the authors introduced the concept of remaining uncertainty. Application of modified VoI method allowed to form ‘dynamic’ (i.e. depending on exploration wells drilling order) range of areas for additional exploration which provide the best decrease of remaining uncertainty. An additional exploration strategy has been formed, which includes the necessary and sufficient number of wells and their drilling order. A decision tree was created depending on the success or failure of each subsequent exploration well. Results. The use of the modified VoI approach made it possible to achieve the objectives and obtain economical estimates, all of which combined to facilitate the adoption of decisions. As a result, a program for two exploration well drilling was created which would reduce the uncertainty by 90% from its initial value. Conclusions: The adopted VoI method could be applied to fields at the stage of additional exploration as well as to fields at early exploration stage to develop an exploration drilling strategy.

Abstract Missile injuries of the sciatic nerve are frequently encountered in modern violent conflicts. Gunshot and fragment wounds may cause large nerve defects, for which management is challenging. The great size of the sciatic nerve, in both diameter and length, explains the poor results of nerve repair using autografts or allografts. To address this issue, we used a simple technique consisting of a direct suture of the sciatic nerve combined with knee flexion for 6 weeks. Despite a published series showing that this procedure gives better results than sciatic nerve grafting, it remains unknown or underutilized. The purpose of this cases study is to highlight the efficiency of direct sciatic nerve coaptation with knee flexed through three cases with missile injuries at various levels. At the follow-up of two years, all patients were pain free with a protective sensory in the sole and M3+ or M4 gastrocnemius muscles, regardless of the injury level. Recovery was also satisfying in the fibular portion, except for the very proximal lesion. No significant knee stiffness was noticed, including in a case suffering from an associated distal femur fracture. Key points to enhance functional recovery are early nerve repair (as soon as definitive bone fixation and stable soft-tissue coverage are achieved) and careful patient selection.
