The article analyses the questions directed by the listeners of Radio Wrocław to the persons running the programme Na końcu języka — On the tip of the tongue (until 2016 entitled Język polski — Polish language). The author, who answers the questions that trouble the listeners, collected them and analysed them. The aim of this paper is to present the questions asked by the listeners of Radio Wrocław, grouping them according to the language subsystems and trying to address the question of motivation of the individuals asking them. The material is consisted of questions asked over the last few years, out of which the most interesting or characteristic ones were selected. The results of the analysis show that the main difficulty for those asking the questions is morphology and semantics, but rarely syntax. The author presents the probable causes of linguistic problems of the listeners in the conclusions.

The article offers an insight into problematic issues the advanced learners of Polish as a FL cope with in terms of grammar in speaking and writing. It opens with a brief insight into teaching literature, poetry including, in a FL classroom. What follows includes types of poems and their potential to be used in the teaching context, mainly when teaching grammar. Having presented  the scope of linguistic problems experienced by the users of Polish as a FL, the type and frequency of grammatical problems are discussed. Polish grammar-based issues the foreigners struggle with constituted the main area of the research conducted among 146 students of the Polish Language Course attending the School of Polish Language and Culture at the University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland. The findings come from oral and written assignments produced by the sample in question, and, most frequently, reflect grammatical mistakes that are persistent and difficult to eliminate from the linguistic repertoire. Given that,  ways of using poetry as a means of a “grammar refresher” are suggested. These include a few examples of activities based on poems to be used  when trying to overcome particular linguistic difficulties, together with implications for teachers raising students’ language awareness and developing reflection on language per se.

The Process of Becoming Multilingual: Individual Language Biographies of Poles in BukovinaThis article focuses on multilingual female speakers born in Bukovina in the 1920s using the language biography method. Analysing selected language biographies of Poles living in southern and northern Bukovina entails focusing on a heritage language. The language biography method shows the development process of individual language awareness. The cases analysed in the study indicate that it is difficult to preserve the linguistic and cultural identity of an individual in mixed-language marriages. For Bukovinian Poles, the Polish language and the Roman Catholic religion are factors of identification and indigenous values symbolizing their belonging to the culture of their ancestors. These two elements are at the core of their identity and are fundamental cultural values which are passed on to children. All the language biographies presented in the article show the speakers’ multilingualism and the way and time in which they learned subsequent languages. Their acquisition was voluntary on the one hand, but imposed on the other.

The article presents the results of a survey on the linguistic awareness of participants of state certificate examinations in Polish as a foreign language. The survey was taken by those foreigners who passed the certificate examinations at the University of Wrocław in May 2018 (B1, B2 and C1 levels). The analysis of the survey material shows that the language awareness of the participants of the certificate exams is complex, and its functioning can be described in two basic aspects — competence and convictional. The competence aspect includes linguistic awareness based on recognising the need to know the components of the Polish language system and the resulting communicative effectiveness of utterances. The convictional aspect, on the other hand, relates to consciousness in sociolinguistic terms (the impact of the certificate on social relations) and consciousness in anthropological and cultural terms (revealed in comments on the knowledge of Polish language as a desired value).

On false language awareness and linguistic awareness in Polish language textbooks from the early 21st centuryMost Polish language textbooks correctly shape language concepts and language awareness in general. However, the author has found various errors in them. In the article he adopts a hypothesis whereby the errors are the reason why sometimes distorted, even false awareness of various aspects of language emerges as the Polish language is taught. To describe this phenomenon, he uses two main concepts: false language awareness and false linguistic awareness. He examines more than ten textbooks and exercise books used in three stages of the education process: years 4–6 of primary school, secondary school as well as high school and technical college.
