AbstractThis paper intends to discuss the ways Street Art has been promoting new affective inscriptions in the urban landscape of São Paulo city. This practice is verified through works promoting “sensible shocks”, which occur using signs that sensibilize the passerby’s look. The discussion starts addressing local cultural art movements in order to show how Brazilian Street Art is linked to other forms of politicization in the cities. Then, it is shown how the articulation of structures of feeling can be observed in the city in events involving disagreements between graffiti artistis and the municipal government. Finally, it is argued that the affective inscriptions reveal the social structures of the city and contribute to highlight imbalances between expectation and reality.

Graffiti art and street art have been increasingly described as an artistic movement, with a constant presence in the streets, but also in galleries and museums. In this article we use the term urban art to define this institutionalized category, originating from informal street expressions. In the specific context of the city of São Paulo (Brazil), most of the social actors that make up this art world have backgrounds linked to graffiti and pixação. These two urban subcultures are linked to informal forms of appropriation of the urban space through illicit inscriptions. In this article, we aim, on the one hand, to describe the features and singularities of urban art as an emerging art world and, on the other, to understand how careers are developed in this universe. The empirical data derives from a qualitative research (in-depth interviews and ethnographic observation) developed during the past three years.

Abstract In this article we reflect on the development of an educational fieldwork conducted along the Ipiranga River, in which we bring the debates concerning History of Science and Environmental Education closer together, by problematizing the social and environmental issues in the city of São Paulo in a contextualized and critical way. To that end, we established the limits for the hydrographic basin by highlighting the headwaters of the Ipiranga River and the changes it has undergone, as well as the political, sanitary and environmental meanings throughout the 20th Century. We associated the environmental issues with the history of two important institutions located along the river: The Botanical Garden and the Museu Paulista’s [São Paulo Museum] arboretum. We highlighted the practices, techniques and scientific representations that were developed on the sites, by valuing them as cultural heritage of the Brazilian science.

Observou-se que embora a cidade de Roma seja fortemente orientada ao turismo e a exploração da qualidade estética de sua paisagem, é mais permissiva em relação a presença de diferentes suportes de mídia exterior na paisagem urbana do que a cidade de São Paulo.*****The main aim of this paper is to present a comparative study between the cities of São Paulo and Rome, and how these cities are dealing with different types of urban outdoor advertising (Out-Of-Home media) in its regulations since these regulations shape the way commercial information is placed in the landscape. The information design depends, mainly, on the support it will be placed. Outdoor advertising has a strong impact on the urban landscape. Since the Clean City Law was implanted in São Paulo, several Brazilian cities have been encouraged to implement (or modify) regulations in this sense. In order to contribute to this discussion, a parallel between the city of São Paulo, a business city, and the city of Rome, strongly oriented to the tourism encouraged by its historical heritage, mainly architectonic, are presented in this paper. The results shown consider only the documental analysis (of the normative legislation, maps, and publications pertinent to the subject) which formed the basis for the evaluation of the landscape, and not the evaluation of the landscape itself. It refers to the initial stage of the research. Its character is, therefore, descriptive and the comparison established between the different case studies aims to foment the discussion around the paths followed by the cities to deal with the spread and diversity of the OOH media nowadays. It was observed that although the city of Rome is mainly oriented to tourism and the profiteering of the aesthetic quality of its landscape, it is more permissive in relation to the presence of different types of OOH media in the urban landscape than the city of São Paulo.

This article discusses symbolic aspects of the trade of traditional foods of different ethnic origins, led by enterprising refugees in the city of São Paulo, and has as its object of study the sale of the so-called ethnic / traditional foods in small enterprises in that city. The methodology used is qualitative, through a theoretical reflection, based on works from the Social Sciences and articles from exploratory surveys, conducted based on Capes Journals, Scopus and Google Scholar. The articles used address concepts such as ethnic commerce, ethnic food, cultural heritage, dietary practices, among others, which allow the analysis of ethnic entrepreneurship led by refugees in São Paulo and associates it with phenomena that allow us to establish a reflection on why they choose to undertake this area. as food relates to the memories, culture and identity of migrants.

In 2013 the urban authority for São Paulo city, Brazil, was interested in incorporating environmental aspects into the urban licensing process of diverse urban developments. To overcome concepts related simply to soil sealing, the initiative gave rise to a wide range of principles associated with environmental services and the consideration that green areas in this megacity are unequally distributed. Given the costs involved in analyzing each case and the legal uncertainty among entrepreneurs, it has become a tradition in Brazil for authorities in charge of urban licensing to follow general regulations rather than case-by-case studies, except in high-impact developments. In response, the São Paulo municipal government developed during the period from 2013 to 2016 a governing instrument to deal with these issues, known as the Environmental Quota (EQ). For that, the following guiding principles were established: (a) it should have a solid theoretical basis, with incentives for consistent public participation; (b) it should be flexible in such a way that it can provide a general framework within which a project designer can make decisions, rather than a set of rigidly determined solutions; and (c) it should consider inequalities in the availability of urban green infrastructure throughout the city. This paper will first detail the political-institutional context in which the EQ and its guidelines were established and implemented, then provide a general overview of the tool and the theoretical frameworks within which it was developed, and, finally, discuss the complex social decision-making process of its legal constraints. Moreover, it analyzes the implementation and application of the EQ to examine its effectiveness and how it relates to the city's gentrification. Furthermore, it is considered the replicability potential of the EQ to expand both the supply and distribution of green infrastructure and environmental services throughout the urban environment and, thus, contribute toward mitigating the intricate problems of urban environments in the Global South.

Abstract Background The concentration of child morbidity and mortality due to pneumonia in developing countries reflects the social inequities, which lead to greater exposure to risk factors and make access to prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease more difficult. This study aimed to map and assess the territorial risk for hospitalization due to Community-Acquired Pneumonia in children under 5 years of age. Methods Ecological study, carried out in the city of Ribeirão Preto, state of São Paulo, Brazil. The study population consisted of hospitalized children under the age of five, diagnosed with community-acquired pneumonia, in Ribeirão Preto-São Paulo-Brazil, from 2012 to 2013. Data were collected in different databases, by a trained team, between March 2012 and August 2013 and from the 2010 Demographic Census of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. The 956 urban census tracts were considered as the units of analysis. Descriptive statistics were performed for the sociodemographic characteristics, with the calculation of measures of absolute frequency and proportions for the categorical variables, using the Statistica software (12.0). The incidence of cases per 10,000 inhabitants was calculated by census tracts during the study period. For the identification of the spatial risk clusters, the Kernel density estimator and the Getis-Ord Gi* technique were measured from the Radius of the distance of 7,589 km, with p < .01, found using the Incremental Spatial Autocorrelation tool. Results The study included 265 children under the age of five, hospitalized due to community-acquired pneumonia. A concentration of cases was identified in the regions with greater social vulnerability (low income, poor housing conditions and homelessness), as well as a lower occurrence of cases in the most developed and economically privileged area of the city. The majority of the children lived in territories served by traditional primary healthcare units, in which the health surveillance and family and community focus are limited. Conclusions The results contribute to the comprehension of the social factors involved in child hospitalization due to pneumonia, based on the analysis of the spatial distribution, and address the interface with individual and institutional factors.

Abstract Background The concentration of under-5 child morbidity and mortality due to pneumonia in developing countries reflects the social inequities. This study aimed to map and assess the spatial risk for hospitalization due to Community-Acquired Pneumonia in children under 5 years of age and its association with vulnerable areas. Methods Ecological study in the city of Ribeirão Preto, state of São Paulo, Brazil. The study population consisted of hospitalized under-5 children, diagnosed with community-acquired pneumonia, in Ribeirão Preto-São Paulo-Brazil, from 2012 to 2013. Data were collected in different databases, by a trained team, between March 2012 and August 2013 and from the 2010 Demographic Census of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. For the identification of the spatial risk clusters, the Kernel density estimator and the Getis-Ord Gi* technique were performed. Generalized additive models were used to verify the association between areas with social vulnerability and the occurrence of childhood pneumonia. It is important to highlight that the tracts with the highest degrees of vulnerability, such as those identified as high vulnerability (urban) and very high vulnerability (subnormal urban clusters). Conclusions The results contribute to the comprehension of the social factors involved in child hospitalization due to pneumonia, based on the analysis of the spatial distribution. This approach revealed a strategic tool for diagnosing the disparities as well presenting evidences for the planning in health and strength health care system in achieving equity, welfare and social protection of children.

This chapter examines the São Paulo Municipal Chamber, focusing on three noise debates in São Paulo, the first two of which involve noise ordinances created in the 1990s, and enforced by the PSIU. The first debate revolves around the Evangelical lawmakers’ attempts to exclude, minimize, or hinder the impact of the noise ordinance on religious services. The second debate focuses on an ordinance that requires bars without acoustic insulation to close at 1:00 a.m.: a demand that faced strong opposition from nightlife businesses. The third debate circles back to the beginning of this article. I describe the recent attempt of a group of acoustic engineers to lobby the city administration for the systematic mapping of traffic noise. For the sound specialists, it is only with such an acoustic map that the municipal government can plan a truly sustainable city.

The ‘1st Congress Churches and LGBTI+ Community: ecumenical dialogues for respect for diversity’ was held between 19th and 22nd of June 2019, in the city of São Paulo. The Congress was organised by the Parish of the Holy Trinity of the Episcopal Anglican Church in Brazil and Koinonia–Ecumenical Presence in Service. As we consider this congress a historic landmark in the debates concerning religions and sexualities that escape from cisheteronormativity in Brazil, in the course of this article, we propose to analyse the social and political conjuncture that motivated the event. In a second step, we will briefly describe the structure of the event, as well as its objectives, in order to understand the assumptions that guided the construction of the Letter of São Paulo, the official and public document of the Congress, approved in plenary by the participants. We believe that the Congress and the Letter of São Paulo have political potential, as they claim the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex+ people as people of faith and denounce forms of oppression, exclusion and marginalisation reinforced by conservative and hegemonic religious discourses.
