We have been developing cat and seal robots – called "mental commit robots" – to help people psychologically, physiologically, and socially. The actual animal seal robot was developed for use in therapy. We used seal robots to assist the elderly at a health service facility for the aged. To determine psychological and social effects of seal robots in such a setting, we evaluated moods using a face scale, which expresses moods by illustrating facial expressions, and Profile of Mood States, which evaluates moods through a questionnaire. Seal robots used at the facility for three weeks. The moods of elderly people were improved by interaction with them.

We have developed a Robot Assisted Activity (RAA) program for recreational use in health care facilities for elderly people. The RAA program has been evaluated in such a facility to assess its usefulness. The program applies a standard classroom model, starting with homeroom and including lessons in the Japanese language, music, gymnastics, arithmetic, and other subjects. At the end of the program, there is a graduation ceremony. We use a video camera to record each scene. Each behavior and utterance of the participants is then analyzed. In addition, immediately upon completion of the RAA program, specialists conduct a Focus Group Interview (FGI) in which they collect comments, opinions, and requests from the participants. Ten elderly people participate in the program, two men and eight women (81.0±3.7 years old). All are residents at a health care facility in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. TheMMSE (MiniMental State Examination) score indicating the level of dementia is 24.1±3.0 points. Two participants are judged to be in a moderate stage of cognitive decline (21 points or less), six are in a mild stage (22-26 points), and the remaining two are normal. On the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), in which a score of 13.3±4.2 points indicates a state of depression, seven participants are judged to be depressive (11 points or more). The results of our study show that all participants have a favorable impression of the robot and nearly all have a positive opinion of the RAA program. This suggests that the program can be used for emotional and recreational therapy at health care facilities for the elderly. However, in spite of the overall success of the RAA program, we seldom observe interaction between participants and the robot.

Abstract. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of a Pilates-based fitness program on mood variables in older adults from Durango State, Mexico. An experimental design study was designed with a control group (CG), experimental group (EG), initial (pre-test), and final (post-test) measurements. Ten older adults participated in each group, whose ages were between 60 and 80 years. The program duration was 12 weeks with three sessions per week, each of 50 min. The Profile of Mood States (POMS) was used to assess mood. Data were analyzed by 2 x 2 ANOVA. Significant interactions between measurements and experimental groups were found for tension (p = 0.001), anger (p = 0.030), fatigue (p = 0.002) and the total score (p ≤ 0.0001). No significant interactions were found for depression (p = 0.065) and vigor (p = 0.125). A 12 week fitness program based on the Pilates method improved some but not all mood variables, which may be relevant to the achievement of good emotional health in the elderly.

An analysis of Medicare data for the 1985–86 financial year showed that the distribution of private psychiatric services varied greatly by age and sex. Females were greater users than males, except in childhood where the opposite was true. Service use was lowest for children and for the elderly and highest for the 35–44 year old group. Amongst patients receiving psychiatric services, elderly people were more likely to receive short consultations and ECT. These findings carry considerable implications for health service policy and for medical education.
