Engineering graphics education has long been a required component of technology and engineering education at the university level. In middle and high schools, the number of computer-aided design (CAD) programs continue to proliferate and grow. Lacking in the research related to these programs is the effect on non-cognitive factors such as self-efficacy. Self-efficacy is a predictor of success and perseverance and is an important consideration in technology and engineering education. This research investigates the psychometric properties of an instrument designed to measure the three-dimensional modeling self-efficacy among middle and high school students. This study found the Three-Dimensional Modeling Self-Efficacy Scale to be a reliable measure within this population with strong evidence of validity. Based on these findings, the scale was revised, and recommendations for future study were made. This research begins to fill a gap not only in research related to engineering graphics self-efficacy but also within a pre-college population, especially those who are historically underrepresented in engineering disciplines, in this case, female students.

This chapter per the author discusses challenges faced by first year pre-engineering students. Also discussed are several topics taught within the curriculum including: the engineering design process, sketching, measurement, the elements and principles of design, and three-dimensional modeling. The chapter proposes a design project for engineering students that would tie all of these concepts together to provide an additional learning opportunity for students and more relevant practice of skills like isometric sketching, creating three-dimensional computer-aided design models, and measurement. Samples of student work from the project are included.

The definition of the concepts of creativity is given, methods of using three-dimensional modeling used in the visual arts and science are given, taking into account the latest data in this field of activity. The research material was the work of various authors in the field of the development of creativity and creativity, as well as the materials of researchers in the field of three-dimensional modeling. Their use made it possible to study the ideas about the development of creativity in younger students. In the creative process, the productive and reproductive components of thinking have a direct connection and the ability to move from one to another. Thanks to this, the evolutionary ability of intelligent systems can be provided, as well as the ability to reproduce, analyze and design, since any complex system develops on the basis of contradictory properties. Imagination is intermediate between perception, thinking and memory. The peculiarity of this form of the mental process lies in the fact that imagination is peculiar only to people who are able to modify the world around them, change reality, and also create something innovative. Today, the use of modern advances in computer technology is freely distributed in many areas. In order to develop a person’s creative thinking, the use of computer technologies, including 3D modeling, plays a significant role. It can be noted that the need to develop creative thinking through 3D modeling is due to the fact that information technology will bring benefits in the field of national education. On the basis of the analyzed theoretical base, a system of tasks has been developed, including: questions requiring creative activity; simple creative tasks at the reproductive level; creative projects for 3D modeling. The inclinations to creativity are inherent in every younger student who needs to initially prepare the child for the search for new ideas and non-standard solutions. Creativity not only develops creativity, but also broadens the horizons, fosters personal qualities such as initiative, dedication and perseverance.

This paper considers an approach towards the building of new classes of symmetric closed curves with two or more focal points, which can be obtained by generalizing classical definitions of the ellipse, Cassini, and Cayley ovals. A universal numerical method for creating such curves in mathematical packages is introduced. Specific aspects of the provided numerical data in computer-aided design systems with B-splines for three-dimensional modeling are considered. The applicability of the method is demonstrated, as well as the possibility to provide high smoothness of the curvature profile at the specified accuracy of modeling.

The article discusses the problems of teaching students engineering and computer graphics in a single course based on a computer-aided design (CAD) system. Examples of training tasks for acquiring knowledge, skills and abilities in the environment of the drawing and graphic editor of the AutoCAD system are given. They are necessary when performing drawings on engineering graphics, as well as the graphic part of course projects for students of mechanical specialties. Examples of exercises for self-study of the material are considered for a deeper study of the drawing-graphic module structure of the system and the acquisition of skills to work with its tools. The article also discusses several topics for studying the graphical editor AutoCAD, it reveals their contents and provides methods for completing practical tasks. A comprehensive training program extends the ability of teachers to submit material, increases students' interest in graphic disciplines, so it can achieve better results in their development. However, there are a number of problems with this approach. Different levels of basic knowledge of students in the field of computer technology require greater individualization in the organization of the educational process. An additional burden for the teacher is to check the electronic drawings and to control the independence of students' work when performing graphic works using CAD. Combining engineering and computer graphics requires more intensive work from students. It is noted that the implementation of the proposed set of tasks is only the first stage  of training students in computer technologies for creating design documentation. The acquired knowledge, skills and working skills in the environment of the AutoCAD system will be in demand when studying modern means of three-dimensional modeling. The execution of drawings using computer tools is undoubtedly more attractive to students, compared to traditional drawing. It is also important to create conditions for actualizing the intellectual potential of students, as well as the formation of positive motivation. Enthusiastic students independently master the functions of the system that are not intended for study by the curriculum. They participate with pleasure in Olympiads in engineering and computer graphics. Ways of improving the verification of graphic works by a teacher are developped.  A partial solution to the problem of checking the graphic part of course projects using preliminary drawings in a draft version and intermediate printouts of their electronic versions are proposed.

Introducing three-dimensional modeling technology into the teaching of modern engineering graphics is a hot topic for graphics areas in recent years. Three-dimensional geometric modeling principles, methods, and skills will be integrated and infiltrated to modern engineering graphics course, and this will form a new teaching theory, content and process with modern engineering graphics teaching trends. The teaching reform of modern engineering graphics in the three- dimensional modeling environment must be imperative. This paper analyzes the shortcomings of a traditional teaching system, and explores the teaching mode which three-dimensional modeling is as the mainline and integrates two-dimensional design. Also proposes a combination of teaching methods, and makes the exploration of teaching reform.
