At the World Bank, coastal zone management (CZM) is a part of Integrated Coastal Management (ICM), is an interdisciplinary roomates and Intersectoral approach to problem definition and solutions in the coastal zone, it includes a range of initiatives that promote the environmentally sustainable development of coastal areas, and encompasses a range of activities such as community-based management of coastal resources, large-scale infrastructure development (ports, industrial and residential parks, etc..), pollution and erosion control, aquaculture, tourism and recreation, oil spill contingency planning, and navigational risk assessment.CZM is a process of governance that consists of the legal andinstitutional framework Necessary to Ensure that development and management plans for coastal zones are integrated with environmental and social goals, and are developed with the participation of those affected.The purpose of the ICM is to maximize the benefits providedby the coastal zone and to minimize the conflicts and Harmful effects of activities on social, cultural and environmental resources.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> One of the objectives of the Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) is to prevent and reduce the effects of natural hazards, particularly ones caused by climate changes. The ICZM methodologies include use of geographic information systems, from data collection and geo-analysis to dissemination of information to the public. As a part of the Interreg MED Co-evolve project cofinanced by the European regional development fund, the ICZM based action plan is being developed for the City of Kaštela in Croatia. Activities include assessing coastal vulnerability to climate change, focusing on sea flooding and storm damages and related socio-economic vulnerabilities. The paper presents development of large scale vulnerability analysis, adopted from the methodologies developed for mid and small scales. Suitability of the available data is assessed, either official or open source, and data gaps are described. The analysis’s results are presented in terms of the assets exposed to coastal flooding and storms, and future improvements of analysis towards house level vulnerability analysis is envisaged.</p>

The growing pressure on the coastal ecosystem, e.g. through fisheries, tourism or maritime traffic demands the careful balancing of activities and developments in the coastal zone. Strategies and planning tools like Integrated Coastal Zone Management (UNEP/MAP/PAP, 2008) or the ecosystem approach (which is planned to be implemented in the EU through the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, European Commission, 2008) aim at a holistic, environmentally friendly and sustainable development of the world’s coastlines. Especially in view of rising sea levels, coastal protection becomes crucial for many densely populated coastlines. For the past few decades beach nourishments have been carried out in many coastal regions as “environmentally friendly” alternative to hard coastal protection structures, such as groins, revetments or breakwaters (Hamm et al, 2002). However, the extraction, transport and deposition of sediment can have (long-term) impacts on the environment, which are often not completely understood. Subsequently, these impacts cannot be fully taken into account in national and local nourishment practice, leading to an insufficient implementation of the ecosystem approach.

The Day river coastal zone is the place of plentiful and eventful economical activities and the natural habitat of diverse endemic species that should be preserved and developed. According to the updated geological, remote-sensing and oceanographic data sources, this study figures out the actual state, evolutional history and forecasts the development of the Day river coastal zone up to the year 2070, which could be used to improve the effectiveness of the long-term spatial coastal zone management and master planning. Major conclusions are as follows: (i) The Day river coastline has been highly modified since the last 50 years, (ii) The shoreline seaward development tends to gradually decrease in recent years, and (iii) The river-bed continues to be shifted southwestwards in the context of global climate change and sea level rise.

Coastal zone management requires an understanding of the complex milieu of interactions and activities taking place in an environmental system. Man is beginning to recognize that the old method of dealing with individual issues and problems as single fragment of a whole ecosystem is not enough. This paper tries to deal with the integrated manner in carrying out effectively the management of the coastal zone in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro by the Man and the Biosphere Interagency Committee on Ecological Studies. To attain the objective of the project, the different agencies monitor, identify, observe, investigate various natural and physical parameters contributing to the ecological balance and study the rational use of the resources along the coastal zone. Result of the study showed that although such factors as land use practices of shifting cultivation (kaingin), human attitude towards forest and its resources, and continuous increase in population and migration of people were observed, such pressure on lands has not greatly affected the Puerto Galera coastal zone resources.
