Abstract As major oil and gas companies have been investing in renewable energy, renewable energy has been part of the oil and gas industry in the last decade. Originally, renewables were seen as a competing form of energy source as a threat that may replace or decrease the share of fossil fuels as an alternative energy resource in the US and developed countries. However, oil and gas industry has adapted to the wind of change and has started investing and utilizing the renewable sources of energy significantly. In this perspective, this study investigates and outlines the latest advances, technologies, potential of renewables both as an alternative and a complementary source of energy in the world n the current supply and demand dynamics of oil and gas resources. A comprehensive literature review focusing on the recent developments and findings in the renewable resources along with the availability of the renewable energy and locations are outlined and discussed under the current dynamics of the oil and gas market and resources. Literature review includes a broad spectrum that spans from technical petroleum literature with very comprehensive research using SCOPUS database to non-technical but renowned resources including journals and other publications including raw data as well as forecasts and opinions of respected experts. The raw data and expert opinions are organized, summarized and outlined in a temporal way within its category for the respective energy source. Not only the facts and information are outlined for the individual type of energy resource but also the relationship between the forms of energy resources are discussed from a perspective of their roles either as a competing or a complementary source to oil and gas. In this sense, this study goes beyond only providing raw data or facts about the energy resources but also a thorough publication that provides the oil and gas industry professional with a clear image of the past, present and the expected near future of the oil and gas industry as it stands with respect to renewable energy resources. Among the few existing studies that shed light on the current status of the oil and gas industry facing the development of the renewable energy are up-to-date and the existing studies within SPE domain focus on facts only lacking the interrelationship between the individual form of renewable energy and oil and gas such as solar energy used in oil and gas fields as a complementary renewable energy.

This article provides an assessment of how the findings of the Alberta Court of Appeal in OMERS Energy v. Alberta (Energy Resources Conservation Board) compare and conflict with the approach historically taken by Canadian courts addressing the capability of a well and related issues. The authors then provide an analysis of uncertainties created by the findings of the Court and discuss the implications of the decision for the upstream oil and gas industry.

This chapter examines the deep Texas-California divide over energy and environmental policies. The modern Texas economy was built on energy, and the state remains the nation’s leading producer. The state’s development of fracking has revolutionized the oil and gas industry and has helped the nation break its dependence on foreign oil. Texas has also increased its production of renewable energy, but believes the global economy will rely for the foreseeable future on fossil fuels and resists restrictions on these resources. California, by contrast, has become a global leader in the fight against climate change. It has aggressively regulated carbon emissions and mandated a massive switch to renewable energy sources. California is the only state that can impose emissions regulations more strict than federal standards. As power has shifted in Washington, California has alternated between translating its environmental policies into federal law and defending its policies from federal challenge.

In Romania, major focus and interest are currently expressed for the energy strategies domain. The increase of the energetic efficiency is therefore a main concern for the authorities. In the current paper the main factors which are leading to the increase of this energetic efficiency are highlighted. These are: CHP (Combined Heat Power), combined cycles, the use of RER (reusable energy resources). The article also contains a classification of the RES (secondary energy resources) as function of the thermodynamic agent nature and/or its thermodynamic state. The theory and concepts are strengthened with relevant examples which have direct applicability in the oil and gas industry.

Climate change is an emerging issue with the potential to have a significant impact on the energy sector and, more specifically, the oil and gas industry. Pressures from public opinion and the introduction of climate change policy and regulations could affect the competitiveness of the industry. Conversely, incentives and subsidies for renewable energy or other lower carbon energy sources could present a potential opportunity for companies looking to diversify their asset portfolios.Australia has implemented a range of mandatory and voluntary schemes that encourage the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. There is still, however, uncertainty as to if and how a cost of carbon may be regulated in the future.

The petroleum (oil, gas and LNG) business environment in 2020 was adverse. Two factors disrupted the foundations of the global oil and gas industry. First, the COVID-19 global pandemic caused an unprecedented reduction of demand that combined with high levels of production resulted in oversupply of oil, gas and LNG. This gap between supply and demand resulted in a collapse in commodity prices, reduced revenues and cancelling or deferral of investment. Second, societal awareness of the impact of climate change on planet Earth increased. Pressure to reduce carbon emissions and a concomitant societal-shift against carbon-emissions intensive petroleum-based forms of energy generation intensified. Many major players in the petroleum industry re-framed their strategies to focus on energy supply in general and in some cases plan to cease their exploration, development and production activities in the coming decades. In Australia, in part global factors manifested in the deferral of investment decisions on three LNG investments. The Australian Government signalled that gas developments would be a critical part of Australia’s post-COVID recovery and that management of abandonment and decommissioning liabilities would be a factor in the approval of transactions leading to a change in ownership. This paper will describe each of the factors faced by the industry in 2020 and frame the issues facing the petroleum industry in 2021 and beyond.

The fresh forecasts on the probable state of world oil and gas industry up to 2035 have appeared in late 2011. The article deals with the main points and conclusions of the available forecasts of the International Energy Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy, especially concerning supposed indicators of output and consumption of primary energy resources, primarily crude oil, in the whole world and with breakdown by regions.

Abstract This paper provides an overview of the work completed to design, qualify, manufacture and integrate electrical and optical double barrier penetrators with the Electrically Trace Heated Pipe-in-Pipe (ETH-PiP) as part of the Neptune Energy Fenja Development Project. Typical subsea penetrator systems in the oil and gas industry, such as pumps, compressors and X-trees are designed to be retrievable, to enable periodic refurbishment as well as providing the option for replacement, if required. However, the ETH-PiP architecture makes retrieval of system components complicated and uneconomical. Both the electrical and optical dual barrier penetrator system designs have to comply with a set of ETH-PiP specific criteria, such as to be maintenance free over a 25 years service life, prevent water ingress to the pipeline, provide pressure containment for operational media (in an unlikely scenario where the inner pipe bursts) and guarantee minimum footprint to allow an optimum integration onto the Pipeline End Termination (PLET) structure. In addition, the electrical system has to comply with a medium voltage rating (i.e. 5.0/8.7kV) to ensure a wide range of possible ETH-PiP architectures. The optical system has to maintain insertion loss below 0.5dB and a back reflection below -45dB to comply with the stringent requirements of distributed temperature monitoring sensor system over long distances. The qualification program of the electrical dual barrier penetrator system was performed in accordance with IEC 60502-4 and SEPS-SP-1001. A tailor made sequence had to be developed for the optical system, based on guidance from SEAFOM-TSD-01, considering that the system partly falls outside the associated standard application. The electrical dual barrier penetrator system qualification sequence was developed in two phases; firstly, the electrical transition contacts in the feedthrough chamber were qualified in accordance with IEC 60502-4 and secondly, four electrical double barrier penetrator prototypes were manufactured to allow the completion of the qualification sequence defined as per SEPS-SP-1001. The optical dual barrier penetrator system qualification employed the manufacturing of three prototypes to execute the pre-defined qualification sequence. Following the individual qualification of the electrical and optical dual barrier penetrator systems, subsequent welding and full-scale assembly trials were performed to ensure that the maximum allowable temperatures within the penetrators would not be exceeded during welding to the PLET, and to proof test the assembly procedure. Electrical verification testing was also undertaken during these trials to verify that the integrity of the penetrators had been maintained during the assembly and that the PLET arrangement did not give rise to any electrical stresses that could result in excessive deterioration of the penetrators. Integration of the four electrical and two optical dual barrier penetrator systems to the project PLET was completed in Q1 2020, with the actual subsea installation of the first ETH-PiP section including the PLET in Q3 2020.

Employees have long been playing the pivotal role in service organizations to achieve a success-oriented goal. The oil and gas industry is included in the high rising sectors in the world’s economy. Due to economic turmoil in this sector, a fear of being laid off remains in an employee’s mind. Thus, the goal of this study is to assess the impact between internal marketing factors (e.g., extrinsic and intrinsic employee rewards, leadership, internal communication, and training and development), and employee job satisfaction in the oil and gas industry. There were 215 complete and usable questionnaires received, and the answers varied among the demographic and functional designation within the oil and gas industry. Multiple regressions were utilized for analysis of data. Results revealed that internal communication is recognized to have the strongest effect on employee job satisfaction in the oil and gas industry. Organizations must emphasize on communicating to all level of employees by setting clear directions and key priorities in the organization, provided that the communications are not misled through upward and downward streams. Furthermore, organizations are to create a space for employees to give clear instructions via e-mail, paper, telephones, and face-to-face communication. A management can utilize the research results by conducting such internal marketing practices to keep their top rated employees within the organization. ut the individual differences related to entrepreneurial intentions, it is necessary to continue studying this phenomenon, considering that the results are still scarce and inconclusive.

The article examines high-risk objects in which it is necessary to monitor its state to prevent hazardous activities during the cycle of preparation of energy resources. The paper examines IT projects that help to if not prevent, then at least minimize the consequences of the negative impact of hazardous industries in process of preparation of energy resources. Due to the fact that currently, there are no uniform and specific requirements for the functionality of such information systems in public services, companies are implementing pilot projects for the implementation of the above tasks. All stages of the pilot project were formed and analyzed in detail. Based on the survey results, the requirements for the functional blocks of the information system were determined. The findings of the study were formed and presented for further use for the project management activities for the company in the oil and gas industry. Implementation of the project in pilot format is the most suitable option in the current conditions. This allows minimizing project risks associated with exceeding the deadlines, budget, as well as inconsistencies of current functionality with the needs of system users by ensuring the possibility of developing and testing the system in a short time and clarifying the future direction of IT solution refinement.
