Learnings from Building a Vendor Agnostic Automated Directional Drilling System

Abstract The post COVID-19 era will undoubtedly present paradigm shifts in operational planning and execution and advanced automation will become an important factor. However, drilling automation without directional drilling (Cayeux 2020) capability will exclude the use of automation in a vast number of fields where precise placement of the wellbore has shifted from a luxury to a necessity. This is important in unconventional plays where automation can make a step change in operational outcomes (Chmela 2020). However, most efforts in automating directional drilling are using bespoke rigs (Slagmulder 2016) and bespoke bottom hole assembly (BHA) that limit operational options. The goal is in designing systems that enable directional drilling automation (Chatar 2018) with existing BHAs. This paper will look at three challenges that were identified and overcome to deploy a vendor agnostic system for automating the directional drilling (DD) process. The three challenges identified here are as follows:Using any mud motor including low-cost motors in a closed loopIntegration with an existing measurement and logging while drilling (MLWD) systemAbility to roll out automation systems on any operations with existing rigs The system is a modification of an operator’s autonomous drilling system (Rassenfoss 2011), designed to use existing rigs, BHAs and have minimum footprint on the rigs for operational use. The system will have a dedicated connection to the rig’s programmable logic controller (PLC) via common industrial protocols including Modbus, EthernetIP or Profinet, a physical connection the MLWD receiver and a brain box with a cloud connection to aggregate, process data and send commands to the rig PLC to execute directional commands. A vendor agnostic system will increase adoption of automated technologies and further drive improvements in operational and business performance.

ABSTRACT In a cost-sensitive market driven by depressed commodity prices, significant capital challenges exist for operators interested in pursuing exploration activities in remote environments to define their producible reserves. This paper explores the organizational and operational model developed by a service company over several remote area mobilizations; this model resulted in an optimized low-cost service delivery model characterized by top quartile operational key performance indicators (KPIs). The model centralizes critical functions of an operational organization into discrete service units that are located near the operational location or that provide remote assistance with communication and reporting lines in place to function effectively. Top quartile operational performance and tool availability is a result of placing a remote repair and maintenance facility that includes containerized specialty modules near the operational area. The upfront bottomhole assembly engineering, 24/7 monitoring, and proactive feedback of logged data, drillstring dynamics, and wellbore hydraulics are performed by a core team of subject matter experts in their respective disciplines from an established centralized operating center. The operational KPIs over the course of the six well exploration campaign provided substantial evidence to support the reliability of the model and the high level of experience used in both the remote maintenance facility and the operations center support team.

This article describes how cloud computing has emerged as a strong competitor against traditional IT platforms by offering low-cost and “pay-as-you-go” computing potential and on-demand provisioning of services. Governments, as well as organizations, have migrated their entire or most of the IT infrastructure to the cloud. With the emergence of IoT devices and big data, the amount of data forwarded to the cloud has increased to a huge extent. Therefore, the paradigm of cloud computing is no longer sufficient. Furthermore, with the growth of demand for IoT solutions in organizations, it has become essential to process data quickly, substantially and on-site. Hence, Fog computing is introduced to overcome these drawbacks of cloud computing by bringing intelligence to the edge of the network using smart devices. One major security issue related to the cloud is the DDoS attack. This article discusses in detail about the DDoS attack, cloud computing, fog computing, how DDoS affect cloud environment and how fog computing can be used in a cloud environment to solve a variety of problems.

Artificial intelligence (AI) contributes to the recent developments in Industry 4.0. Industries are focusing on improving product consistency, productivity and reducing operating costs, and they want to achieve this with the collaborative partnership between robotics and people. In smart industries, hyperconnected manufacturing processes depend on different machines that interact using AI automation systems by capturing and interpreting all data types. Smart platforms of automation can play a decisive role in transforming modern production. AI provides appropriate information to take decision-making and alert people of possible malfunctions. Industries will use AI to process data transmitted from the Internet of things (IoT) devices and connected machines based on their desire to integrate them into their equipment. It provides companies with the ability to track their entire end-to-end activities and processes fully. This literature review-based paper aims to brief the vital role of AI in successfully implementing Industry 4.0. Accordingly, the research objectives are crafted to facilitate researchers, practitioners, students and industry professionals in this paper. First, it discusses the significant technological features and traits of AI, critical for Industry 4.0. Second, this paper identifies the significant advancements and various challenges enabling the implementation of AI for Industry 4.0. Finally, the paper identifies and discusses significant applications of AI for Industry 4.0. With an extensive review-based exploration, we see that the advantages of AI are widespread and the need for stakeholders in understanding the kind of automation platform they require in the new manufacturing order. Furthermore, this technology seeks correlations to avoid errors and eventually to anticipate them. Thus, AI technology is gradually accomplishing various goals of Industry 4.0.

Abstract During the past decade, drilling automation systems have been an attractive target for a lot of operating and drilling companies. Despite progress in automation in various industries, like mining and downstream, the drilling industry has lagged far behind in the real application of autonomous technologies implementation. This can be attributed to harsh environment, high level of uncertainty in input data, and that majority of stock is legacy drilling rigs, resulting in capital intensive implementations. In the past years there have been several attempts to create fully automated rigs, that includes surface automation and drilling automation. Such solutions are very attractive, because they allow people to move out of hazardous zones and, at the same time, improve performance. However, the main deficiency of such an approach is the very high capital investment required for development of highly bespoke rigs (Slagmulder 2016). And in the current business environment, with high volatility in oil and gas prices, plus the huge negative effect of the Covid-19 crisis on the world's economic situation, it would be hard to imagine that there are a lot of companies willing to make such a risky investment. In addition to this, due to the lack of demand, the market is full of relatively new, high-performance rigs. Taking all these into account, the obvious question is whether it makes sense to invest money and time into the development of drilling automation. The answer should be yes, for three substantial reasons:Automation improves personal safety, by moving people out of danger zones;Automation improves process safety, by transferring execution from person to machine, which reduces the risk of human error;Automation improves efficiency by bringing consistency to drilling and through the use of self-learning algorithms, which allow machines to drill each successive well better than the previous. This paper will not look into surface automation, such as pipe-handling, chemical and mud handling on site. The paper is focused on the subsurface, namely on the drilling automation process, the challenges that need to be overcome to deploy a vendor agnostic system on a majority of existing rigs. A vendor agnostic system is a modification of an operator's autonomous drilling system (Rassenfoss 2011), designed to use existing rigs, BHAs, and have minimum footprint on the rigs for operational use. A vendor agnostic system will increase adoption of automated technologies and further drive improvements in operational and business performance

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) provides primary healthcare (PHC) for some 5 million Palestine refugees in five operational fields (Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, West Bank and Gaza) through its 143 health centres (HCs). UNRWA started, in 2009, developing an electronic health records (e-Health) system. The primary aim was to improve the quality of services and to respond to the increasing workload and the rise in the prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The system was developed in-house based on the Family Health Team approach as a web-based, patient-centred application to support UNRWA’s health services for common illnesses, maternal and child health, NCDs, laboratory and pharmacy. It has a built-in appointment system, uses the International Statistical Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition classification and generates 29 reports. By October 2017, the system was rolled out in 121 HCs, of which 100 are paperless, covering almost 3 million refugee population, and managing some 9 million visits a year. The number of physician’s daily consultations was reduced from 104 to 85. It enabled the introduction of an innovative cohort analysis to monitor patients with NCD efficiently. 89% of doctors expressed their satisfaction concerning timesaving and efficiency of e-Health. Long-standing effective PHC services, detailed clinical guidelines, well-trained staff and in-house development made that roll-out possible. Interoperability enabled operation in five different fields. However, the main challenges include HCs’ infrastructure and connectivity. UNRWA is working to address such challenges to complete the roll-out, except for HCs in Syria, by the end of 2017. UNRWA’s experience indicates that implementing such an innovation is possible and can improve efficiency, effectiveness and control the duplication of PHC services. Mobile technologies (m-Health) and integration with host countries’ e-Health systems are planned to achieve best value for low cost.

The popularity of jute-based bio and hybrid composites is mainly due to an increase in environmental concerns and pollution. Jute fibers have low cost, high abundance, and reasonable mechanical properties. Research in all-natural fibers and composites have increased exponentially due to the environment concerns of the hazards of synthetic fibers-based composites. Jute based bio and hybrid composites have been extensively used in number of applications. Hybrid jute-based composites have enhanced mechanical and physical properties, reasonably better than jute fiber composites. A detailed analysis of jute-based bio and hybrid composites was carried out in this review. The primary aim of this review paper is to provide a critical analysis and to discuss all recent developments in jute-based composites. The content covers different aspects of jute-based composites, including their mechanical and physical properties, structure, morphology, chemical composition, fiber modification techniques, surface treatments, jute based hybrid composites, limitations, and applications. Jute-based composites are currently being used in a vast number of applications such as in textiles, construction, cosmetics, medical, packaging, automobile, and furniture industries.

The Flexible track automatic drilling equipment is widely used in aircraft assembly because of the low cost, high efficiency and high quality of holes. This paper constructs a new flexible track drilling system for large-size aircraft assembly. The system structure is introduced, and the transformation algorithm between product/device coordinate system and axes position parameters is proposed. The experimental results show that the transformation algorithm has the merits of high computational efficiency and high stability, and can meet the requirement of precision drilling.
