Abstract Background: Changes in dietary vitamin C intake have been related to the risks of various cancers. However, the association between dietary vitamin C intake and the risk of ovarian cancer has not been fully determined. A meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the relationship between vitamin C intake and ovarian cancer risk. Methods: Observational studies that evaluated the association between vitamin C intake and ovarian cancer risk were identified via systematic search of PubMed and Embase databases. A random effect model was used to combine relative risk (RR) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: Sixteen studies (5 cohort studies and 11 case-control studies) with 4,553 cases and 439,741 participants were included. Pooled results showed that dietary vitamin C intake had non-significant association on the risk of ovarian cancer (RR=0.95, 95%CI= 0.81-1.11, I2= 52.1%, P for heterogeneity= 0.008). Subgroup analyses according to characteristics including geographic location and study design showed consistent results with the overall result. Conclusions: In summary, findings from this study indicated that dietary vitamin C intake is not associated with the risk of ovarian cancer.

Abstract BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated some associations between dietary vitamin A intake and ovarian cancer risk with an inconsistent relationship. We therefore performed the present study to further explore the association between them. METHODS: Databases of PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were retrieved up to September 1, 2019. Summarized relative risk (RR) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. Stata 14.0 software was used for data analysis. RESULTS: Fifteen articles involving 4882 cases and 443,179 participants were included in this meta-analysis. A positive association between dietary vitamin A intake and ovarian cancer risk was found (RR = 0.816, 95%CI = 0.723–0.920, I2 = 48.4%, Pfor heterogeneity = 0.019). Significant association was also found in case–control studies (RR = 0.769, 95%CI = 0.655–0.902), but not in cohort studies. When we performed the analysis between ovarian cancer risk and geographic locations, we found an inverse association in North American populations (RR = 0.825, 95%CI = 0.720–0.946), instead of other populations. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, findings from the present study suggested that higher dietary intake of vitamin A may contribute to the lower development of ovarian cancer, especially among North Americans.

Whether serum copper levels were higher in patients with cervical cancer than that in controls was controversial. Hence, we conducted the present study to explore the relationship between serum copper levels and cervical cancer. We searched PubMed, WanFang, and China National Knowledge Internet (CNKI) for relevant studies before November 30, 2017. Standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to combine results across studies using the random-effect model. A total of 14 publications involving 747 patients with cervical cancer and 1014 controls were eligible through inclusion criteria. In comparison with controls, serum copper levels were significantly higher in patients with cervical cancer [summary SMD = 1.35; 95%CI: 0.10–2.59], with significant heterogeneity (I2 = 98.8%; P<0.001) was found. Significant association was also found among Asian populations [summary SMD = 1.39; 95%CI: 0.06–2.71]. The association was positive in subgroup analysis of population-based case–control studies (PBCC) [summary SMD = 1.64; 95%CI: 0.02–3.34], but not in hospital-based case–control studies (HBCC). Through a sensitivity analysis, we did not identify any single study to strongly influence the results of our serum copper levels and cervical cancer risk. No publication bias was found in our analysis. In conclusion, our study provided significant evidence of higher serum copper levels in patients with cervical cancer than in controls, suggesting that serum copper exposure was a risk factor on cervical cancer.

Objective To evaluate the associations between dietary fiber intake and ovarian cancer risk. Methods A literature survey was conducted by searching the PubMed, Web of Science, and Wanfang Med Online databases up to March 1st, 2018. The effect of dietary fiber intake on ovarian cancer risk was evaluated by calculating relative risks with 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) using Stata 12.0 software. Results A total of 17 articles with 149,177 participants including 7609 ovarian cancer patients were included in this analysis. The summarized relative risk for ovarian cancer in participants with the highest compared with the lowest fiber intake was 0.760 (95%CI=0.702–0.823), with no significant between-study heterogeneity ( I2=12.4%). Subgroup analysis according to study design demonstrated positive associations in both cohort studies and case-control studies. Moreover, the results were consistent among populations from America, Europe, and Asia. No publication bias was found by Egger’s test or funnel plots. Conclusion This meta-analysis concluded that a high intake of dietary fiber could significantly reduce the risk of ovarian cancer compared with a low fiber intake.

Abstract Background: Many epidemiologic studies have explored the association between age at last birth (ALB) and the risk of epithelial ovarian cancer, but the results remain controversial. Methods: A literature search was performed in PubMed, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and WanFang Med Online for relevant articles published up to April 2019. Pooled relative risks (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using a random-effect model. Dose–response relationship was assessed by restricted cubic spline model. Results: Thirteen articles with 19,959 cases and 2,451,071 participants were included in our meta-analysis, and we found that ALB was negatively associated with epithelial ovarian cancer. The pooled RR (95% CI) of epithelial ovarian cancer for the highest versus the lowest stratification of ALB was 0.77 (0.65–0.91). Furthermore, significantly negative associations were shown in case–control studies (RR: 0.73; 95% CI: 0.60–0.88), studies conducted in North America (RR: 0.71; 95% CI: 0.60–0.84), studies with adjustment for parity (RR: 0.76; 95%CI: 0.63–0.93), studies with adjustment for tubal ligation (RR: 0.74; 95% CI: 0.58–0.94), in the subgroup analysis. In dose–response analysis, the risk of epithelial ovarian cancer decreased nonlinearly with the increase of ALB, and the negative results become significant when ALB was 22.5 years old. Conclusion: This meta-analysis suggested that ALB was negatively associated with the risk of epithelial ovarian cancer. The risk of epithelial ovarian cancer decreased gradually with the ALB for women.

Introduction:Cytosolic glutathione S-transferase (GST) comprises multiple isoenzymes that catalyze reactions between glutathione and lipophilic compounds with electrophilic centers, resulting in the neutralization of toxic compounds, xenobiotics, and products of oxidative stress. Several studies have examined whether GST polymorphisms (GSTM1 null/present genotype, GSTT1 null/present genotype, and GSTP1 Ile105Val) represent risk factors for ovarian cancer, as they all may denote reduced enzyme activity. This meta-analysis aimed to examine the associations between the aforementioned polymorphisms and ovarian cancer risk.Methods:The MEDLINE database was searched up to September 2009 using the appropriate terms. Case-control studies with no mutually overlapping populations were selected. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) were appropriately derived from fixed-effects or random-effects models. Meta-regression with publication year was also performed.Results:Eight studies regarding GSTM1 null polymorphism status (2357 cases and 3044 controls), 6 studies concerning GSTT1 null polymorphism (1923 cases and 2759 controls), and 3 studies on GSTP1 Ile105Val were included in the meta-analysis. The GSTM1 null genotype was not associated with an increased risk for ovarian cancer (pooled OR, 1.031; 95% confidence interval, 0.867-1.226; random effects). The GSTT1 null genotype was not associated with an increased ovarian cancer risk (pooled OR, 0.934; 95% confidence interval, 0.804-1.086; random effects); similarly, no significant associations were demonstrated for GSTP1 Ile105Val.Conclusions:The examined GSTM1, GSTT1, and GSTP1 genotype polymorphisms do not seem to confer any additional risk for ovarian cancer. Given that the studies included in this meta-analysis involve mainly white populations, these results cannot be extrapolated on other populations, and additional data are needed for future race-specific analyses.

AbstractSedentary behaviour is an emerging risk factor for several site-specific cancers. Ovarian cancers are often detected at late disease stages and the role of sedentary behaviour as a modifiable risk factor potentially contributing to ovarian cancer risk has not been extensively examined. We systematically searched relevant databases from inception to February 2020 for eligible publications dealing with sedentary behaviour in relation to ovarian cancer risk. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis, calculating summary relative risks (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) using a random-effects model. We calculated the E-Value, a sensitivity analysis for unmeasured confounding. We tested for publication bias and heterogeneity. Seven studies (three prospective cohort studies and four case–control studies) including 2060 ovarian cancer cases were analysed. Comparing highest versus lowest levels of sedentary behaviour, the data indicated a statistically significant increase in the risk of ovarian cancer in relation to prolonged sitting time (RR = 1.29, 95% CI = 1.07–1.57). Sub-analyses of prospective cohort studies (RR = 1.33, 95% CI = 0.92–1.93) and case–control studies (RR = 1.28, 95% CI = 0.98–1.68) showed statistically non-significant results. Sensitivity analysis showed that an unmeasured confounder would need to be related to sedentary behaviour and ovarian cancer with a RR of 1.90 to fully explain away the observed RR of 1.29. Our analyses showed a statistically significant positive association between sedentary behaviour and ovarian cancer risk.

Background: The field of quantifying the association between the intake of vitamin C and risk of glioma still has conflicts. Thus, we performed a comprehensive meta-analysis to test the hypothesis that a high intake of vitamin C may be a protective effect on glioma risk. Methods: Pertinent studies were identified by a search in PubMed and Web of Knowledge up to June 2014. The random-effect model was used to combine study-specific results. Publication bias was estimated using Begg' funnel plot and Egger's regression asymmetry test. Results: Thirteen articles with 15 studies (2 cohort study and 13 case-control studies) involving 3,409 glioma cases about vitamin C intake and glioma risk were used in this meta-analysis. The combined relative risks (RRs) of glioma associated with vitamin C intake was 0.86 (95% CIs = 0.75-0.99). Overall, significant protective associations were also found in the American population (RRs = 0.85, 95% CIs = 0.73-0.98) and case-control studies (RRs = 0.80, 95% CIs = 0.69-0.93). No publication bias was found. Conclusions: Our analysis indicated that vitamin C intake might decrease the risk of glioma, especially among the Americans.

ObjectiveStudies investigating the association betweenmatrix metalloproteinase-1(MMP1) gene promoter 1607–base pair (bp) polymorphism and ovarian cancer risk have yielded conflicting results.MethodsWe therefore carried out a meta-analysis of 754 ovarian cancer cases and 1184 controls from 5 published case-control studies. The strength of the association betweenMMP11607-bp polymorphism and ovarian cancer susceptibility was calculated using pooled odds ratios (ORs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs).ResultsThe results suggest that no statistically significant associations exist betweenMMP11607-bp polymorphisms and ovarian cancer risk in all 4 genetic models (2G2G vs 1G1G: OR, 1.08; 95% CI, 0.81–1.43;P= 0.23; 1G2G vs 1G1G: OR, 1.06; 95% CI, 0.82–1.36;P= 0.15; 1G2G + 2G2G vs 1G1G: OR, 1.05; 95% CI, 0.83–1.34;P= 0.16; 2G2G vs 1G1G + 1G2G: OR, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.80–1.20;P= 0.84).ConclusionsIn summary, this meta-analysis showed that theMMP11607-bp polymorphism is not associated with ovarian cancer risk.
