Abstract This paper aims to introduce a simplified moment-rotation backbone model for exploring the nonlinear behavior of shallow foundations subjected to rocking. The model is developed based on parametric numerical investigations of rectangular footings on dense dry sand, taking advantage of a nonlinear macro-element model verified based on a set of experimental results. Empirical expressions are proposed for rocking stiffness degradation due to gravity loads and foundation rotation as a function of the factor of safety against vertical loads and aspect ratio of foundations. Similar to previous researches, the uplift reference rotation was introduced to explore a new closedform expression appropriate for normalizing the foundation response in a non-dimensional form. The proposed approach for stiffness degradation and nonlinear backbone model of rocking foundations aims to be simple, to minimize the dependence on the variable parameters, and to provide physically sound selections for engineering applications.

Abstract Coulomb friction has an influence on the behavior of numerous mechanical systems. Coulomb friction systems or dry friction systems are nonlinear in nature. This nonlinear behavior requires complex and time demanding analysis tools to capture the dynamics of these systems. Recently, efforts have been made to develop efficient analysis tools able to approximate the forced response of systems with dry friction. The objective of this paper is to introduce a methodology that assists in these efforts. In this method, the piecewise-linear nonlinear response is separated into individual linear responses that are coupled together through compatibility constraint equations. The new method is demonstrated on a number of systems of varying complexity. The results obtained by the new method are validated through the comparison with results obtained by time integration. The computational savings of the new method is also discussed.

The stability of thin-walled cylindrical shells under axial pressure is investigated. The results of both experiments and numerical simulations are presented. An appropriate finite element model is introduced that accounts not only for geometric imperfections but also for non-linearities. It is found that small geometrical imperfections within a given tolerance range have considerable negative effect on the buckling load compared to perfect geometry. Various post buckling shell shapes are possible, which depend on these imperfections. The experiments and simulations show a very good correlation.

In this paper, a nonlinear three-dimensional finite element model for super-long pile and soil interaction is established. In this model, contact elements are applied to simulate the nonlinear behavior of interaction of super-long pile and soil. A nonlinear elastic constitutive model for concrete is employed to analyze stress-strain relation of pile shaft under the axial load and the Duncan-Chang’s nonlinear constitutive model is used to reflect nonlinear and inelastic properties of soil. The side friction resistance, axial force, pile-tip resistance, and developing trend of soil plastic deformation are obtained and compared with measured results from static load tests. It is demonstrated that a super-long pile has the properties of degradation of side friction resistance and asynchronous action between side and pile-tip resistance, which is different from piles with a short to medium length.

In this article the finite element software was used to analyse the values for compressive strength of X-cor sandwich. During the analysis, the failure criteria and materials stiffness degradation rules of failure mechanisms were proposed. The failure processes and failure modes were also clarified. In the finite element model we used the distributions of failure elements to simulate the failure processes. Meanwhile the failure mechanisms of X-cor sandwich were explained. The finite element analysis indicates that the resin regions of Z-pin tips fail firstly and the Z-pins fail secondly. The dominant failure mode is the Z-pin elastic buckling and the propagation paths of failure elements are dispersive. Through contrast the finite element values and test results are consistent well and the error range is -7.6%~9.5%. Therefore the failure criteria and stiffness degradation rules are reasonable and the model can be used to predict the compressive strength of X-cor sandwich.

The double-sided fluid film force on the inner and outer ring surfaces of a floating ring bearing (FRB) creates strong nonlinear response characteristics such as coexistence of multiple orbits, Hopf bifurcation, Neimark-Sacker (N-S) bifurcation, and chaos in operations. An improved autonomous shooting with deflation algorithm is applied to a rigid rotor supported by FRBs for numerically analyzing its nonlinear behavior. The method enhances computation efficiency by avoiding previously found solutions in the numerical-based search. The solution manifold for phase state and period is obtained using arc-length continuation. It was determined that the FRB-rotor system has multiple response states near Hopf and N-S bifurcation points, and the bifurcation scenario depends on the ratio of floating ring length and diameter (L/D). Since multiple responses coexist under the same operating conditions, simulation of jumps between two stable limit cycles from potential disturbance such as sudden base excitation is demonstrated. In addition, this paper investigates chaotic motions in the FRB-rotor system, utilizing four different approaches, strange attractor, Lyapunov exponent, frequency spectrum, and bifurcation diagram. A numerical case study for quenching the large amplitude motion by adding unbalance force is provided and the result shows synchronization, i.e., subsynchronous frequency components are suppressed. In this research, the fluid film forces on the FRB are determined by applying the finite element method while prior work has utilized a short bearing approximation. Simulation response comparisons between the short bearing and finite bearing models are discussed.

This work presents a new macro-element model to predict the behaviour of Suction Embedded Plate Anchors (SEPLAs) for floating offshore structures during keying and loading stages. Differently from previously published models for anchors, this new model is characterised by (i) a non-associated plastic potential with the aim of improving the prediction of anchor trajectory for the whole displacement domain and for a large range of padeye offsets; and (ii) by a strain-hardening rule enabling to predict the force and displacement mobilisation from the early stages of the keying process. The model was calibrated against LDFE analyses and compared with a broad set of LDFE and centrifuge tests results. The model proves capable of reproducing anchor rotation and displacement with good accuracy for a wide range of padeye offsets and distinct studies from the literature.

This paper describes numerical analyses on low volume roads (LVRs) using a nonlinear three-dimensional (3D) finite element model (FEM). Various pavement scenarios are analyzed to investigate the effects of pavement layer thicknesses, traffic loads, and material properties on pavement responses, such as surface deflection and subgrade strain. Each scenario incorporates a different combination of wheel/axle configurations and pavement geomaterial properties to analyze the nonlinear behavior of thinly surfaced asphalt pavement. In this numerical study, nonlinear stress-dependent models are employed in the base and subgrade layers to properly characterize pavement geomaterial behavior. Finite element analysis results are then described in terms of the effects of the asphalt pavement thickness, wheel/axle configurations, and geomaterial properties on critical pavement responses. Conclusions are drawn by the comparison of the nonlinear pavement responses in the base and subgrade in association with the effects of multiple wheel/axle load interactions. Santrauka Straipsnyje aprašoma skaitinė mažo intensyvumo kelių analizė, taikant netiesinį—erdvinį baigtinių elementų modelį. Skirtingi dangų paviršiaus variantai analizuojami siekiant ištirti, kokiąįtaką kelio dangos elgsenai, t. y. poslinkiams ir kelio pagrindo deformacijoms, turi dangų sluoksnių storiai, eismo apkrovos ir medžiagų savybės. Kiekvienas kelio dangos variantas turi skirtingas ratų arba ašies ir geometrinių savybių formas, kad būtų galima išanalizuoti netiesinę plonos asfalto dangos paviršiaus elgseną. Šioje skaitinėje analizėje nagrinėjami netiesiniai įtempių modeliai, kurie buvo taikomi pagrindo sluoksniams, siekiant tinkamai apibūdinti geometrinę kelio dangos elgseną. Baigtinių elementų analizės rezultatai toliau nagrinėjami atsižvelgiant į asfalto dangos storį ar ašies formą ir geometrines savybes, priklausomai nuo kritinės kelio dangos būklės. Išvados buvo gautos lyginant netiesines kelių dangos priklausomybes pagrindo sluoksnyje, atsižvelgiant į jų sąveiką su daugkartine ratų apkrova.
