Abstract In this paper, we consider an energy-harvesting (EH) relay network composing of multiple sources, a destination and multiple EH decode-and-forward (DF) relays. The EH relays all equip with a power splitter to divide the received signal power into two parts, one for information decoding and the remaining for signal relaying. The power splitting ratio (PSR) depicts the trade-off between the relaying energy and decoding energy. We propose an optimal power splitting and joint source-relay selection (OPS-JSRS) scheme where the optimal power-splitting ratio is obtained and the best source-relay pair is selected to transmit the message. For the purpose of comparison, we examine the optimal power splitting and round-robin (OPS-RR) scheme and the traditional power splitting and joint source-relay selection (TPS-JSRS) scheme. The exact and asymptotic closed-form expressions of outage probability for OPS-RR, TPS-JSRS and OPS-JSRS schemes are derived. Numerical results show that OPS-JSRS scheme is better than OPS-RR and TPS-JSRS schemes in terms of outage probability, explaining the superiority of the proposed OPS-JSRS scheme. Additionally, outage probability performance of OPS-JSRS scheme can be improved by increasing the number of sources and relays.

A joint resource allocation algorithm to minimize the system outage probability is proposed for a decode-and-forward (DF) two-way relay network with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) under a total power constraint. In this network, the two sources nodes exchange information with the help of a passive relay, which is assumed to help the two source nodes’ communication without consuming its own energy by exploiting an energy-harvesting protocol, the power splitting (PS) protocol. An optimization framework to jointly optimize power allocation (PA) at the source nodes and PS at the relay is developed. Since the formulated joint optimization problem is non-convex, the solution is developed in two steps. First, the conditionally optimal PS ratio at the relay node for a given PA ratio is explored; then, the closed-form of the optimal PA in the sense of minimizing the system outage probability with instantaneous channel state information (CSI) is derived. Analysis shows that the optimal design depends on the channel condition and the rate threshold. Simulation results are obtained to validate the analytical results. Comparison with three existing schemes shows that the proposed optimized scheme has the minimum system outage probability.

In recent years, harvesting energy from radio frequency (RF) signals has drawn significant research interest as a promising solution to solve the energy problem. In this paper, we analyze the effect of the interference noise on the wireless energy harvesting performance of a decode-and-forward (DF) relaying network. In this analysis, the energy and information are transferred from the source to the relay nodes in the delay-limited transmission and Delay-tolerant transmission modes by two methods: i) time switching protocol and ii) power splitting protocol. Firstly, due to the constraint of the wireless energy harvesting at the relay node, the analytical mathematical expressions of the achievable throughput, outage probability and ergodic capacity of both schemes were proposed and demonstrated. After that, the effect of various system parameters on the system performance is rigorously studied with closed-form expressions for system throughput, outage probability, and ergodic capacity. Finally, the analytical results are also demonstrated by Monte-Carlo simulation. The results show that the analytical mathematical and simulated results agree with each other. This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/), which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited.

In the last time, the system performance of the energy harvesting relay network has been considered in many studies. In this paper, we propose and investigate the outage probability (OP) of the Decode-and-Forward (DF) Energy Harvesting (EH) Full-Duplex (FD) Relaying network in Power Splitting Protocol (PS) using MRC Technique with the presence of the direct link. In the first stage, the integral form of the OP is derived in two cases with and without the presence of the direct link. After that, we analyze the influence of main system parameters on the OP and comparison between two cases with and without the presence of the direct link. Finally, the results show that all simulation and analytical results match well with each other based on the Monte Carlo verification simulation.

Wireless energy harvesting has emerged as an efficient solution to prolong the lifetime of wireless networks composed of energy-constrained nodes. In this paper, we consider a multipoint-to-multipoint relay network, where multiple source nodes communicate with their respective destination nodes via intermediate energy-constrained decode-and-forward (DF) relay. The performance of two different transmission modes, namely, delay tolerant and delay nontolerant, is studied. Based on power-splitting relaying protocol (PSR), optimal energy harvesting and distribution schemes for both transmission modes are provided. In addition, for more realistic and practical analysis, we consider a nonlinear energy conversion model for energy harvesting at the relay node. Our numerical results provide useful insights into different system parameters of a nonlinear energy harvesting-based multipair DF relay network.

In this research, we investigate a hybrid time-switching relay (TSR)–power-splitting relay (PSR) alternate energy harvesting (EH) relaying network over the Rician fading channels. For this purpose, the amplify-and-forward (AF) mode is considered for the alternative hybrid time TSR–PSR. The system model consists of one source, one destination and two alternative relays for signal transmission from the source to the destination. In the first step, the exact and asymptotic expressions of the outage probability and the symbol errors ratio (SER) are derived. Then, the influence of all system parameters on the system performance is investigated, and the Monte Carlo simulation verifies all results. Finally, the system performances of TSR–PSR, TSR, and PSR cases are compared in connection with all system parameters.

This paper studies the joint impact of simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) and nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) to the cooperative relay (CoR) network where direct links exist. Over Nakagami-m fading environments, the near users employ decode-and-forward (DF) and energy harvesting (EH) to assist the transmission from the source to the far users. Exploiting the time-switching protocol (TSP) and power-splitting protocol (PSP) to the CoR-based NOMA system, analytical results for the outage probability are derived, and the corresponding throughput is obtained. Comparative results show that the PSP outperforms the TSP at low transmit power, while at high-transmit-power regime, the TSP provides similar performance as the PSP.

In this article, we investigated the secrecy performance of a three-hop relay network system with Power Splitting (PS) and Energy Harvesting (EH). In the presence of one eavesdropper, a signal is transferred from source to destination with the help of a relay. The source signal transmits in full-duplex (FD) mood, jamming the relay transfer signals to the destination. The relay and source employ Time Switching (TS) and Energy Harvesting (EH) techniques to obtain the power from the power beacon. In this study, we compared the Secrecy Rate of two Cooperative Schemes, Amplify and Forward (AF) and Decode and Forward (DF), for both designed systems with the established EH and PS system. The Secrecy Rate was improved by 50.5% in the AF scheme and by 44.2% in the DF scheme between the relay and eavesdropper at 40 m apart for the proposed system in EH and PS. This simulation was performed using the Monto Carlo method in MATLAB.

This paper analyzes the performance of a multi-user multihop relay network using a low complexity decentralized relay selection (DRS) scheme for decode-and-forward cooperative networks. We carry out a rigorous diversity order analysis, with Nakagami- m fading and pathloss and show that the DRS scheme achieves full diversity while maintaining a complexity that is quadratic in the number of users, quadratic in the number of relays and independent of the number of hops. For a special case of two-user networks we derive exact closed-form expressions for the outage probability by considering the order statistics. Furthermore, we extend our analysis to consider interfering relay networks and derive an accurate lower bound on the outage of an arbitrary network user. Based on the lower bound we also show how the outage probability saturates in the high signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio regime. Extensive numerical examples are used to illustrate the accuracy of the analysis and to highlight the use of the DRS scheme in multi-user multihop relay networks. © 2018 IEEE. In this paper, we consider one-way relay with energy harvesting system based on power beacon (PB), in which the relay node harvests transmitted power from the PB station to forward signals to destination. We also analyse the relay network model with amplify-and-forward (AF) protocol for information cooperation and Power Splitting-based Relaying (PSR) protocol for power transfer. In particular, the outage probability and optimal energy harvesting (EH) power splitting fraction of novel scheme in are presented. We obtain analytical closed-form expression of optimal energy harvesting (EH) power splitting fraction to minimize the outage probability of system. Using numerical and analytical simulations, the performances of different cases are presented and discussed.
