Abstract Functionality of wood has to evolve with time to adapt to the emerging needs in society. In this work, endowing electrical conductivity to the insulating wood by adding graphene into the wood matrix to form a conductive wood-graphene composite (conductive wood) via a facile and environmentally benign fabrication technique. The rationale of fabricating conductive wood is of two folds: (1) The high suitability of wood as a renewable matrix due to its porous network and mechanically robust monolithic structure. (2) The need to explore reasonable strategy to adequately translate the properties of graphene from microscopic level to macroscopic level. The conductive wood is able to preserve both the natural features of wood (to function as mechanical scaffold) and the conductivity of graphene. An outstanding electrical conductivity (volume resistivity of 36.7 Ω·cm) is achieved for the conductive wood, while it can maintain a low bulk density of 0.44 g cm-1. More significantly, the conductive wood demonstrates a highly three-dimensional anisotropic conductivity that makes it a highly versatile conductor in various applications. Hence, this lightweight conductive wood may contribute towards a great electronic revolution and as an encouraging strategy to repurpose the function of wood in this new era.

The histology of the endometrium has traditionally been established by observation of two-dimensional (2D) pathological sections. However, because human endometrial glands exhibit coiling and branching morphology, it is extremely difficult to obtain an entire image of the glands by 2D observation. In recent years, the development of three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of serial pathological sections by computer and whole-mount imaging technology using tissue clearing methods with high-resolution fluorescence microscopy has enabled us to observe the 3D histoarchitecture of tissues. As a result, 3D imaging has revealed that human endometrial glands form a plexus network in the basalis, similar to the rhizome of grass, whereas mouse uterine glands are single branched tubular glands. This review summarizes the relevant literature on the 3D structure of mouse and human endometrium and discusses the significance of the rhizome structure in the human endometrium and the expected role of understanding the 3D tissue structure in future applications to systems biology.

Three dimensional graphene foam incorporated into epoxy matrix greatly enhance its thermal conductivity (up to 1.52 W mK−1) at low graphene foam loading (5.0 wt%), over an eight-fold enhancement in comparison with that of neat epoxy.

Pericyclic reactions are known for their exquisite selectivity and, in many cases, the formation of multiple chiral centers with a high degree of control. With the advent of accurate computational tools, this control was translated into predictability, and the design and exploitation of this set of reactions opened a new era in organic synthesis. Suddenly, highly complex and profusely decorated polycyclic structures were accessible in relatively short reaction sequences. Out interest in exploring the limits of application of the rules that govern these reactions with ironfist led us to discover a range of eye opening post-transitional effects that are key to ultimately understand reactivity at a microscopic level.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to study the mechanical, tribological and electrical properties of the copper-graphene (Cu-Gn) composites fabricated by a novel rapid tooling technique consist of three-dimensional printing and ultrasonic-assisted pressureless sintering (UAPS). Design/methodology/approach Four different Cu-Gn compositions with 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 1.5 per cent of graphene were fabricated using an amalgamation of three-dimensional printing and UAPS. The polymer 3d printed parts were used to prepare mould cavity and later the UAPS process was used to sinter Cu-Gn powder to acquire free-form shape. The density, hardness, wear rate, coefficient of friction and electrical conductivity were evaluated for the different compositions of graphene and compared with the pure copper. Besides, the comparison was performed with the conventional method. Findings Cu-Gn composites revealed excellent wear properties due to higher hardness, and the lubrication provided by the graphene. The electrical conductivity of the fabricated Cu-Gn composites started increasing initially but decreased afterwards with increasing the content of graphene. The UAPS fabricated composites outperformed the conventional method manufactured samples with better properties such as density, hardness, wear rate, coefficient of friction and electrical conductivity due to homogeneous mixing of metal particles and graphene. Originality/value The fabrication of Cu-Gn composite freeform shapes was found to be difficult using conventional methods. The novel technique using a combination of polymer three-dimensional printing and UAPS as rapid tooling was introduced for the fabrication of freeform shapes of Cu-Gn composites and mechanical, tribological and electrical properties were studied. The method can be used to fabricate optimized complex Cu-Gn structures with improved wear and electrical applications.
