Two experiments were conducted concurrently to assess the effect of different levels of fresh and dry Tridax procumbens on performance of layers. 720 Hbbard layers were grouped into 6 treatments of 60 birds per treatment in each experiment. The treatment in consisted of 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10% inclusion rates of fresh and dry Tridax procumbens in first and second experiments, respectively. Tridax leaves, irrespective of the form and level had no significantly (P > 0.05) effect on egg production, egg weight and feed intake. Inclusion of Tridax either in fresh or dry form increased (P < 0.05) yolk colour, while the yolk colour intensity was more pronounced (P < 0.05) in the dry Tridax than the fresh Tridax experiment.

The study was conducted in the poultry field in the Animal Production Department/ College of Agriculture and Forestry/ University of Mosul, for the period from 18/ 2/ 2020 until 13/ 4/ 2020. The experiment aimed to study the effect of replacement different levels of sesame meal (SSM) as a protein source to replace soybean meal (SBM) on the productive performance and reproductive of laying quail, 360 quail birds (240 females and 120 males) were used, at the age of 49 days, distributed randomly into five treatments, each treatment with eight replicates, ( 9 birds in each replicate 6 females and 3 males). The treatments were as follows: the first was the control (0% SSM), the second, third, fourth, and the fifth replaced SSM by SBM with level (25, 50, 75 and 100%) respectively, feed and water was ad libitum during the trial period of 8 weeks. The results of the statistical analysis showed there is a significant statistical difference at a level (P≤0.05) in the fifth treatment (100% SSM) as compared to control and other treatments in total egg number, average egg weight, total egg mass, Hen day egg production percentage (% HD), feed intake, feed conversion ratio, fertility, and hatching percentage of total eggs, average weight of hatched chicks, and a significant increase in the embryo mortality. The results also showed a significant decrease at a level (P≤0.05) in the feed intake for the fourth treatment (75% SSM) compared to the control, while no significant differences were observed for the other treatments in all the studied traits. The results of this study showed the possibility of using sesame meal as a protein source at (75%) to replace soybean meal in laying quail bird diets.

ABSTRACTThe microbiota ofDrosophila melanogasterhas a substantial impact on host physiology and nutrition. Some effects may involve vitamin provisioning, but the relationships between microbe-derived vitamins, diet, and host health remain to be established systematically. We explored the contribution of microbiota in supplying sufficient dietary thiamine (vitamin B1) to supportD. melanogasterat different stages of its life cycle. Using chemically defined diets with different levels of available thiamine, we found that the interaction of thiamine concentration and microbiota did not affect the longevity of adultD. melanogaster. Likewise, this interplay did not have an impact on egg production. However, we determined that thiamine availability has a large impact on offspring development, as axenic offspring were unable to develop on a thiamine-free diet. Offspring survived on the diet only when the microbiota was present or added back, demonstrating that the microbiota was able to provide enough thiamine to support host development. Through gnotobiotic studies, we determined thatAcetobacter pomorum, a common member of the microbiota, was able to rescue development of larvae raised on the no-thiamine diet. Further, it was the only microbiota member that produced measurable amounts of thiamine when grown on the thiamine-free fly medium. Its close relativeAcetobacter pasteurianusalso rescued larvae; however, a thiamine auxotrophic mutant strain was unable to support larval growth and development. The results demonstrate that theD. melanogastermicrobiota functions to provision thiamine to its host in a low-thiamine environment.IMPORTANCEThere has been a long-standing assumption that the microbiota of animals provides their hosts with essential B vitamins; however, there is not a wealth of empirical evidence supporting this idea, especially for vitamin B1(thiamine). To determine whether this assumption is true, we usedDrosophila melanogasterand chemically defined diets with different thiamine concentrations as a model. We found that the microbiota does provide thiamine to its host, enough to allow the development of flies on a thiamine-free diet. The power of theDrosophila-microbiota system allowed us to determine that one microbiota member in particular,Acetobacter pomorum, is responsible for the thiamine provisioning. Thereby, our study verifies this long-standing hypothesis. Finally, the methods used in this work are applicable for interrogating the underpinnings of other aspects of the tripartite interaction between diet, host, and microbiota.

A trial was conducted to evaluate the requirement of digestible lysine at various protein levels in the diet of WLH layers (BV-300) from 25-44 weeks of age. Layers (528) were fed with diets containing two protein levels i.e. 13.36 and 15.78 % each with 5 % concentration variations of lysine (0.50, 0.55, 0.60, 0.65, and 0.70) and a control with 17 % CP and 0.70 % lysine. Each diet was fed to six replicates of eight birds. Egg production, feed intake, body weight were not influenced either by the concentration of lysine or by level of protein in diet. Increased (P d” 0.05) egg weight and egg mass were observed with increasing lysine in diets. Better feed efficiency was observed with increasing lysine concentration. It can be concluded that WLH layers require approximately 0.65% lysine with 13.36% CP or 0.63% lysine with 15.78% CP (i.e. 598.80 vs 570 mg/h/day) in diet.

The study was conducted on Isa Brown hybrid hens at the age of 49-57 weeks. The effect of using different levels of share of raw soybean of two varieties in mixtures for feeding hens on egg production, body weight, food consumption, the occurrence of defective eggs, mortality and the relative weight of the pancreas was studied. The possibility of replacing the heat-treated soybean grains, varieties Lana, with reduced trypsin inhibitor (TI) and Lydia with a standard level of TI, with raw soybean grains was examined. The research was conducted on the principle of two factorial experiment 2 x 4 (2 varieties x 4 levels of share of raw grain in the mixture) with a total of 8 diet treatments and 4 replicates per each treatment. In the first 5 weeks of the study, the differences in the number of eggs produced under the influence of tested factors were not significant. Under the influence of soybean varieties, the level of share of raw soybean and interaction of the studied factors showed significant differences (p<0.01) after 53 week of age. The use of soy with lower TI in the diet for laying hens resulted in a significantly greater capacity compared to standard variety. The share of raw soybean grains of 8 % in the mixtures significantly reduced the number of eggs laid. The differences in body weights, food consumption, occurrence of defective eggs and the relative weight of the pancreas were not significantly influenced by the studied factors or by their interaction effect.

Abstract This work aimed to evaluate the sensory acceptance by children of muffins containing different levels of jaboticaba skin flour. It also aimed to determine the physicochemical composition of the traditional product and compare it with that containing the highest level of jaboticaba skin flour showing acceptance similar to that of the traditional muffin. Five muffin formulations containing different levels of jaboticaba skin flour were prepared: 0% (standard), 4.5%, 9%, 13.5% and 18%. A group of 65 untrained tasters of both genders, aged from 7 to 10, took part in the sensory evaluation. The moisture, ash, protein, lipid, carbohydrate, calorie and dietary fibre levels were evaluated. The samples presented no significant alterations ( p > 0.05) for the attributes of appearance, aroma and colour. The formulations containing 0% and 4.5%, received the highest scores (p < 0.05) for flavour, texture and overall acceptance as compared to those with 13.5% and 18% jaboticaba skin flour. The sample with 9% was the one with the highest level of jaboticaba skin flour with acceptance similar to that of the traditional muffins. Higher moisture, ash and dietary fibre levels and lower lipid and protein levels were detected in the formulation with 9%, when compared to the traditional muffins, but there were no significant changes in the carbohydrate and calorie contents. It was concluded that a level of up to 9% jaboticaba skin flour in the muffins was well accepted by the child tasters, achieving a sensory acceptance similar to that of the traditional product and with good commercial potential.

1. The data relating to 16 multi-location trials involving several varieties of egg-laying chickens per trial have been analysed to obtain estimates of variety × location (genotype-environment) interactions for rearing and laying mortality, hen-month and hen-housed egg production and 32-week egg weight. Significant interactions were found in about a third of the trials for all five traits though in only two cases did the interaction variance account for more than 20% of the total variance.2. Genetic correlations for varieties between locations have been calculated as 0·49 for rearing mortality, 0·50 for laying mortality, 0·72 for hen-month production, 0·76 for hen-housed production and 0·91 for egg weight. These are in close agreement with previous published estimates.3. The between-and within-variety components of variance have been calculated for each trait on each location separately. The regressions within trials and pooled values of the components on the mean level of all varieties on the location have been calculated. For hen-month production the pooled regres-son of the within-variety component on mean was negative, whilst for all other traits the pooled regressions were positive. The pooled regressions of the between-variety components on mean were all positive. It is suggested that this information indicates that comparison of varieties for single traits should be carried out on locations favourable for maximum expression of the trait. The difficulties which variety comparisons, for several traits having different optimum management regimes, would cause and the need for a more intensive investigation of the conditions conducive to genotype-environment interactions are stressed.
