Abstract Older adults are more vulnerable to neighborhood physical and social conditions due to longer exposure, increased vulnerability, changing spatial use, and a greater reliance on access to community sources of integration. Previous research has demonstrated an association between neighborhood environments and cognitive function in older adults. However, most studies were cross-sectional, focused on western countries, and did not examine potential moderating factors. This study examined gender and age variations in the relationship between neighborhood environments and cognitive decline in middle and old age in a developing country that is experiencing rapid population aging and rising prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Using data from a nationally representative sample of adults aged 45 years and older from the three waves of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS 2011-2015), this study estimated multilevel growth curve models for the effects of neighborhood environments on cognitive decline separately for men and women and for those aged 45 to 64 and those aged 65 and above. It showed that the cross-sectional effect of outdoor facility and longitudinal effect of handicapped access were more significant for men, but the cross-sectional effect of community social participation and longitudinal effects of raining days, number of disasters, employment service, and community SES were more significant for women. The cross-sectional effect of infrastructure advantages and longitudinal effects of employment service and old age income support were more significant for adults aged 65 and over. These findings suggest that community-level interventions may be more beneficial for older women.

Summary: A new set of data concerning the pattern of suicide in India between 1991-1997 are presented. Suicide rates rose over this period despite a small decline in the Indian suicide rate in 1995 and 1996. It was found that between 1995 and 1997 there was a modest fall in the suicide rates among under 29-year-olds of both sexes, and an increase among those 30 years and older. The pattern of suicides in India is bimodal: the incidence of suicides is highest for those in the 30-44-year-old category of both sexes and tends to decline in higher age categories. Suicide rates were nearly equal for young women and men, a contrast with the pattern of suicide sex ratios in eight developed countries.

Abstract Background There is a scarcity of data concerning the prevalence and pattern of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment needs in Syrian refugee. In this study, extra and intra-oral features of malocclusion and the dental health component of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) were reported. Methods Examination of 606 Syrian children/adolescents refugees attending Zaatari clinic was carried out (males = 280, females = 326, mean age = 11.84 ± 2.1 years). Subjects not within the age limit, with a history of orthodontic treatment, or with craniofacial anomalies were excluded. Both extra and intra-oral features of malocclusion were assessed. Intra-oral features included inter- and intra-arch occlusal characteristics: crowding, spacing, crossbite, overjet, overbite, molar and canine relationship, incisor relationship, and centerline shift. In addition, the dental health component (DHC) of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) was recorded. Gender and age variations in malocclusion characteristics and IOTN grading were tested using chi-square and nonparametric tests respectively (P < 0.05). Results The prevalence of malocclusion was 83.8% (52.6% class I, 24.2% class II, 7% class III). The most common features of malocclusion were crowding (71.1%) followed by centerline shift (52.1%), increased overjet (36.1%), high vertical proportions (34%) and deep overbite (31.2%); there were significant gender and age differences for a number of occlusal traits. The prevalence of moderate to severe need for orthodontic treatment was 67.7%. Conclusions This study provides baseline data on the prevalence of malocclusion in Syrian refugee children/adolescents in Zaatari camp where data concerning oral health of this population are lacking. The prevalence of orthodontic treatment need was high warranting the need for a comprehensive interceptive orthodontic program to prevent increasing oral health problems in the future. This high burden of oral diseases has a negative financial impact on the hosting country which can be reduced through public health interventions and implementing community-based dental healthcare for this underprivileged population.

Objectives: To evaluate urinary stone composition in our institution, its gender and age, including variations and the evolution in the last 7 years. Material and Methods: The authors reviewed all urinary stone analysis performed since January 2009 to September 2015 in our hospital – Centro Hospitalar do Tâmega e Sousa, Penafiel, Portugal. Patients were stratified by gender, age and stone composition analyzing the evolution of stone composition in different years. The stone analysis method was infrared spectroscopy. Results: From 302 valid stone analysis reports, 55,3% were female and 44,7% were male patients. Mean patient age was 51±14 years old. A total of 7 different mineral components were identified. 51,6% (n=156) of all the stones had Calcium Oxalate, 41% (n=124) had Calcium Phosphate (33% of Apatite form), 37,7% (n=114) had Uric Acid, 22,1% (n=67) had Ammonium Urate, 9,6% (n=29) had Magnesium Ammonium Phosphate, 6,3% (n=19) had Sodium Urate, and 1,3% (n=4) had Cystine in its composition. Only 30,4% of stones had a single chemical compound. Of these 56% were pure stones of Calcium Oxalate, and 31% were pure stone of Uric Acid. The most frequent mixed stone was Calcium Oxalate + Calcium Phosphate (Apatite) followed by Uric Acid + Ammonium Urate comprehending 45% and 27% of all mixed stones respectively. Related to the ethology we divided stones into 3 groups, pure non-infection, pure infection, and mixed with component of infection, and the prevalence was 37,7%, 4,3% and 57,9% respectively. The distribution between genders was similar and the highest difference was in the Ammonium Urate compound with 28% prevalence in male and 17% in women. (p=0,379)
Patients after 50 years old had more prevalence of Uric Acid component accounting for 49% of their stones.(p<0,001) . Along the 7 years of study we identified a significant reduction in the prevalence of mixed stones with component of infection, gradually decreasing from 89,6% in 2009 to 27% in 2015. Conclusions: Calcium Oxalate calculus were the most prevalent, but this difference was not as important as in other studies worldwide. This study highlights the importance of the development of National and European database to report all regional stone composition variations.

While several studies have attested the presence of systematic gender and age variations in pharmacists’ satisfaction with their jobs, only a few of them have considered both classifications simultaneously. None have done so while systematically examining multiple facets of practitioners’ work. This article estimated U.S. pharmacists’ satisfaction levels with various facets of their work, compared them simultaneously between genders and among age groups, and tested for the presence of gender–age interaction effects. The study was based on self-reported survey data collected from 701 pharmacists (31.0% response rate). Mean and standard deviation values for 18 indices related to pharmacists’ work were calculated. When age groups were controlled, female pharmacists expressed overall higher levels of satisfaction with their job than male pharmacists; they also expressed greater satisfaction with multiple specific facets and with the profession, as well as greater workload and stress than male pharmacists. The findings revealed few significant differences among age groups and a limited gender–age interaction effect for pharmacists’ satisfaction with key facets of their work. These findings should contribute to the development and refinement of rational criteria for increasing sources of satisfaction in pharmacy settings.

Purpose The purpose of this letter is to compare results by Skuk et al. (2020) with Meister et al. (2016) and to point to a potential general influence of stimulus type. Conclusion Our conclusion is that presenting sentences may give cochlear implant recipients the opportunity to use timbre cues for voice perception. This might not be the case when presenting brief and sparse stimuli such as consonant–vowel–consonant or single words, which were applied in the majority of studies.
