Olanzapine is an antipsychotic drug and has been reported to induce impaired glucose tolerance leading to high blood glucose levels. In oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT), methanolic extract of steamed cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata) (MEBO) leaves have been shown to reduce elevated blood glucose levels in glucose-loaded mice. It was thus of interest to determine whether MEBO leaves can ameliorate olanzapineinduced impaired glucose tolerance in mice, which have been administered olanzapine for 28 days. Impaired glucose tolerance was measured through OGTT in mice. Olanzapine (28 days)-administered mice showed elevated blood glucose in OGTT. MEBO leaves showed significant reduction of blood glucose level in OGTT in mice (compared to vehicle or olanzapine treated mice for 28 days, Groups 2 and 3, respectively) both when administered for 28 days along with olanzapine, as well when administered 60 min prior to glucose loading in OGTT (positive control glibenclamide administered at 10 mg/kg). A single dose of MEBO (400 mg/kg) was used based on previous studies. Thus, MEBO leaves can be beneficial for improving glucose tolerance and reduce blood glucose levels in olanzapine-induced elevated blood glucose levels.

Abstract We describe the case of a 54-year-old Caucasian Italian male experiencing episodes of hypoglycemia, occurring mainly after meals. He had never been exposed to insulin and was taking ramipril, flecainide and acetylsalicylic acid. An oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) showed high blood glucose levels diagnostic for diabetes mellitus at 120 min and hypoglycemia with inappropriately high insulin levels at 240 min. The 72-h fasting test, abdominal computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography-CT were normal. Insulin autoantibodies were positive at high titers, prompting a diagnosis of insulin autoimmune syndrome (IAS). The patient was advised to take frequent, small meals and thus achieved a good control of his hypoglycemic symptoms. After 18 months of this dietary management, his insulin autoantibody levels decreased considerably but remained detectable. During an OGTT, his blood glucose levels at 120 min were now indicative of an impaired glucose tolerance rather than diabetes, and there was improvement in the glucose nadir. The patient had no other clinical or latent autoimmune diseases. Here we discuss the main features of IAS (also known as Hirata’s disease) and review the cases of IAS reported in Italy to date.

<p>The purpose of this study is to evaluate the hypoglycaemic properties and preliminary phytochemical screening of <em>Uveria chamae</em>. The hypoglycaemic properties of <em>Uveria chamae</em> was assessed on normoglycaemic rat that received single dose of the extract at 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight and blood glucose levels estimated at 2, 4, and 6 hours (single dose study). The hypoglycaemic property of the extract was also evaluated in normoglycemic rats by oral glucose tolerance test. Phytochemical screening of the extract for the presence of secondary metabolites was performed with standard methods. The extract showed a significant (p&lt;0.05) reduction in blood glucose levels at 2h and 6h compared to control.  The oral glucose tolerance test  result also showed a significant decrease (p&lt;0.05) in blood glucose levels . The study showed that the extract, <em>Uveria chamae</em> has hypoglycaemic properties which may be accounted for by the presence of the phytochemicals.</p><p> </p>

Glycaemic control, in particular at postprandial period, has a key role in prevention of different diseases, including diabetes and cardiovascular events. Previous studies suggest that postprandial high blood glucose levels (BGL) can lead to an oxidative stress status, which is associated with metabolic alterations. Cinnamon powder has demonstrated a beneficial effect on postprandial glucose homeostasis in animals and human models. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of cinnamon tea (C. burmannii) on postprandial capillary blood glucose level on nondiabetic adults. Participants were given oral glucose tolerance test either with or without cinnamon tea in a randomized clinical trial. The data revealed that cinnamon tea administration slightly decreased postprandial BGL. Cinnamon tea ingestion also results in a significantly lower postprandial maximum glucose concentration and variation of maximum glucose concentration (p< 0.05). Chemical analysis showed that cinnamon tea has a high antioxidant capacity, which may be due to its polyphenol content. The present study provides evidence that cinnamon tea, obtained fromC. burmannii, could be beneficial for controlling glucose metabolism in nondiabetic adults during postprandial period.

Background: Emerging patterns in epidemiological transitions have led to increased risk for Non-Communicable Diseases and infectious conditions globally. Diabetes mellitus (DM) in a population is one such risk factor that could lead to the development of Tuberculosis (TB) due to weakened immune functions in affected persons, with implications for mortality. If not diagnosed early, DM also leads to poor treatment outcomes in TB. Objective: To assess the prevalence of DM and impaired glucose tolerance (pre-diabetes) among newly diagnosed tuberculosis cases in Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area of Ogun State, Nigeria. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 100 newly diagnosed Pulmonary TB patients in ljebu-Ode LGA. The patients were selected from four health facilities and were screened for elevated Fasting Blood Glucose levels using a laboratory spectrophotometer (glucose oxidase method). Results: The mean age of the 100 study participants was 33 years (± 9.82), with ages within 19 -62 years. Eleven (11.0%) had elevated blood glucose levels suggestive of DM, while 20 (20.0%) had impaired fasting blood glucose levels. Among these 31 patients, 18 (58.0%) were males while 13 (42.0%) were females. The modal ages were within 20-39 years. Conclusion: Screening for DM by healthcare providers should be routinely conducted before commencing TB patients on treatment. This will aid early detection, improve treatment outcomes of TB and prevent mortality among patients with these co-morbidities.

Abstract: Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) is one of many herbal medicine that have been used worldwide to prevent and treat diabetes mellitus. This research aimed to evaluate the effect of garlic bulbs extract administration on elevated blood glucose levels on Wistar rats (R. norvegicus) induced by alloxan. The subject in this research were male Wistar rats with total of 15 samples divided into 5 groups, consisting of one negative control group, one positive control group who were induce by 130 mg/kgBW of alloxan that cause the Rats in conditions of hyperglycemic, and three groups of Rats were given okra extract with dose of 0.375 ml/100 gBW of rat, 0.75 ml/100 gBW of rat , and 1.5 ml/100 gBW of rat. Blood glucose levels was measured on day zero, day one and day two every thirty minutes on 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, and every six hours on 0, 6, 12, 18, and 24. Data from the measurement showed that 0.375 ml/100 gBW, 0.75 ml/100 gBW , and 1.5 ml/100 gBW of okra extract can’t reduce elevated blood glucose levels on Wistar rats.Keywords: Abelmoschus esculentus, okra, blood glucose levels, alloxan Abstrak: Buah Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) diyakini masyarakat sebagai salah satu tanaman obat yang mampu mencegah dan mengobati penyakit diabetes. Subjek penelitian berupa tikus Wistar berjumlah 15 ekor yang dibagi dalam 5 kelompok, terdiri atas satu kelompok kontrol negatif, satu kelompok kontrol positif yang diberi aloksan dengan dosis 130 mg/kgBB yang menyebabkan tikus Wistar dalam keadaan hiperglikemik yang kemudian diinsuksi insulin, dan tiga kelompok Tikus hiperglikemik diberi ekstrak buah okra dengan dosis 0,375 ml/100 gBB tikus, 0,75 ml/100 gBB tikus, dan 1,5 ml/100 gBB tikus. Data diperoleh dari pemeriksaan kadar glukosa darah pada semua kelompok tikus Wistar pada hari ke nol, pertama, dan kedua pada menit ke-0, 30, 60, 90, 120 dan jam ke-0, 6, 12, 18, dan 24. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemberian ekstrak buah okra dengan dosis 0,375 ml/100 gBB tikus, 0,75 ml/100 gBB tikus, dan 1,5 ml/100 gBB tikus tidak mempunyai efek menurunkan kadar glukosa darah tikus Wistar. Abstract Background The antidiabetic and hypoglycemic effects of chitosan have been reported in previous studies. We have previously shown that chitosan oligosaccharide reduces postprandial blood glucose levels in vivo. We conducted a short-term crossover study to support the results of the previous study. Methods The study was a randomized, double-blind, controlled crossover trial completed at one clinical research site. Subjects with impaired glucose tolerance and impaired fasting glucose and healthy subjects were randomly assigned to consume one of two different experimental test capsules that differed in only the sample source (GO2KA1 vs placebo), and all subjects were instructed to consume the 75 g sucrose within 15 min. After a 7-day interval, the subjects consumed the other capsules that were not consumed on the first day. We assessed blood glucose levels using a 2-h oral sucrose tolerance test. The study was registered at clinicaltrials.gov (NCT03650023). Results The test group showed significantly lower blood glucose levels at 60 min (p = 0.010) and postprandial blood glucose areas under the curve (p = 0.012). The change in blood glucose levels at 60 min was significantly lower in the test group than in the placebo group (p = 0.017). Conclusions Based on the results of this study, the consumption of chitosan oligosaccharide (GO2KA1) supplements with a meal can effectively reduce postprandial blood glucose levels, which is relevant to the prevention of diabetes.
