AbstractDagong 打工 as a way of life gives rise to many abuses and rights violations against China's 200 million migrant workers. This article analyses the intricate issues of rights deprivation, rights consciousness and personal strategies of Chinese migrant workers with the research findings from a large sample survey completed at the end of 2005. The data confirm the occurrence of many types of rights abuses, significant levels of rights consciousness, and preference for legal and institutionalized means for rights defence besides the use of private resources. Furthermore, the findings reveal that the experience of discrimination, consciousness of rights and choice of personal strategies are affected by personal backgrounds like age, gender, education and occupational status before migration, which carry implications for policy. Finally, the article comments on the ongoing debate about “rights consciousness” versus “rules consciousness” in contentious Chinese politics.

The travel simulation models for many metropolitan areas were originally developed and calibrated with older large-sample travel surveys that can no longer be undertaken given today’s funding constraints. Small-sample travel surveys have been collected as part of model update activities required by the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act and the Clean Air Act Amendments. Although providing useful information, these surveys are inadequate for calibrating elaborate simulation models by traditional techniques. Parameter transfer scaling based on small-sample surveys and other secondary source data can be a cost-effective alternative to large-sample surveys when existing models are being updated, particularly when the models tend to be robust and the required changes are relatively small. The use of parameter scaling methods to update the Delaware Valley Planning Commission’s existing travel simulation models is demonstrated. All available sources of data are incorporated into the update process including current survey data, census work trips from the Census Transportation Planning Package (CTPP), transit ridership checks, highway screenline counts, and Highway Performance Monitoring System travel estimates. A synopsis of experience with parameter scaling techniques including the model changes and resulting accuracy is provided. Overall, small-sample-based parameter scaling techniques were judged to be effective. The census CTPP data were evaluated versus the home interview and were found to be useful in the model recalibration effort as a source of small-area employment data by place of work and as a supplement to home interview data for model validation. However, a home interview survey is required as the primary source of travel data for both work and nonwork trips.

The Covid-19 pandemic is one of the most disruptive, life-changing events that had brought the world to a perpetual standstill in 2020. Schools and institutions of higher education were impacted badly, resulting from the lockdowns and movement restrictions imposed by the governments of numerous countries. Students and faculty found themselves in virtual classrooms, with many caught unaware of what they needed to do, having to learn new things at lightning speed and feeling a sense of despair. While many online learners had frustrations and concerns regarding their online learning experience, there were those who had a good learning experience. The students’ observations and perceptions of the difficulties and opportunities they encountered in their online learning experience were assessed through grounded theory using textual thematic qualitative analysis of their reflective feedback. The findings reveal that most students had a good online learning experience and found that the academic continuity plans implemented by the universities were effective. The concerns that some students had with online learning were related to technological drawbacks such as poor internet connections, and personal concerns about academic ability and time management skills, among others. This study concludes by offering insights and recommendations to institutions, faculty, and students on how best to conduct online learning and teaching for all.

Abstract — In the book Basic Concepts and Educational Supervision Techniques citing information from the Dictionary of Education Good Carter explains the notion of supervision, namely the efforts of school officials in leading teachers and other officials in improving teaching, including stimulating, selecting growth in positions and the development of teachers and revising educational goals, teaching materials and teaching methods and evaluations. Educational supervision has important objectives and benefits including the following: Generating and encouraging the enthusiasm of teachers and other school administration staff to carry out their duties properly. So that teachers and other administrative staff try to complete their shortcomings in the administration of education, including in the various instructional media needed for the smooth running of a good learning and teaching process. Together try to develop, find and use new methods for the advancement of a good learning and teaching process. Fostering harmonious cooperation between teachers, students and school staff. For example, by holding seminars, workshops, in-service, and training.

The University of Surrey Library and Learning Support Services (LLSS) recognised an increasing need to transform its welcome, induction and orientation activities for students. Past activities have entailed delivering information to students in ways which may have led to information overload and lack of engagement by students with library services. The LLSS have been exploring innovative ways to welcome students to university, moving away from didactic approaches. This paper presents one such innovation produced among a series of activities during 2017/18, an educational escape room, informed by the work of Walsh (2017). This activity invited students to solve a series of themed puzzles in the escape room, introducing them to library services and information literacy (IL) skills to support their studies. This report provides an account of the challenges and positive outcomes encountered in designing the escape room, with a view to sharing good learning and teaching practice.

Background: Burnout is considered a global problem, particularly in the emergency health sector; however, no large-sample cross-sectional study has assessed the prevalence of burnout among emergency physicians and its associated factors.Methods: A nationally representative cross-sectional survey of 15,243 emergency physicians was conducted in 31 provinces across China between July and September 2019. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to identify correlates of burnout.Results: The participants' mean scores were 25.8 (SD = 15.9) on the emotional exhaustion (EE) subscale, 8.1 (SD = 7.9) on the depersonalization (DP) subscale, and 26.80 (SD = 12.5) on the personal accomplishment (PA) subscale, indicating a pattern of moderate EE, moderate DP, and high PA. The results of the large-sample survey found that 14.9% of emergency physicians had a high level of burnout in China, with 46.8% scoring high for EE, 24.1% scoring high for DP, and 60.5% having a high risk of low PA. Having poor self-perceived health status and sleep quality, working in developed regions and governmental hospitals, having an intermediate professional title, experiencing depression, performing shift work and experiencing workplace violence made emergency physicians more likely to experience occupational burnout.Conclusion: Positive measures should be taken to reduce the burnout of emergency physicians and improve their work enthusiasm to maintain the quality of emergency medical services.
