Radio astronomy has been expanding into outer space so fast in recent years that it is pleasant to find our own solar system at last receiving the attention it deserves. In this session we are concerned with everything within the system except the sun and our own planet. I start with a question, to which I shall return later: Where does the sun end? In another session you will hear of the experiments on the far-out parts of the solar corona; here we are concerned with interplanetary space as well as with the planets themselves, and what lies within this region may or may not be considered part of the solar corona.

I feel very honoured at having been asked by the IAU Executive to present Prof. Sagdeev’s invited discourse on Venus in his absence. As has already been mentioned Prof. Sagdeev was summoned to the talks between the USSR and the USA in Geneva as an expert in Space Research. He went there with several very important proposals for future cooperation in scientific exploration of outer space and we all hope that the results of his mission will be beneficial for the development of space astronomy and therefore for the whole astronomical community represented by the International Astronomical Union. I am sure that all present in this room realize that it is not an easy task to present someone else’s lecture especially at such short notice and in a foreign language. Besides, it is my opinion that a talk on Venus – the brightest celestial body in the sky except the moon and the Sun – Venus which always has been the symbol of beauty, love and femininity, that such a talk should surely be given by a man.

This biocritical study of J. G. Ballard is the first book to account for the entire life and work of the eccentric, prolific SF author. Ballard began his career publishing short stories in SF magazines. Rather than explore outer space, his fiction explores “inner space,” drawing on the aesthetics of Surrealism and Freudian psychoanalysis. In the 1960s, he became associated with the New Wave movement in SF, which eschewed the principles of pulp SF in favor of literary modernism. Ballard’s oeuvre maps the unfolding of the mediapocalypse from the dawn of the Space Age into the 21st century; pathologized by the technology of electronic media, his characters are chronically harrowed by an implosion of real and cinematic landscapes as they struggle to find agency from the “death of affect” incited by the forces of late capitalism. Some scholarship has tried to remove Ballard from SF, arguing that he abandoned the genre halfway through his career, especially after publishing the fictional autobiography Empire of the Sun. As this book avows, however, Ballard began as, and always remained, a SF writer.

Abstract. Throughout the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics's (IUGG's) centennial anniversary, the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy is holding a series of activities to underline the ground-breaking facts in the area of geomagnetism and aeronomy. Over 100 years, the history of these research fields is rich, and here we present a short tour through some of the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy's (IAGA's) major achievements. Starting with the scientific landscape before IAGA, through its foundation until the present, we review the research and achievements considering its complexity and variability, from geodynamo up to the Sun and outer space. While a number of the achievements were accomplished with direct IAGA involvement, the others represent the most important benchmarks of geomagnetism and aeronomy studies. In summary, IAGA is an important and active association with a long and rich history and prospective future.

Geophysics is the physics of the Earth. It encompasses areas such as seismology, plate tectonics, gravity, and the Earth’s magnetic field, all of which give clues to both the structure and the working of the Earth. Geophysics: A Very Short Introduction describes the internal and external processes that affect the planet, as well as the techniques used by geophysicists to investigate them. If you look at a rendering of planet Earth from a bird's eye view, you will see satellites orbiting the planet like electrons, each one a testament to humanity's expansion beyond Earth's atmosphere. It begs the question: what is this new humanized landscape? The dominant voice that has attempted to answer this question is the realist one, which has led the charge of academic inquiry into outer space since the fateful launch of the Sputnik in 1957. Though enlightening in some respects, the realist perspective oftentimes obscures the heterogeneous complexity of the actors, actions, limits and possibilities that have constructed this very humanized outer space. This paper looks at the humanization of outer space through the lens of JASON-3, an internationally collaborative satellite designed primarily to measure the topography of the Earth's oceans. A vast number of actors collaborated to enact the network that created JASON-3, including bureaucratic agencies, academics, private contractors, political bodies, other satellites, the sun and even gravity. This paper will focus on these actors and the work that they did to form the network, showing a glimpse of the entangled connections that eventually produced JASON-3. Through telling this story, I argue: (1) outer space is more complex than state-level relations and (2) critical geography -- with its insight into relational spaces and deconstructing power structures -- has a unique place to fill in outer space literature.

Astrology is a divine, ancient and very ancient art. This astrological art is based on the movements of the sun, moon and all kinds of planets, and is an advanced phenomenon based on the properties of the stars in outer space. In ancient times kings were well versed in medicine and astrology. Astrologers and physicians were regularly featured in the royal court. Star, Thithi etc. were also seen for surgical treatment. In this, the astrologers were the ones who handled the medicine very well. Based on this, they predicted the harm to the country, knew the disease coming through it and treated the medical system accordingly. This study, entitled ‘Diabetes in Medical Astrology’, provides a comprehensive overview of the patients being treated for diabetes in hospitals and the medications available and the purpose of this study is to find out the horoscopes of the planets that cause their diseases by getting their horoscopes, and how astrology and the structure of the planets can help them to know who will be affected by diabetes in the future and how to protect themselves from it.
