- The aim of this essay is the ‘triangular theory of social interactions as expounded by Kenneth Boulding. Rediscovering the theoretical reflections of Kenneth Boulding about social interactions is even more important nowadays when economists are emphasizing the role of both formal and informal institutions in economic development and growth. In fact, he pioneered the study of elements which are commonly considered in the economic theories of institutions, social capital, reciprocity and relational goods.

Regardless of any approach taken for examining social capital, researchers continuously converge on some key issues such as trust and yet diverge on several others about concrete and consistent indicators for measuring social capital. Many researchers believe that presence or absences of social capital can be solely linked to trusting relationships people build with each other as well as social institutions of civil engagement. It is not clearly known however, whether trust itself is a precondition for generating social capital or whether there are other intermediary variables that can influence the role of trust in creating social capital. In addition, similar to social capital, the definition of trust is problematic and it remains a nebulous concept and equally, with many dimensions. Interests in the analysis of trust are wide spread among many disciplines, notably policy analysis, economic development, reliability and security of distributed computational systems and many others. The variety of approaches currently employed to investigate trust and different interpretations of its role in fostering social capital has resulted into a diverse array of knowledge about the concept and its relationship to social capital. This Chapter provides a broader overview of work on trust. It discusses how researchers have used trust as a proxy for measuring social capital.

Various kinds of developments in various fields provide many innovations, one of which is in agriculture. The hydroponic method emerged as a new innovation in farming by utilizing soil substitute water media. Hydroponics, which are more suitable to be applied in areas with narrow land, are utilized by the villagers of Kalirejo Malang to improve the economy of the villagers. Through social capital established in the Kalirejo village community and cooperation with PT Otsuka, regional economic development is created through hydroponics. This study aims to determine how the forms of social capital that exist in the Kalirejo village community in improving the regional economy through hydroponics. The research was conducted using descriptive qualitative methods with data collection through observation and interviews. The results obtained are that there is a significant role of social capital in the management of hydroponics among residents of Kalirejo Village Malang and its relationship in improving the regional economy.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of university identification to explain students’ involvement in extra-role behaviours and turnover intentions. The theoretical model developed, specifies the relationships between university identity and identification and between identification and behavioural patterns. Design/methodology/approach Data have been collected from a sample of 338 students from an Italian University. Then, they have been analysed adopting linear regression models (multiple when occurs) and a path analysis through structural equations models has been developed. The Sobel test has been used in the analysis to verify the mediator role of variables. Findings The results show that: the university identity perception of students have significant effect on university identification process; and student-university identification have significant effect on student’s advocacy, that is negatively related to turnover intention. Originality/value This paper provides support for the importance of brand management in higher educational context. Institutions would benefit from communicating their identities clearly, coherently and in a persuasive manner, emphasising those aspects of the university’s identity that students and future students will perceive as prestigious and similar to their identities.

This paper examines the influence on product innovation of factors based on a company’s transformation and exploitation of knowledge gathered from its intra-organizational relationships. Specifically, this paper analyses the influence of intra-organizational social capital (SC) (i.e., comprised of structural, relational, and cognitive dimensions) on realized absorptive capacity (RACAP). Moreover, it analyses the mediating role of RACAP on the relationship between internal SC and product innovation. Based on a sample of companies from the Spanish biotechnological and pharmaceutical industries, two hypotheses were tested using a structural equations model and the partial least squares (PLS) technique. The results support both hypotheses, suggesting that the development of strong and tightly knit links based on a common understanding and trust among company members lead the firm to develop dynamic capabilities for transforming and exploiting knowledge acquired externally, which fosters innovation based on new product development. Research limitations, implications and future research are also discussed by the authors of the paper.

The study aims to examine the influence of intellectual capital to social performance of Islamic banks. The study assumes there is an intervening role of financial performance on the relation between intellectual capital and social performance of Islamic banks. The VAIC (valued added intellectual capital) is used to measure the intellectual capital. While social capital of Islamic banks comprises four main aspects which are contribution economic development, society, stakeholders, and human development & research. The financial performance is represented by ROA and ROE. The study finds that intellectual capital of Islamic banks has an increasing performance during the period of the study where human capital is the main backbone. Otherwise, social performances of Islamic banks are relatively fluctuated and tend to remain stable during the period. The statistical test shows that intellectual capital has no significant impact on social performance of Islamic banks. However intellectual capital positively and significantly influences financial performance of Islamic banks.
