AbstractThis article presents a Mamluk Qurʾān ǧuzʾ copied in Cairo in the late 14th century, newly acquired by the Musée du Louvre. It is an interesting example of manuscript production in this period and well contextualized thanks to its informative colophon. It can be linked with other volumes of the same Qurʾān now in Cairo and Brussels. This manuscript was acquired together with some documents (two letters, a note and a watercolour) revealing information about its circulation in the 19th century and connecting it with the amīr ʿAbd al-Qādir al-Ǧazāʾirī and the French orientalist Léon Roches.

This article examines three drawings of the head of St Swithun made in the late 13th and early 14th century. The drawings were devised and put into registers of documents created in the royal exchequer at Westminster, where they functioned as finding-aids. As such, they are unusual examples of religious imagery with no religious purpose, and throw some light on prevailing ideas about Winchester cathedral priory at the time they were made. Their appearance was possibly conditioned by their maker's acquaintance with head-shaped reliquaries: this matter is briefly discussed, and a hitherto unremarked head-relic of St Swithun at Westminster Abbey introduced.

The article focuses on the attribution of one gold and two copper coins discovered by the Russian Archaeological Mission of the Institute of Oriental Studies RAS in the ancient Egyptian necropolis of Giza. Coins come from mixed fillings of the burial shafts of the Ancient Egyptian rock-cut tombs of the second half of the 3rd millennium B.C. According to the archaeological context, the coins belong to the stages of the destruction of ancient burials that took place during the Middle Ages and Modern times. One of the coins is a Mamluk fals dating back to the first half of the 14th century A.D., the other two belong to the 1830s — the Ottoman period in Egypt, and are attributed as gold a buchuk hayriye and its copper imitation. Coins are rare for the ancient necropolis and are mainly limited to specimens of the 19th–20th centuries. In general, taking into account the numerous finds of other objects — fragments of ceramic, porcelain and glass utensils, metal ware, glass and copper decorations, we can talk about the dynamic nature of human activity in the ancient Egyptian cemetery in the 2nd millennium A.D. Egyptians and European travelers used the ancient rock-cut tombs as permanent habitats or temporary sites, leaving material traces of their stay.

Geology of Greenland Survey Bulletin, 189, 65-69. https://doi.org/10.34194/ggub.v189.5159 _______________ During the Middle Ages the Norse settlements in Greenland were the most northerly outpost of European Christianity and civilisation in the Northern Hemisphere. The climate was relatively stable and mild around A.D. 985 when Eric the Red founded the Eastern Settlement in the fjords of South Greenland. The Norse lived in Greenland for almost 500 years, but disappeared in the 14th century. Letters in Iceland report on a Norse marriage in A.D. 1408 in Hvalsey church of the Eastern Settlement, but after this account all written sources remain silent. Although there have been numerous studies and much speculation, the fate of the Norse settlements in Greenland remains an essentially unsolved question.

Those of us who work with medieval illustrated manuscripts are often guilty of ignoring the major contributions by medieval Jewish scribes and illuminators or the manuscripts produced for Jewish consumers. To remedy this situation, Milivia Bollati, Flora Cassen, and Marc Michael Epstein here present the most impressive Lombard Haggadah, both by examining its background, purpose, design, and by providing a complete facsimile of the manuscript. Famous Christopher de Hamel (Cambridge) adds a pleasant introduction in which he emphasizes the considerable degree of overlap of Christian and Jewish manuscript production. The Lombard Haggadah is the earliest stand-alone Haggadah and is one of only three illustrated medieval Haggadot still privately owned (Sandra Hindman, 8). This manuscript was on public display in New York in April 2019, and was for sale. <?page nr="510"?>It is not clear to me whether any buyer acquired it.

ABSTRACT The paper presents and discusses a series of radiocarbon (14C) dates from a medieval Nubian monastery found on Kom H of Old Dongola, the capital of the kingdom of Makuria located in modern-day Sudan. The monastery was founded in the 6th–7th century AD and although it probably ceased to function in the 14th century, the site remained occupied until the beginning of the 15th century. The investigated courtyard of the monastery was in use from the 11th to the 14th century, as indicated by the ceramics and 14C analysis results presented here. The dates under consideration are the first published series of 14C dates from this site, which is of crucial importance for historical research on medieval Nubian Christianity and monasticism. They permit to begin building an absolute chronological framework for research on the archaeological finds from the site and region. A group of finds in particular need of such a framework are ceramics, and the implications of the 14C dates for pottery assemblages found in the dated contexts are discussed. The conclusions summarize the significance of the datings for the history of the site.

AbstractThe current article primarily aims at analysing the strategies utilised by quintessential translators of F. Villon to render into Spanish the figures of diction and thought that characterise the poetry of the 14th-century author, following the classical classification proposed by Abrams (1953). A second objective is to suggest a set of guidelines on how to translate the figurative use of discourse into a given target-language text. Accordingly, this article will first provide an overview on the most relevant approaches to poetry translation, which especially concern relaying the figurative language of a source into a target-language text. Moreover, it will analyse a set of examples that best illustrate the distinctive use of rhetorical devices by Villon, and will examine the ways to better transforming them into another target language, namely Spanish. Lately, this article will propose a set of translation guidelines for both the figures of diction and thought that permeate his poetry.
